  • This study is to explain understanding types about the concept of a 'Region' in the 3rd grade high school students(39) through open-ended questionnaires and describe the pedagogical utilizations for this. Students' understanding types about the concept of a 'Region' are compared and then determined through two meaning agreement and association between meaning of students' understanding which is collected through open-ended questionnaires and meaning of a 'Region' which is described in high school curriculum. The results are as in the following. First, Students' understanding types about the concept of a 'Region' were divided into four categories: full, partial, ambiguous, and converted understanding. Second, The degree of right meaning agreement and association existing between two meanings is rising steadily by converted, ambiguous, partial, and full understanding. For this reason, This result can make sure the understanding degree about the concept of a 'Region' is different depending on the students. Third, Students' partial understanding, ambiguous understanding and converted understanding on region concept could be judged as misconception not fully corresponded to region concept in the curriculum explanation. Fourth, Teachers can achieve conceptual change through this misconception as a subject matter of educational dialogue for meaning change.

  • Objectives : Patients with neck tumor and their family need every information about the disease. Especially, the size and location are confusing with verbal information. With the aid of CT, the problem had some answer, but it needs some medical education. We would like to know the usefullness of 3D reconstructed images in patient education about the disease. Material and Methods : Neck CT data were collected from 10 patients with various neck tumors and converted to 3D reconstructed images. Understanding of the patients about the size and location of tumors were rated from questionaires using axial CT images and 3D images. Results : Understanding score about 3D images were greater than that of CT images(p<0.006). Conclusion : 3D reconstructed images of CT could give the patients more real visual information about the disease.

  • Nominalization is one of the grammatical metaphors that makes it easier to mathematize the target that needs to be converted into a formula, but it has the disadvantage of making problem understanding difficult due to complex and compressed sentence structures. To investigate how this nominalization affects students' problem-solving processes, an analysis was conducted on 233 third-grade elementary school students' problem solving of eight arithmetic word problems with or without nominalization. The analysis showed that the presence or absence of nominalization did not have a significant impact on their problem understanding and their ability to convert sentences to formulas. Although the students did not have any prior experience in nominalization, they restructured the sentences by using nominalization or agnation in the problem understanding stage. When the types of nominalization change, the rate of setting the formula correctly appeared high. Through this, the use of nominalization can be a pedagogical strategy for solving word problems and can be expected to help facilitate deeper understanding.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate students' understanding of the terms presented on the information board in the Jinan-Muju National Geopark. To this end, a survey was conducted with 219 students (147 elementary, 41 middle, and 31 high school students) to determine the level of their perceptions of the geopark, and of the usefulness of the information board, and their understanding of the terms presented on the information boards of the National Geopark. To determine the students' understanding of terms, 10 representative information boards were selected and the entire content was converted into text. Afterwards, 256 key terms were extracted from the text through discussions with three experts, and these terms were presented to students to grasp their level of understanding. The results were as follows: First, the level of students' perceptions about the geopark was very low, so publicity and educational approaches are needed. Second, students were not interested in the information board and had a low level of understanding owing to the large amount of information and reading difficulties. Third, among the 256 terms, the number of terms that students found difficult to understand tended to decrease with increasing school grade: 80 for elementary school students, 53 for middle school students, and 31 for high school students. The reason the students had difficulty in understanding terms was that elementary school students had not yet learned the terms in the curriculum, whereas middle and high school students have difficulty understanding technical terms and Chinese characters. Therefore, the information board in the geopark will need to be easily translated into Chinese characters or additional explanations of technical terms need to be provided so that visitors can understand the concepts more easily.

  • Fraction is one of the concepts which are difficult to elementary school students. So, many researches about fraction were performed in mathematics education research. In special, fraction has so many subordinative concepts-proper fraction, improper fraction, mixed number. We have to concentrate on the conceptual understanding in teaching of fraction. In this case, a mixed number and improper fraction are concepts which can convert respectively. And there are methods that a mixed number and improper fraction can be converted. So, it's needed to analyze the converting methods in textbooks for getting the implication of teaching in this areas. In this study, I analyzed the Korean and foreign's textbooks. I certified the methods-using addition expression, using part-whole model in the textbooks. For the conceptual understanding, I suggested to use the fusion of the various part-whole fraction models and addition expression more than the algorithm in converting between a mixed number and improper fraction. It's reason that the use of models in converting between a mixed number and improper fraction is important for the relational understanding.

  • The interaction between adsorbed water and hydrogen on metallic surfaces is important for fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis and electrode surface reactions in acidic environment. Here, we explore a long-standing question of whether hydronium ion can exist or not on a Pt surface coadsorbed with atomic hydrogen and water. Studies based on mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy show clear evidence that hydrogen atoms are converted into hydrated protons on a Pt(111) surface. The preferential structures of hydrated protons are identified as multiply hydrated $H_5O_2{^+}$ and $H_7O_3{^+}$ species rather than as hydronium ions. The multiply hydrated protons may be regarded as two dimensional zundel ($H_5O_2{^+}$) and Eigen cation ($H_7O_3{^+}$) in water-metal interface. These surface-bound hydrated protons may be key surface intermediates of the electrochemical interconversion between adsorbed hydrogen atoms and solvated protons.

  • Modeling and analysis of dynamic systems generally demand their resutls to be interpreted each other with a physical sense. It sometimes requires that there should exist a unified tool in the treatment of dynamic systems which can be applied to both their modeling and analysis equally. This paper shows how models just after the progress of modeling via bond graph standards are converted to ones which are appropriate for analyzing a dynamic system in the frequency domain. Four bond graph prototypes are introduced to obtain frequency properties of dynamic systems such as zero stability, relative order, zero and pole dynamics, etc. directly from bond graphs, and the method are proposed which reduces nearly all models of bond graph standards to one of the prototypes without any change of physical similarity. This procedure as a tool for the structural reduction of bond graphs and finding frequency properties of a dynamic system is further investigated to survey its effectiveness through an example.

  • The ability to pass between bars is one of the most important performance of self-compacting concrete or high-flowability concrete since it determines the final filling capacity which influences the strength and durability of hardened concrete in structure. Therefore it has been evaluated by many researchers using different kinds of testing apparatuses. The assessments of passing ability, however, differ largely according to the style, the dimension and the criteria in apparatuses, and the value obtained from one apparatus cannot be converted those of the others. There needs a rheological approach to the better understanding of the passing behavior of fresh concrete between reinforcing bars, where the flow velocity of concrete becomes slow and the blockade sometimes occurs due to the interference between aggregates and reinforcing bars. Experimental works were conducted to clarity the effects of the clearance between reinforcing bars, the volume of aggregate and the rheological properties of matrix on the behavior from the rheological point view and showed the rational mix proportioning of concrete.

  • Biofuels produced from biomass can be substituted for petroleum fuels due to GHG reduction, sustainability and environmental friendly. The process technologies that convert biomass into biofuels are varied and depend on the feedstocks. Microalgae are considered to be one of the most promising alternative source to the conventional feedstocks for biofuel. Microalgae can be converted to biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas and biojet fuel via thermolchemical and biochemical production technologies. This reviews discusses recent advance in understanding the effects of the characteristics of various processes on the production of biofuels using microalgae. The performances of microalgae based biofuel are compared.
