The size-dependent behavior of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) embedded in the elastic medium and subjected to the initial axial force is investigated using the mixed finite element method. The SWCNT is assumed to be Euler-Bernoulli beam incorporating nonlocal theory developed by Eringen. The mixed finite element model shows its great advantage of dealing with nonlocal behavior of SWCNT subjected to a concentrated load owing to the existence of two coefficients ${\alpha}_1$ and ${\alpha}_2$. This is the first numerical approach to deal with a puzzling fact of nonlocal theory with concentrated load. Numerical examples are performed to show the accuracy and efficiency of the present method. In addition, parametric study is carefully carried out to point out the influences of nonlocal effect, the elastic medium, and the initial axial force on the behavior of the carbon nanotubes.
In this study, the seismic performance of RC school buildings which were not designed according to earthquake-resistance design code were evaluated by using response spectrum and push-over analyses. The torsional amplification effect due to plan irregularity is considered and then the efficiency of seismic retrofitting methods such as RC shear wall, steel frame, RC frame and PC wing wall was investigated. The analysis result indicate that the inter-story drift concentrated in the first floor and most plastic hinge forms at the column of the first story. Among the retrofitting methods, the PC wing wall has the highest seismic performance in strength and story drift aspect. Especially, it can make building ductile behavior due to the concentrated inter-story drift at the first column hinge is distributed overall stories. The axial force, shear force and moment magnitude of existing elements significantly decreased after retrofitting. However, the axial and shear force of the elements connected to the additional retrofitting elements increased, and especially the boundary columns at the end of the retrofitting shear wall should be reinforced for assuring the enhancement of seismic performance.
Functionally graded material (FGM) illustrates a novel class of composites that consists of a graded pattern of material composition. FGM is engineered to have a continuously varying spatial composition profile. Current work focused on buckling analysis of beam made of stepwise linear and quadratic graded material in axial direction subjected to axial span-load with piecewise function and rested on shear layer based on classical beam theory. The various boundary and natural conditions including simply supported (S-S), pinned - clamped (P-C), axial hinge - pinned (AH-P), axial hinge - clamped (AH-C), pinned - shear hinge (P-SHH), pinned - shear force released (P-SHR), axial hinge - shear force released (AH-SHR) and axial hinge - shear hinge (AH-SHH) are considered. To the best of the author's knowledge, buckling behavior of this kind of Euler-Bernoulli beams has not been studied yet. The equilibrium differential equation is derived by minimizing total potential energy via variational calculus and solved analytically. The boundary conditions, natural conditions and deformation continuity at concentrated load insertion point are expressed in matrix form and nontrivial solution is employed to calculate first buckling loads and corresponding mode shapes. By increasing truncation order, the relative error reduction and convergence of solution are observed. Fast convergence and good compatibility with various conditions are advantages of the proposed method. A MATLAB code is provided in appendix to employ the numerical procedure based on proposed method.

The dynamic stability of spinning beam with free boundary conditions for both edges subjected to a tip follower force $P_0+P_1cos{\Omega}t$ is analyzed. It is studied that the beam has a concentrated mass. and then the effects of the axial locations of the mass are studied. The beam is modelled with the Timoshenko type shear deformations. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion, and the critical spinning speed of a beam subjected to a follower force with various non-dimensional parameters is investigated. The finite elements are used with $C^0$ continuity to analyze the spinning beam model, and the method of multiple scales is tried to investigate the dynamic instability regions. The governing equations of motion involve periodic coefficients, which are not in the form of standard Mathieu-Hill equations. The result shows that the concentrated mass increases the dynamic stability of the spinning free-free beam subjected to a thrust.

