  • In order to reduce the accidents occurring at construction sites, it is necessary to approach with harmonious measures considering various aspects such as systems, training, facilities, and protection equipments. Suggestion of safe construction method can be a good alternative. In the previous study, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel was proposed as an alternative method for safe bridge deck construction, and the performance required by the design code was verified through a four-point bending test. But the actual bridge deck is subjected to the repetitive action of the wheel load rather than the bending condition due to the four-point load. In this study, fatigue test was performed by repeating the wheel load $2{\times}10^6$ cycles to verify the safety of the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel under actual conditions. As a result, fatigue effect due to repetition of wheel load was not significant in terms of serviceability such as crack width and deflection. In the residual strength test conducted after the fatigue test, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel failed by punching shear which is typical failure mode of bridge decks and the residual strength was similar to the punching strength of the RC and PSC bridge decks in spite of the fatigue effects.

  • The precast pannels are used as formwork in Half-depth precast deck systems. Therefore, it has many advantages, including safe and convenient construction and reduced construction period compared to cast-in-place construction method. In half-depth precast deck systems, the bonding of precast pannels to cast-in place concrete is very important. To enhance the performance of half-depth precast deck system, it is necessary to improve the composite efficiency of the interface or increase the stiffness of the precast pannel to reduce deformation or stress on the interface. In this study, a flexural test of half-depth precast deck system was performed, in which the shear connecting reinforcement was applied to increase the bonding performance at the interface, and the rib shape precast panels were applied to improve stiffness. In addition, the safety and serviceability of these systems were evaluated. Test results show that all of specimens have the required flexural strength under the ultimate strength limit design. It was also evaluated to have sufficient safety for the serviceability of deflection and crack under the serviceability limit design.

  • The application of High Performance Concrete (HPC) for protecting bridge deck concrete with micro-silica, fly-ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag was introduced to North America in the early 1980's. This report introduces the literature reviews of high performance concrete for protecting concrete bridge deck and explains 2-different types of construction methods using this materials. One is high performance concrete overlay method and the other is full depth bridge deck method. Both methods have been successfully applied and demonstrated in north america. Especially, modified high performance concrete overlay method including silica-fume and PVA fiber has been successfully applied in korea also. Therefore, both methods that high performance concrete overlay and full depth bridge deck are considered as reasonable bridge deck protecting methods compared with the conventional bridge deck system using asphalt modified materials.

  • Minimizing the girder number and appling the long span deck of plate girder bridge is the main factors in the practical and economic design of the Twin Steel Girder Bridge. Therefore, it is important to verify the ability of the long span concrete deck. In this paper, to improve the problem, the precast concrete full depth deck has been used instead of cast-in-place concrete deck. The precast concrete full depth deck having longitudinal and transverse prestress is efficient to design of the long span concrete slabs. This paper introduces the design concept of Twin Steel Bridge using the precast concrete full depth deck and applied design case.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. In this paper, three types of the detail for joints was selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack contral was investigated through static tests on composite beams. Form the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of half-depth precast deck was observed and especially an overlapping length of loop joint and transverse reinforcement were checked. The results suggest that increasing the loop overlapping length increases the flexural strength of half-depth precast deck with loop joints. In terms of crack contral, the loop joint with transverse reinforcement showed better performance.

  • Precast members have relatively good quality because they are manufactured in an environment suitable for quality control. A typical precast method in which pre-fabricated segments are assembled in the field requires a joint. Although the joint is a small part of the member, it greatly affects the behavior and quality of the structural member. In the previous study of this paper, the flexural strength of a joint, which is generally applied to half-depth precast deck systems, was verified to have higher strength than the design requirement. In addition, the proposed joint has been verified to have higher strength by reinforcing the connecting rebar. However, even if the flexural strength of the joints is sufficient, excessive deflection or lack of fatigue performance is likely to cause cracks in the half-depth precast deck system. In this study, the serviceability of the half-deck precast panel specimens with joints was evaluated and the experimental verification was conducted to evaluate the fatigue performance of the joint without connection rebar. As a result, the serviceability such as deflection and crack width was found to be higher than the design requirement in all the specimens. In the fatigue test, the fatigue effect was insignificant even in the absence of connection rebar.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flexural and shear capacity of steel wire-integrated void deck plate slabs. In order to evaluate flexural and shear capacity, we make five 150mmspecimens and three 200mmspecimens by slab depth as main variable. Each series of specimen is comprised of an existing steel wire-integrated deck-plate slab and two specimens using topping depth as variable. From the series of experiments, steel wire-integrated void deck plate slabs has any decline in flexural and shear performance. Therefore, a void-deck-plate slab which inserts Omega-steel plate showed reducing a using concrete-volume and had flexural and shear capacity following existing steel wire-integrated deck-plate.

  • Generally, the girder spacing of the two-girder composite bridge is from 5m up to 15m. To ensure the structural safety according to Korean Bridge Design Specification, the deck depth should be from 33 cm upto 73 cm. Using the transversal prestressing strands in concrete deck, we can reduce its depth about 10%. However, there is little experience on the design and construction of prestressed concrete(PSC) decks in Korea. This paper focuses on the behaviors of PSC deck. A literature survey is performed widely. Considering the characteristics of the two-girder bridge and the construction conditions in Korea, a cast-in-place PSC deck is recommended for the two-girder bridge with 6m girder spacing. To examine its structural behaviors and safety, three partial model deck specimens(3 m$\times$5 m) with real scale are fabricated md tested. One(PS34-RS) is 34cm depth with the stiffness restraint in longitudinal edges for simulating the real bridge deck. Another(PS34-NS) is same depth without the stiffness restraint, and the other(PS28-NS) is 28cm depth with the stiffness restraint. Under the static patch loading, each specimen had a larger ultimate flexural strength than the design value. Specimens with the stiffness restraint (PS34-RS and PS28-RS) showed the punching shear failure mode and specimen without that(PS34-NS) showed the flexural failure mode.

  • The two-girder composite bridge has the girder space of more than 5m, for special case, over than 15m. Therefor, the design and construction of this bridge system require new approaches. To ensure the structural safety, the deck depth should be increased. Therefore, the economically designed deck system is necessary for th two-girder bridge. This study is the first step to develop the deck system for two-girder bridges. In this study, a literatute survey is performed to develop a new deck system for two-girder type of bridges. By considering the characteristics of two-girder bridge system, a cast-in-place PSC deck is proposed for the two-girder bridges. To examine structural behavior and safety of the proposed PSC deck, three real scale partition deck(3m$\times$5m) are tested under the static loading. In the test, the failure mode and behavior of each specimen, and ultimate load carrying capacity of the two-girder-bridge deck are identified.
