  • Commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes traditionally rely on the computational efficiency of the simplified single-film apparent char kinetic model to predict char particle temperatures and char conversion rates in pulverized coal boilers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability of the single-film apparent kinetic model and to suggest the importance of proper use of this model. For this, a parametric study was conducted with a consideration of main parameters such as Stefan flow, product species, particle evolution, and kinetic parameters.

  • The experimental work has been carried out for the study of pyrolysis and char-air reaction of five coals used in Y power station in Korea. For five coals, the characteristics of pyrolyis and char reaction have been investigated with TGA, and their kinetic parameters were obtained and compared each other. The order of pyrolysis rate for five coals were as follows : Peabody, Flame, MIP, Indominco, Elk valley. The behavior of char - air reaction for five coal chars have been successfully described by the grain model. The rate of char-air reaction gave the maximum value for Flame coal char, on the while Elk valley coal char had the minimum value. For the reaction temperature over 1,000K, Flame coal char - air reaction was very fast compared with other coal chars.

  • The char oxidation characteristics of ashless coal with a relatively low ash content and high heating value were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$), in various oxygen concentrations (from 10% to 30%) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace. The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO, $CO_2$) measured by FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured by the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor of ashless coal char were also calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that higher temperature and oxygen concentration result in a higher reaction rate of ashless coal, and the activation energy of ashless coal char is similar to that of bituminous coal.

  • Many computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations have treated the coal kinetics poorly due to large physical domain sizes and high computational complexity, particularly for the recent oxy-coal boilers. Furthermore, some modelers' lack of understanding of the kinetic rate model seems to worsen the simulation accuracy. This study is to suggest the importance of proper use of single-film global kinetic model generally used in CFD code to describe the oxy-fuel combustion of coal char through simple char burnout calculation.

  • Effects of temperature, volatile content, particle diameter and solid input weight were investigated in the batch fluidized bed reactor using OCN703-1100 particle as oxygen carrier and Roto coal and char as fuels. Two solid fuels represented the best reactivity at different temperature, $900^{\circ}C$ for Roto coal and $950^{\circ}C$ for char, respectively. However, we selected $900^{\circ}C$ as the best operating temperature because the improvement of reactivity of char at $950^{\circ}C$ was negligible. Char represented better reactivity than Roto coal because char contains low volatile than Roto coal. For both solid fuels, reactivities were improved with increasing of the particle diameter. These results were explained by solid mixing tests in a transparent fluidized bed using two char particles having different particle size ranges and OCN703-1100 particle. The bigger particle showed better solid mixing with OCN703-1100 particle, and therefore, represented better reactivity. For both solid fuels, reactivities were improved with increasing of the solid input weight within the experimental conditions of this study because the weight of coarse particles increased with the solid input weight increased, and therefore, these coarse particles can mix well with the oxygen carrier.

  • The char oxidation characteristics of high ash coal were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from 900 to $1300^{\circ}C$) for 4 types of coals (Gunvor, Glencore, Noble, and ECM) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace (DTF). The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO and $CO_2$) using FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured using the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for high ash coal char were calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that as the ash content increases, the particle temperature and area reactivity decreases. This is because in high ash coal, the large heat capacity of the ash, ash vaporization, and relatively low fixed carbon content of ash suppress combustibility during char oxidation. As a result, the higher ash content of coal leads to high activation energy.

  • A technique for determination of proportions of char, coal ana coke is needed in order to monitor pulverized coal injection performance in operating blast furnace. Quantitative X-ray powder diffraction analysis can be applied to the problem providing that structural information on carbonaceous materials, coal, char, coke and their mixture are known. Chars were prepared from a coal at different temperatures (1000∼1400$^{\circ}C$) and were characterised by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). The XRD result gave crystallite size (height Lc and diameter, La), aromaticity, number of (002) plane in carbon, and d-spacing. As a result, with increasing heat treat temperature of char, Lc$_{(002)}$, La$_{(10)}$ and number of (002) plane in carbon were increased, and d-spacing and FWHM(Full With Half Maximum) were decreased. Result of prediction of amount of char from the mixtures (char, coke and ore) based on the Lc$_{(002)}$ information of two mixtures (coke and char) showed very close values expected.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of the temperature on the coal/biomass $char-CO_2$ gasification reaction under isothermal conditions of $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ using the lignite(Indonesia Eco coal) with biomass (korea cypress). Ni catalysts were impregnated on the coal by the ion-exchange method. Four kinetic models which are shrinking core model (SCM), volumetric reaction model (VRM), random pore model (RPM) and modified volumetric reaction model (MVRM) for gas-solid reaction were applied to the experimental data against the measured kinetic data. The Activation energy of Ni-coal/biomass, non-catalyst coal/biomass $Char-CO_2$ gasification was calculated from the Arrhenius equation.

  • In this study, pre-processor code based on structural behavior of coal is applied to predict yields, pyrolysis rate and compositions of volatile and char. These parameters are used in the devolatilization and char burnout sub-models as user-defined functions of commercial CFD code. The predicted characteristics of these sub-models are compared with those employing the conventional model based on experiment and validated against the measurement of a 2.1 MW swirling pulverized coal flame in a semi-industrial scale furnace. And the influence of the turbulence-chemistry interaction on pulverized coal combustion is analyzed.

  • Reactivity of gasification defined by bouardard reaction is critical parameter in efficiency of the gasifier. In this study, char reactivity of the gasification was derived from the experiments using the intrinsic reaction kinetics model. Pressurized wire mesh heating reactor (PWMR) can produce high temperature and high pressure conditions up to 50 atm and 1750 K, respectively and PWMR was designed to evaluate the intrinsic reaction kinetics of $CO_2$ gasification. In this study, Kideco and KCH (sub-bituminous Indonesian coal) were pulverized and converted into char. Experiments used the PWMR were conducted and the conditions of the temperature and pressure were 1373~1673 K, 1~40 atm. To distinguish the pressure effect from high pressurized condition, internal and external effectiveness factors were considered. Finally, the intrinsic kinetics of the Kideco and KCH coal char were derived from $n^{th}$ order reaction rate equations.
