  • The roots of Pseudarthria viscida (L.) Wight and Arnott. (Leguminosae) are used against various disorders in Indian systems of medicine, namely as anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, aphrodisiac, rejuvenating, tonic and as a remedy for cough, asthma, tuberculosis, diarrhoea and alternate fever. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the root sample using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. he physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of P. viscida root and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

  • SET (Suppressor of variegation, Enhancer of zeste, and the Trithorax) domain-containing proteins are known to have methyltransferase activity at lysine residues of histone proteins. In this study, we identified a novel SET domain-containing protein from mouse and named Kodo7. Indeed, Kodo7 has methyltransferase activity at K9 residue of the H3 protein as demonstrated by a histone methyl-transferse activity assay using GST-tagged Kodo7. Confocal microscopy showed that Kodo7 is co-localized with histones in the nucleus. Interestingly, ectopic expression of Kodo7 by transient transfection induced cell death and treatment of the transfectants with a caspase-3 inhibitor, Ac-DEVD-AFC decreased Kodo7-induced apoptosis. These results suggest that Kodo7 induces apoptotic cell death through increased methylation of histones leading to transcriptional repression.

  • Potassium (K) distribution in rice (Oryza sativa L.) root was studied by confocal laser microscopy, using potassium sensitive fluorescent dye potassium-binding benzofuran isophthalate (PBFI). Significantly high intensity of K-specific fluorescence was detected at the root cap region followed by meristematic and basal regions. A negligible or fainted fluorescence was observed at the root hairs area. These results suggest that K is heavily distributed in the apical area of rice root, which may be required in higher concentration for division and extension of cells, as it is the rapidly growing region of the root, moreover, may also be involved in water uptake by creating osmotic gradient across membranes.

  • In light microscopy, spatial resolution is limited by diffraction effect. Confocal microscopy has improved resolutions in both lateral and axial directions, but these are still limited by diffraction effect. Confocal self-interference microscopy (CSIM) uses interference between two perpendicularly polarized beams to enhance lateral resolution. In previous research, we proposed a calcite plate with its optic-axis perpendicular to the propagation angle and one of the boundary surfaces of the plate. This type of plate is not widely used to our knowledge. In this paper, we change the calcite plate to more common one, which is commercially available. This calcite plate has its optic axis in the plane of incidence. We analyze the characteristics of this calcite plate and numerically compare the performances of CSIM in previous research and CSIM with the commercial calcite plate. Numerical results show improved performance when using the commercial calcite plate

  • In the present study, polyester-melamine coating systems with natural wood fiber (NWF) were prepared and the effects of NWF on the corrosion protectiveness of the polyester-melamine coating were examined using EIS analysis. From the results, higher average surface roughness was observed with increase of NWF content. Water diffusivity and water uptake into the polyester-melamine coatings with NWF were much higher than that into the pure polyester-melamine coating. The decrease in the impedance modulus |Z| was associated with the localized corrosion on carbon steel, confirming that corrosion protection of the polyester-melamine coatings with NWF well agrees with its water transport behavior.

  • Isolated single pancreatic acinar cells have long been used as a good model for studying many kinds of signaling processes due to their good structural and functional polarities without a significant validation. In this study, we have examined morphological and functional changes of the dissociated single pancreatic acinar cells by imaging cytosolic Ca$\^$2+/ concentration, exocytosis of granules, and by observing their shapes with confocal microscopy.

  • LCD panels are used widely in all sorts of devices. Since glass is the main material used to make the panels, scratch resistance is an important issue in acquiring high quality LCD panels. In this work the wear behaviors of three types of commercially available LCD panel glasses were investigated. A pin-on-reciprocating tribotester was used to perform the wear tests using the glass specimens against a stainless steel ball. The hardness of the specimens was initially obtained. It was shown that the wear amount varied with respect to the applied load as well as the type of glass. The wear pattern of the glass specimen was also characterized using confocal microscopy. It is expected that the results of this work will aid in improving the tribological properties of LCD panel glass.

  • This paper presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the stem and root of the crude drug Ipomoea quamoclit Linn. (Convolvulaceae). Morphoanatomy of the stem and root have been studied with the aim to aid pharmacognostic and taxonomic species identification using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of stem and root of I. quamoclit and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

  • The increased application of the da Vinci robotic platform (Intuitive Surgical Inc.) for microsurgery has led to the development of new adjunctive surgical instrumentation. In microsurgery, the robotic platform can provide high definition $12{\times}-15{\times}$ digital magnification, broader range of motion, fine instrument handling with decreased tremor, reduced surgeon fatigue, and improved surgical productivity. This paper presents novel adjunctive tools that provide enhanced optical magnification, micro-Doppler sensing of vessels down to a 1-mm size, vein mapping capabilities, hydro-dissection, micro-ablation technology (with minimal thermal spread-$CO_2$ laser technology), and confocal microscopy to provide imaging at a cellular level. Microsurgical outcomes from the use of these tools in the management of patients with infertility and chronic groin and testicular pain are reviewed. All these instruments have been adapted for the robotic console and enhance the robot-assisted microsurgery experience. As the popularity of robot-assisted microsurgery grows, so will its breadth of instrumentation.
