  • For discriminating between water and oil, a novel method is proposed in this paper. As a fundamental result, the temperature dependence of ultrasonic travel time of water and oil measured from 5$^{\circ}C$ to 40$^{\circ}C$ at a step of 5$^{\circ}C$ is found as that the ultrasonic travel time of oil increases with increasing temperature, whereas that of water decreases. The proposed method for discriminating between water and oil is based on the opposite temperature dependence of ultrasonic travel time of water and oil. Besides the advantages of non-invasion and on-line measurement, there are no requirements of measuring the temperature of liquid being detected and obtaining previously a large quantity of database, and furthermore, only two times of measurements are ...

  • A new picking algorithm has been developed on real-time basis for finding the onset of P wave as well as discriminating the micro seismic signal from artificial noise. Unlike the previous methods which have used the STA/LTA ratio for discriminating the P arrivals, we have adopted the slope discrimination methods for identifying the P onset. As result, this algorithm has been turned out to be efficient in both accuracy and computation in on-line system.

  • An acoustic method for discriminating plankton from fish, in Lake Dom Helvecio of Brazil, is developed. The flow of data from this method is comprised of time varied threshold (TVT), dilation filter, bitmap and mask functions. The TVT can, of itself, precisely explain how to select an appropriate value. The final results of the echogram, which only shows plankton by masking fish signals, is used to examine the acoustic density of plankton by depth and time. The results indicate that the acoustic density of the plankton is at a depth of between 5m to 15m, its density is especially high at 10m to 15m. The results of the acoustic density of plankton by time indicate that May 7 is higher in density than May 8. Future study plans include the use of net samples, environmental datasets to identify the abundance and ecology described by the Chaoborus spp. from other species.

  • In this paper a novel feature extraction and selection is carried out in order to improve the discriminating capability between healthy and damaged structure using vibration signals. Although many feature extraction and selection algorithms have been proposed for vibration signals, most proposed approaches don't consider the discriminating ability of features since they are usually in unsupervised manner. We proposed a novel feature extraction and selection algorithm selecting few wavelet coefficients with higher class discriminating capability for damage detection and class visualization. We applied three class separability measures to evaluate the features, i.e. T test statistics, divergence, and Bhattacharyya distance. Experiments with vibration signals from truss structure demonstrate that class separabilities are significantly enhanced using our proposed algorithm compared to other two algorithms with original time-based features and Fourier-based ones.

  • This study has formed a clear definition of the elements of inquiry skills : inference, determining relationship, causal explanation, prediction, and created the goals of assessment and the items of assessment. They have been checked the validity and the objectivity and the clarity of the items by six professors of science education. At the same time, the two times of the field trial has been executed. and checked the discriminating power and the difficulty index and the effectiveness of distracters, and modified the items. The test developed in this way was administered to 1060 students of the eighth grade, randomly cluster-sampled from the universe, and standardized. The test is the aptitude test as well as the norm-reference test. and has twenty items. The testing-time is thirty minutes. And the cotent validity is 85%, the objectivity of the answer keys 91.7%, the mean of items difficulty 68.8%, the mean of discriminating power 0.39, the standard deviation 3.31, the reliability(K-R 20) 0.69. Because it is the standardized lest, it can diagnose the well-developed skills and the ill-developed skills of the students, and monitor the development of skills.

  • Passive source depth discrimination has been studied for decades since the source depth can be used for discriminating whether the target is near the surface or submerged. In this thesis, an algorithm for source depth discrimination is proposed based on CIR (Channel Impulse Response) from target-radiated noise (or signal). In order to extract CIR without a known source signal, Ray-based blind deconvolution is used. Subsequently, intersections of CIR pattern, which is characterized by ray arrival time difference, is utilized for discriminating source depth. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulation in ocean waveguide, and verified via the experimental data.

  • Conventional time-scale modification methods have the problem that as the modification rate gets higher the time-scale modified speech signal becomes less intelligible, because they ignore the effect of articulation rate on speech characteristics. Results of research on speech perception show that the timing information of transient portions of a speech signal plays an important role in discriminating among different speech sounds. Inspired by this fact, we propose a novel scheme for modifying the time-scale of speech. In the proposed scheme, the timing information of the transient portions of speech is preserved, while the steady portions of speech are compressed or expanded somewhat excessively for maintaining overall time-scale change. In order to identify the transient and steady portions of a speech signal, we employ a simple method using LPC cepstral distance between neighboring frames. The result of the subjective preference test indicates that the proposed method produces performance superior to that of the conventional SOLA method, especially for very fast playback case.

  • PD(Partial Discharge) signal emitted from PD sources has their intrinsic features in the region of time and frequency STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) shows time-frequency distribution at the same time. 2-Dimensional matrices(33$\times$77) from STFT for PD pulse signals are a good feature vectors and can be decreased in dimension by wavelet 2D data compression technique. Decreased feature vectors(13$\times$24) were used as inputs of Back-propagation ANN(Artificial Neural Network) for discrimination of Multi-PD sources(air discharge sources(3), surface discharge(1)). They are a good feature vectors for discriminating Multi-PD sources in the air.

  • Human model simulation has been widely used in various industrial areas such as ergonomic design, product evaluation and characteristic analysis of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. However, the process of building digital human models and capturing their behaviors requires many costly and time-consuming fabrication iterations. To overcome the limitations of this expensive and time-consuming process, many studies have recently presented a markerless motion capture approach that reconstructs the time-varying skeletal motions from optical devices. However, the drawback of the markerless motion capture approach is that the phenomenon of occlusion of motion data occurs in real-time human simulation. In this study, we propose a systematic method of discriminating missing or inaccurate motion data due to motion occlusion and interpolating a sequence of motion frames captured by a markerless depth camera.
