Reaction Characteristics of Water Gas Shift Catalysts in Various Operation Conditions of Blue Hydrogen Production Using Petroleum Cokes (석유코크스 활용 블루수소생산을 위한 Water Gas Shift 촉매의 조업조건에 따른 반응특성)

  • To confirm the applicability of the water gas shift reaction for the production of high purity hydrogen for petroleum cokes, an unutilized low grade resource, Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 (CZMA), catalyst was prepared using the co-precipitation method. The prepared catalyst was analyzed using BET and H2-TPR. Catalyst reactivity tests were compared and analyzed in two cases: a single LTS reaction from syngas containing a high concentration of CO, and an LTS reaction immediately after the syngas passed through a HTS reaction without condensation of steam. Reaction characteristics in accordance with steam/CO ratio, flow rate, and temperature were confirmed under both conditions. When the converted low concentration of CO and steam were immediately injected into the LTS, the CO conversion was rather low in most conditions despite the presence of large amounts of steam. In addition, because the influence of the steam/CO ratio, temperature, and flow rate was significant, additional analysis was required to determine the optimal operating conditions. Meanwhile, carbon deposition or activity degradation of the catalyst did not appear under high CO concentration, and high CO conversion was exhibited in most cases. In conclusion, it was confirmed that when the Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst and the appropriate operating conditions were applied to the syngas composition containing a high concentration of CO, the high concentration of CO could be converted in sufficient amounts into CO2 by applying a single LTS reaction.

  • 주석함유 2차 공정 부산물인 양극 슬라임내의 금속을 회수하기 위하여 탄소환원반응을 통해 금속 회수에 미치는 공정변수의 영향을 조사하였다. 열역학 모델링과 금속환원 실험결과, 환원 온도와 고체 환원제인 코크스(cokes)에 공정 변수에 따라 금속으로 환원이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • In order to develop the high refractory composite materials consisting of mullite and carborundum, Hadong kaolin and coal coke were selected as the starting materials. Silicone carbide crystals formed during the high-temperature reaction between kaolin and coke were detected by X-ray diffraction method and identified by electron diffraction. The temperature at which the amorphous silicone carbide begins to crystallize could be assumed to be about 155$0^{\circ}C$, which is the lower temperature claimed by others.

Hydration of Modified Converter Slag (개질한 전노슬래그의 수화반응)

  • A converter slag has been heat-treated above melting point at reduced condition by cokes. As the result, most iron was separated. To make hydraulic compounds, calcium oxide was added to the reduced converter slag and the mixtures were sintered. This modified converter slag clinker mainly contained tricalcium silicate and calcium aluminates, and have a great potential to be a good hydraulic cement. The hydrates of the hydraulic compounds and gypsum with and without granulated slags, were mainly C-S-H, ettringite, calcium monosulfoaluminate hydrate, calcium aluminate hydrate, and $Ca(OH)_2$

  • Modifying surface of activated carbon for the electrode of EDLC with an organic electrolyte was investigated to improve the electrochemical performance of EDLC by the microwave radiation. Three kinds of activated carbons, prepared activated carbon from petroleum cokes and pitch cokes and commercial activated carbon BP-25, were used for this study. For all investigated activated carbons, hydrophilic functional groups-containing oxygen disappeared from the surface of activated carbon as microwave radiation. And as microwave radiation time was increased, the specific surface area and total pore volume of activated carbons were reduced and average pore diameter were increased. From theses effects, interfacial resistance of EDLC with the modified activated carbon electrode was drastically decreased, and discharge capacitance was increased although the specific surface area of activated carbon was reduced by this microwave radiation.

  • China's "Foreign Trade law" 16.4 revised in 2004 like "Foreign Trade law" 16.2 in 1994 is still stipulated resource restriction to protect domestic resources and it does not satisfy the introduction of article 20 and section (g) of GATT 1994. Through an interpretation of related regulations and China-EU cokes dispute, the paper points out that China's "Foreign Trade law" 16.4 has no validity of the introduction of article 20 and section (g) of GATT 1994. Comparing China's "Foreign Trade law" 16.4 to GATT 1994 20(g), China's "Foreign Trade law" 16.4 does not include important conditions of GATT 1994 20 introduction such as not being arbitrary or unjustifiable discrimination and disguised restriction on international trade. For example, based upon China's "Foreign Trade law" , if she restricts or prohibits important natural resources that Korea mainly relies on China, it will effects not only trade between two countries but also our lives and securities. Hence, it is highly time to analyze China's the Validity of the China's Resource Export-Quota Restrictive Measures under the GATT/WTO. In the process of resolving China-EU cokes dispute in 2004, ministry of Commerce of China shows well its characteristics of dispute settlement and also we can find out EU's logical countermeasures. Therefore, because of the high possibility of disputes between Korea and China in the area of natural resources, Korea needs to pay attention to the China's resource protecting policies, and if it violates GATT 1994 20 introduction and (g), we should consider to sue China to WTO. The paper believes that it will play an important role as an aggressive demand and effect on amendment of China's "Foreign Trade law" in the long term.

Effect of β-Resin of Petroleum-based Binder Pitch on Density of Carbon Block (석유계 바인더 피치의 β-resin이 탄소블럭의 밀도에 미치는 영향)

  • Carbon blocks were prepared by compression molding process using the mixture of isotropic cokes and binder pitches, which were reformed with different ${\beta}$-resin contents from pyrolysis fuel oil. Physical and chemical properties and also thermal behavior of binder pitches were investigated through elemental analysis, FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The adhesion of binder pitches to isotropic coke particles was evaluated from SEM images of the fracture surface of carbon blocks. From these results, it is shown that the adhesion between the cokes and binder was enhanced by increasing the ${\beta}$-resin content of binder pitches. The density of the carbon block after carbonization also increased from 1.325 to $1.383g/cm^3$ by increasing the ${\beta}$-resin content of binder pitches from 1.4 to 20.1%.

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions is an important issue in the steel industry, and the research on carbon materials that can partially replace cokes is necessary to reduce CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, the biomass fuel contains some fixed carbon, and the carbon content in the biomass can be increased by torrefaction. As one of the biomass fuels, coffee grounds contains about 55 mass% of carbon, and its about 270,000 tons are landfilled and incinerated annually in Korea. In addition, research on the recycling process due to the increase in annual coffee consumption is required. In this study, the effect of temperature on the concentration of fixed carbon in coffee grounds was investigated during torrefaction. Moreover, the effects of mixing ratio of torrefied coffee grounds with cokes on the carbon concentration and dissolution efficiency in the metal sample were investigated.

  • As a new type of flame, tubular flame has attracted much attention from a fundamental viewpoint and many experimental and theoretical studies have been made on its characteristics. Recently, it is also recognized that the tubular flame has great potentials as practical combustor because its stability range is very wide in fuel concentration and also in injection velocity. Thus, tubular flame burners have been developed for various kinds of fuels. They are gaseous fuels of methane, propane, hydrogen, and by-product fuels gases in steel making processes including BFG (Blast Furnace Gas), LDG (LD Converter Gas), and COG (Cokes-Oven Gas), liquid fuels of kerosene, A-type and C-type heavy oils, and a solid fuel of biomass powder. In this paper, recent developments of the tubular flame burners have been briefly introduced.
