  • This paper proposes a sense amplifier with non-volatile memory in order to improve the image quality of LCD by enhancing the matching of the driving voltages between the panel and driver. The sense amplifier having a wide sensing margin and fast response adjusts LCD driver voltage of display driver. The CSTN-LCD with the sense amplifier results improved image quality than that with conventional 6 bit column driver without it.

  • Steering system is typically one of the vehicle parts that may injure an unrestrained driver in a frontal collision. Therefore, the engineers of vehicle safety parts researched the allowable injury criteria such as HIC(head injury criterion). chest acceleration and knee impact force. From their research, they recognized that development of energy absorbing steering system was necessary to protect the driver. Energy absorbing parts of steering system consist of shear capsule, ball sleeve and shaft assembly. We performed the modelling and dynamic analysis of the energy absorbing steering column with the unrestrained driver model. The conclusions of this study are as follows. 1) The variation of column angle has an important effects on the dynamic responses of steering system and driver behavior. 2) The energy absorbing steering system satisfies the safety criterion of FMVSS 203, 208, but not the safety criterion of FMVSS 204.

  • Steering column is a typical component that may injure the driver at a frontal collision accident. To protect the driver from an impact, it is very important to study the impact absorbing behaviour of steering column. The dynamic simulation were performed for the ball sleeve type impact absorbing steering column. The simulation results show similar trends to FMVSS 203 test results. Hence using the simulation program developed in this study, it is possible to predict dynamic response of steering system which is used in design modification. Impact absorbing performance of the ball sleeve type steering column with the column angle of $21^\circC$ and $26^\circC$ satisfies the safety criterion of FMVSS 203.

  • During crash of a vehicle, most of the kinetic energy of the driver is absorbed by the steering system. The deformation characteristics of the steering system has significant effects on the injury of the driver. A part of the energy is absorbed by the steering wheel and another part by the collapsable steering column. It is believed that strength distribution between the wheel and the column has an important effect on the injury of the driver. A design criterion is suggested for steering wheels for maximum protection of drivers. Tagushi method is used to analyse the effects of design parameters.

  • This paper has proposed a serial 8-bit DAC for column driver circuits of mobile displays using LTPS TFTs. The DAC circuit takes very small area by using parasitic capacitance of column lines as sampling and holding capacitors. Moreover, the proposed DAC does not need the analog buffer, because the DAC operation is performed on the column lines. For the data driver circuits of 2-inch qVGA OLED panel, the DAC area is $84um{\times}800um$ and the simulated DAC power consumption is 8.5mW with 10-V supply voltage.

  • This study proposes and validates a new column type electric power steering system (EPS-TT). It is driven by a uni-directional motor and two electro-magnetic clutches. The assist motor produces assist torque in only one direction and two clutches transmit the torque to the column of steering system in either left or right direction with respect to the steering input. A full order and a reduced order models are developed to evaluate the EPS-TT. Models are also used to investigate the vehicle responses. A PID control logic is designed to control the torque of the assist motor. A driver model is applied to the system and the resulting performances are analyzed. The results show that the performances of the full order model are similar to those of reduced order model. The results also prove that the performances achieved by the EPS-TT are improved compared to those of a conventional EPS-TT across the frequency domain.

  • CMOS LCD driving circuits using poly-Si TFT have been designed and basic blocks including test patterns have been fabricated. Column driver drives the pixels by block because polu-Si TFT can not operate at the speed of video signal. Row driver has mode selection circuit which can select a mode between interlacing mode and non-interlacing mode. Experimental results show shift register can operate at 1MHz colck frequency with 4pF load.

  • A $1"{\times}l"$, $512{\times}512$ poly-Si TFT-LCD with a new integrated 8-bit parallel-serial digital data driver was proposed and designed. For high resolution, the proposed parallel-serial digital driver used serial video data rather than parallel ones. Thus, digital circuits for driving one column line could be integrated within very small width. The parallel-serial digital data driver comprised of shift registers, latches, and serial digital-to-analog converters (DAC's). We designed a $1"{\times}l"$, $512{\times}512$ poly-Si TFT-LCD with integrated 8-bit parallel-serial digital data drivers by a circuit simulator which has physical-based analytical model of poly-Si TFT's. The fabricated shift register well operated at 2 MHz and $V_{DD}$=10V and the fabricated poly-Si TFT serial DAC's, which converts serial digital data to an analog signal, could convert one bit within $2.8{\mu}s$. The driver circuits for one data line occupied $8100{\times}50{\mu}m^2$ with $4{\mu}m$ design rule.

  • This work proposes a 1280-RGB $\times$ 800-Dot 70.78mW 0.l3um CMOS LCD driver IC (LDI) for high-performance 16M-color low temperature poly silicon (LTPS) thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) systems such as ultra mobile PC (UMPC) and mobile applications simultaneously requiring high resolution, low power, and small size at high speed. The proposed LDI optimizes power consumption and chip area at high resolution based on a resistor-string based architecture. The single column driver employing a 1:12 MUX architecture drives 12 channels simultaneously to minimize chip area. The implemented class-AB amplifier achieves a rail-to-rail operation with high gain and low power while minimizing the effect of offset and output deviations for high definition. The supply- and temperature-insensitive current reference is implemented on chip with a small number of MOS transistors. A slew enhancement technique applicable to next-generation source drivers, not implemented on this prototype chip, is proposed to reduce power consumption further. The prototype LDI implemented in a 0.13um CMOS technology demonstrates a measured settling time of source driver amplifiers within 1.016us and 1.072us during high-to-low and low-to-high transitions, respectively. The output voltage of source drivers shows a maximum deviation of 11mV. The LDI with an active die area of $12,203um{\times}1500um$ consumes 70.78mW at 1.5V/5.5V.

  • A 15.4" WXGA TFT-LCD, featuring integrated a-Si:H gate driver circuits and reduced data driver ICs, has been developed. To reduce number of data lines into 1/2 of conventional structure, the pixel array has been re-mapped with re-organized data signal. Unintended artificial effects such as flicker were removed by adopting the novel pixel array having a 'zigzag' map. To minimize the power consumption, a column inversion method was incorporated in the zigzag pixel array (Fig.1) without modifying the polarity map of conventional dot inversion method.