The compression toe of structural wall is designed to resist the axial compression and shear force caused by wind or earthquake. The performance of shear wall used in tall building is highly influenced by combined shear and axial force. For this reason, it is possible to result in local brittle failure because of concentrated damage in the potential plastic hinge region under severe earthquake. Thus, it is necessary to establish the lateral confinement details at the plastic hinge of shear wall so that shear wall can behave a ductile manner, The objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of L-shaped walls with different confinement details. For this purpose, three wall specimens were tested experimentally and also analyzed using Nonlinear FEM package.
The force transfer mechanism in positive moment continuity details for prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated in this paper using a three-dimensional detailed finite element model. Positive moment reinforcement in the form of hairpin bars as recommended by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report No 519 is incorporated in the model. The cold construction joint that develops at the interface between girder ends and continuity diaphragms is also simulated via contact elements. The model is then subjected to the positive moment and corresponding shear forces that would develop over the service life of the bridge. The stress distribution in the continuity diaphragm and the axial force distribution in the hairpin bars are presented. It was found that due to the asymmetric configuration of the hairpin bars, asymmetric stress distribution develops at the continuity diaphragm, which can be exacerbated by other asymmetric factors such as skewed bridge configurations. It was also observed that when the joint is subjected to a positive moment, the tensile force is transferred from the girder end to the continuity diaphragm only through the hairpin bars due to the lack of contact between the both members at the construction joint. As a result, the stress distribution at girder ends was found to be concentrated around the hairpin bars influence area, rather than be resisted by the entire girder composite section. Finally, the results are used to develop an approach for estimating the cracking moment capacity at girder ends based on a proposed effective moment of inertia.
The effects of weight and axial inertia of a beam are taken into account for studying the nonlinear vibration of the Timoshenko beam due to external loads. The combination of Galerkins method and Runge-Kutta method are employed to obtain the dynamic responses of the beam. A concentrated force and a two-axle vehicle traversing on the beam are taken as two examples to investigate the response characteristics of the beam. Results show that the effect of axial inertia of the beam increases the fundamental period of the beam. Further, both the dynamic deflection and the dynamic moment of the beam obtained with including the effect of axial inertia of the beam are greater than those of the beam without including that effect of the beam.

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of insertion torque of bone quality and to compare axial force, moment and von Mises stress using finite element analysis of plastoelastic property for bone stress and strain by dividing bone quality to its thickness of cortical bone, density of trabecular bone and existence of lower cortical bone when implant inserted to mandibular premolar region. The $Br{\aa}nemark$ MKIII. RP implant and cylindrical bone finite model were designed as cortical bone at upper border and trabecular bone below the cortical bone. 7 models were made according to thickness of cortical bone, density of trabecular bone and bicortical anchorage and von Mises stress, axial force and moment were compared by running time. Dividing the insertion time, it seemed 300msec that inferior border of implant flange impinged the upper border of bone, 550msec that implant flange placed in middle of upper border and 800msec that superior border of implant flange was at the same level as bone surface. The maximum axial force peak was at about 500msec, and maximum moment peak was at about 800msec. The correlation of von Mises stress distribution was seen at both peak level. The following findings were appeared by the study which compared the axial force by its each area. The axial force was measured highest when $Br{\aa}nemark$ MKIII implant flange inserts the cortical bone. And maximal moment was measured highest after axial force suddenly decreased when the flange impinged at upper border and the concentration of von Mises stress distribution was at the same site. When implant was placed, the axial force and moment was measured high as the cortical bone got thicker and the force concentrated at the cortical bone site. The influence of density in trabecular bone to axial force was less when cortical bone was 1.5 mm thick but it might be more affected when the thickness was 0.5 mm. The total axial force with bicortical anchorage, was similar when upper border thickness was the same. But at the lower border the axial force of bicortical model was higher than that of monocortical model. Within the limitation of this FEA study, the insertion torque was most affected by the thickness of cortical bone when it was placed the $Br{\aa}nemark$ MKIII implant in premolar region of mandible.

In general, RC beam members are designed as flexural members, considering only the bending load. However, in actual buildings, axial and bending load are simultaneously applied due to the continuity between members. As a result, the bending strength of the RC beam member increases, but the displacement decreases, and cracks are mainly concentrated in the center of the beam. Therefore, in this study, the bending performance of both normal and strengthened RC beam using carbon fiber sheets subjected to combined axial and bending load was experimentally evaluated. The carbon fiber sheets were wrapped around the middle of the specimens, and axial and bending load were applied simultaneously to the beams. The magnitude of the axial force and the effects of carbon fiber sheet reinforcement on the deformed shape, bending strength, deflection, and ductility of the RC beams were analyzed. The results show that as the applied axial force increased, the maximum bending strength increased, but the ductility decreased 64%. The bending strength of the strengthened beams increased up to 27%, the maximum deflection decreased around 8% and the ductility increased by up to 43%.
In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel distortion. Experimental data recently given in the literature referring to the load-deflection response of external RC joints with smooth rebars are utilized to validate the model, showing good agreement. Finally, the proposed model can be considered a useful instrument for preliminary static verification of existing external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars for both strength and ductility verification.
