  • To investigate organoclay, high styrene resin masterbatch (HSR), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), and polystyrene (PS) as reinforcing materials for the improvement of the abrasion resistance of poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS), SBS/organoclay nanocomposites, SBS/HSR, SBS/HIPS, and SBS/PS blends were prepared. The effect of organoclay and blends on the abrasion resistance and mechanical properties of SBS was investigated. Even though intercalations of organoclay are observed for SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites and not for SBS/Cloisite 30B composites, the abrasion resistance of SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites is worse than that of SBS/Cloisite 30B composites. When SBS was blended with HSR, HIPS and PS, the abrasion resistance of the blends increases with increasing of HSR, HIPS and PS content from 0 to 20 wt%.

  • In the present work, low density polyethylene (LDPE)/aliphatic polyester (APES)/organoclay ternary nanocomposites were prepared. In particular, the effect of a compatibilizer, polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH), on the morphology and properties of the ternary nanocomposites was investigated. LDPE/APES/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared through melt intercalation method using two different kinds of organoclay. The dispersibility of silicate clays in the nanocomposites was investigated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The ternary nanocomposites showed higher tensile properties than the LDPE/APES blend did. The dispersibility and properties of nanocomposites containing Cloisite 30B were better than those of the nanocomposites containing Cloisite 20A. Unlike Cloisite 20A, hydroxyl groups in the intercalants in Cloisite 30B interlayer underwent a certain polar interaction with the carboxyl group of APES, favoring the intercalation of APES chains and the formation of LDPE/APES/Closite 30B nanocomposites. However, the introduction of the polar hydroxyl groups also enhanced the interaction with the silicate surface at the same time, thereby rendering somewhat difficult the replacement of the surface contacts by LDPE chains, and impeding the extensive intercalation and further exfoliation of Cloisite 30B in the LDPE/APES matrix. The compatibilizer enhanced the intercalation of the polymer chain inside the clay gallery and thus improved the mechanical properties of the ternary nanocomposites. Rheological measurements of the nanocomposites via frequency sweep experiment indicated a certain interaction between the clay platelet and the polymer molecules in the melted state.

  • Nanocomposites of a epoxy resin are synthesized and evaluated. the present study investigated the effect of nanoclay additives on the properties of diglycidyl ether or bisphenol A(DGEBA) epoxy resin. DGEBA was mixed with 3$\sim$7 wt% organically modified layered silicate, Cloisite 30B for three hours. The average grain size of the specimens decreased with adding Cloisite 30B. The dielectric constant showed between 3.2$\sim$3.5 and the dielectric loss showed between 3.2$\sim$5.7 % in all specimens. Dielectric strength showed a best valu of 20.8 kV/mm at added with Cloisite 30B 5 wt%.

  • Soy protein isolate (SPI)-based nanocomposite films with three different types of nanoclays, such as Cloisite $Na^+$, Cloisite 20A, and Cloisite 30B, were prepared using a solution casting method, and their optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties were determined to investigate the effect of nano-clay type on film properties. Among the tested nanoclays, Cloisite $Na^+$, a hydrophilic montmorillonite (MMT), exhibited the highest transparency with least opaqueness, the highest tensile strength, and the highest water vapor barrier properties, indicating Cloisite $Na^+$ is the most compatible with SPI polymer matrix to form nanocomposite films. The film properties of SPI/Cloisite $Na^+$ nanocomposite films were strongly dependent on the concentration of the clay. Film properties such as optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties improved significantly (p<0.05) as the concentration of clay increased. However, the effectiveness of addition of the clay reduced above a certain level (i.e., 5wt%), indicating that there is an optimum amount of clay addition to exploit the full advantage of nanocmposite films.

  • Nanohybrid based on environmentally friendly and biodegradable polymer, poly propylene carbonate (PPC) and cloisite 20B (PPC/C-20B) have been synthesized by solution blending method and their morphology, thermal and water absorption properties have been evaluated. The structure of PPC/C-20B nanohybrid was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal property of PPC and PPC/C-20B nanohybrid were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC). The experimental results demonstrated that nanohybrid showed the highest thermal stability in TGA and DSC. TGA tests revealed that the thermal decomposition temperature ($T_{d50%}$) of the nanohybrid increased significantly, being $23^{\circ}C$ higher than that of pure PPC while DSC measurements indicated that the introduction of 5 mass% of clay increased the glass transition temperature from 21 to $30^{\circ}C$. Further the water absorption capacity of the PPC was significantly decreased by the incorporation of clay. Water absorption cause degradation of the coating by the moistures and affect the physical and mechanical performance. This result indicates that organic modifiers have effect on thermal and water absorption capacity of PPC and are of importance for the practical process and application of PPC.
