An understanding of dielectric breakdown characteristics in cryogenic liquids is of importance in the development of various cryogenic and superconducting electrical equipments. This investigation describes measurements of pulse breakdown voltage, polarity effect, conditioning effect and time lag characteristics of cryogenic liquids.
Partial discharge measurements in cryogenic dielectric materials of HTS transformer are very important because partial discharge was regarded as primary source for ageing and breakdown of cryogenic materials. But, partial discharge measurement techniques and its effects in low temperature high voltage environments were not suggested and there exist only a few reports on this research fields. Therefore, in order to implement reliable HTS transformers, partial discharge diagnosis techniques for cryogenic materials of HTS transformers were investigated using partial discharge (PD) pattern analysis methods. In this works, four different types of artificial defects including turn to turn insulation, free moving particle, void and protrusion, have been fabricated since it was commonly regarded that they might cause the sudden service failures of the power apparatus. For this purpose, these defects are installed into the dielectric materials in liquid nitrogen and experimental investigations have been carried out for the diagnosis of HTS transformer. And various PD patterns caused by the amount of quench of superconductors were analyzed. Throughout this works, the different PD patterns in cryogenic dielectric materials in liquid nitrogen, and PD measuring technique could be the fundamental steps to establish diagnosis technologies of HTS transformer for power applications.

Measuring an exact amount of remaining cryogenic liquid propellant under microgravity condition is one of the important issues of rocket vehicle. A Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) gauging method is attractive due to its minimal additional hardware and simple gauging process. In this paper, PVT gauging method using liquid nitrogen is investigated under microgravity condition with parabolic flight. A 9.2 litre metal cryogenic liquid storage tank containing approximately 30% of liquid nitrogen is pressurized by ambient temperature helium gas. During microgravity condition, the inside of the liquid tank becomes near-isothermal condition within 1 K difference indicated by 6 silicon diode sensors vertically distributed in the middle of the liquid tank. Helium injection with higher mass flow rate after 10 seconds of the waiting time results in successful measurements of helium partial pressure in the tank. Average liquid volume measurement error is within 11% of the whole liquid tank volume and standard deviation of errors is 11.9. As a result, the applicability of PVT gauging method to liquid propellant stored in space is proven with good measurement accuracy.
Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a sensitive detector of magnetic flux signals. Up to now, the main application of SQUIDs has been measurements of magnetic flux signals in the frequency range from near DC to several MHz. Recently, cryogenic low-noise radio-frequency (RF) amplifiers based on DC SQUID are under development aiming to detect RF signals with sensitivity approaching quantum limit. In this paper, we review the recent progress of cryogenic low-noise RF amplifiers based on SQUID technology.

Polymer composites were used to reduce the weight of the spacecraft's cryogenic propellant tank. Since these materials were directional, the permeability performance of the gas permeated or delivered in the stacking direction was an indicator directly related to performance such as tank stability and onboard fuel quantity estimation. In addition, the results of permeation measurements and optical analysis of the surface to verify the effect of the number of cycles exposed to the cryogenic-room temperature environment are included. As a result, the permeability was inversely proportional to the thickness and was proportional to the number of thermal shocks, and it was verified that the permeability performance was suitable for the cryogenic propellant tank material for the space launch vehicle.
The characteristics of evaporation heat transfer for the utilization of LNG cold energy was investigated experimentally using liquified nitrogen and a solution of ethylene-glycol and water under horizontal two-phase conditions in the small-scale equipment of a cryogenic heat exchange system. The inner tubes in the double pipe heat exchanger with 8 mm and 15 mm inner diameter and 6 m length were adopted as a smooth test tubes and enhanced tubes by means of wire-coil inserts. Heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt number for the test tube were calculated from measurements of temperatures, flowrates and pressures. The correlations in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, the Reynolds number and Prandtl number for heat transfer were proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlations showed heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for the smooth tubes, increased by more than 2.5 ${\~}$ 5.5 times depending upon the equivalent Reynolds number. Form and length of cryogenic double pipe heat exchanger were proposed for applicable to the utilization of LNG cold energy.
Torque tubes in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) motor transfer torque from superconducting field winding rotor to the room temperature shaft. It should have minimum heat conduction property for minimizing the load on cryo-refrigerator. Generally, these torque tubes are made with stainless steel material because of high strength, very low outgassing and low thermal contraction properties at cryogenic temperatures and vacuum conditions. With recent developments in composite materials, these torque tubes could be made of composites such as Kevlar and S-Glass, which have the required properties like high strength and low thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperatures, but with a reduced weight. Development and testing of torque tubes made of these composites for HTS motor are taken up at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Hyderabad in collaboration with Central Institute of Plastics and Engineering Technology (CIPET), Chennai and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. As these materials are subjected to vacuum, it is important to measure their outgassing rates under vacuum conditions before manufacturing prototype torque tubes. The present study focusses on the outgassing characteristics of Kevlar and S-Glass, using an Outgassing Measurement System (OMS), developed at IIT Kharagpur. The OMS facility works under vacuum environment, in which the test samples are exposed to vacuum conditions over a sufficient period of time. The outgassing measurements for the composite samples were obtained using pressure-rise technique. These studies are useful to quantify the outgassing rate of composite materials under vacuum conditions and to suggest them for manufacturing composite torque tubes used in HTS motors.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement and the pressure drop characteristics for liquid nitrogen using wire-coil-insert technique under horizontal two-phase conditions. The tube inner diameters were 8 mm and 15 mm, respectively and the tube length was 4.7 m. The helix angle of the wire coil insert was $50^{\circ}$ and its length was 4.7 m. Heat transfer coefficients for both the plain and the enhanced test tubes were calculated from the measurements of temperatures, flow rates and pressure drops. A correlation in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, Reynolds number and Prandtl number for the heat transfer was proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlation showed that heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for plain tubes, increased by more than $1.8{\sim}2.0$ times depending upon the range of the equivalent Reynolds number. The correlation was compared with other various correlations in the turbulent flow conditions.
Sub-Kelvin cooling has been generally demanded for the fields of low temperature physics, such as physical property measurements, astronomical detection, and quantum computing. The refrigeration system with a small size can be appropriately introduced when the measurement system does not require a high cooling capacity at sub-Kelvin temperature. The dilution refrigerator which is a common method to reach sub-Kelvin, however, must possess a large 3He circulation equipment at room temperature. As alternatives, a sorption refrigerator and a magnetic refrigerator can be adopted for sub-Kelvin cooling. This paper describes those coolers which have been developed by various research groups. Furthermore, a cold-cycle dilution refrigerator of which the size of the 3He circulation system is minimized, is also introduced. Subsequently, a new concept of dilution refrigerator is proposed by our group. The suggested cooler can achieve sub-Kelvin temperature with a small size since it does not require any recuperator and turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Its architecture allows the compact configuration to reach sub-Kelvin temperature by integrating the sorption pump and the magnetic refrigerators. Therefore, it may be suitably utilized in the low temperature experiments requiring low cooling capacity.
Properties of SrTiO$_3$ thin films were characterized under the influence of an applied dc voltage utilizing a gold resonator with a flip-chip capacitor. The measurements were performed at microwave frequency ranges and low temperatures cryogenic temperatures. The dielectric constant of 830 and the low loss tangent of 6X10$^{-3}$ at 3.64 GHz were observed at 90 K and 100 V. The quality in the SrTiO$_3$ film was presented in terms of fractional frequency under the bias voltages and cryogenic temperatures.
