Physicochemical Characteristics of Rice Flour Gelatinized by Drum-Drying (드럼건조에 의한 알파미분의 물리화학적 특성)

  • Gelatinized rice flours were prepared by drum drying at different moisture contents of slurry made from dry milled and wet milled rice flours. Milled rice samples were prepared from the Chuchung and the Samgang varieties. Degree of gelatinization of drum-dried rice flours revealed over 92% at 60% moisture content of wet milled rice flours and 80% moisture content of dry milled ones. With regards to amylogram and rheological properties, drum-dried rice flours prepared from wet milled raw materials showed higher viscosity than from dry milled ones. Increasing water contents in the slurry increased water absorption index(WAI) and decreased water solubility index(WSI). Hunter's color values of drum-dried rice flour at high moisture contents showed higher L values and lower b values. For the preparation of gelatinized rice flours by drum drying process, the higher water content caused more gelatinized network structure of rice starch in scanning electron micrographs. With regards to farinogram properties of dough with drum-dried rice flours and wheat flours in mixing ratio of 1 to 9 by weight, drum-dried rice flours made from wet milled raw rice flours revealed higher MTI than from dry milled ones.

Drying Characteristics of Minced Fish on Drum Dryers (잘게 저민 생선의 드럼건조기에 의한 건조특성)

  • The effects of drum spacing, steam pressure and drum speed on drying rate of minced fish flesh on both single and double drum dryers were studied. Starch additions in the form of tapioca flour up to 2.5% have been found satisfactory for aiding in sheet formation at the doctor blade. When the retention time was adjusted to maintain a constant product moisture, the highest production rate was obtained at the smallest drum spacing and the highest steam pressure within the limits of experimental conditions considered. The operating conditions suitable for producing the flakes with 5% moisture were: 100 kPa (steam pressure), 0.1 mm (drum spacing) and 3 rpm (drum speed). The production rate and overall heat transfer coefficient under these conditions were $12.1\;kg/m^2$hr and 950 $W\;/m^2K$ respectively. The drying data were fitted well to the conventional drying model, namely $MR\;=\;A\;\exp\;(-k{\theta})$, resulting in the various drying constants depending the operating conditions.

  • The condensation water temperature $(T_{CW})$ distributions on the combi-drum washer of condensation type which the cloth washes, rinses, spins and dry cloth over a heater were measured using the thermocouples. During the drying process, in order to find out the relationship between the $T_{CW}$ distribution and the cloth dryness level $(C_{D1})$, the experiment was made for the dehydration rate of the cloth $(C_{D0})$ is 63%, the weight of cloth $(W_{C0})$ from 1 to 6kg. In result, according to $W_{C0}$ and $C_{D0}$, the distributions of $T_{CW}$ are very different. Using this tendency, it was appropriate and it developed the automatic drying algorithm and it was gotten dryness level regardless of $W_{C0}$, $C_{D0}$ and the other factor.

Effects of Various Thermal Treatments on Physicochemical Properties of Wheat Bran (밀기울에 대한 열처리가 이화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Various thermal treatments such as toasting, roasting, drum drying, autoclaving+drum drying, microwaving+drum drying and extrusion were attempted to investigate their effects on chemical composition (proximate composition, Klason lignin, neutral sugar, uronic acid, starch, free sugar, dietary fiber, phytic acid, etc) and functional properties (water solubility index, water absorption index, water holding capacity, oil holding capacity, bulk density, swelling, etc) of wheat bran. Thermal treatments on wheat bran increased soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content from 2.7% (raw sample) to 4.6% (toasted), 4.5% (roasted), 4.6% (drum dried), 5.2% (autoclaved), 3.7% (microwaved), 5.6% (extruded). In contrast, total dietary fiber (TDF) content remained nearly constant regardless of thermal treatments, reflecting the concomitant decrease in insoluble dietary fiber (IDF). It was also found that water holding capacity (WHC) increased $20{\sim}75%$ due to thermal treatments employed in this research. Both bulk density and swelling were not directly relevant to WHC, but thier multiplication exhibited good correlation $(R^2=0.94)$ with WHC. Scanning elctron microscopy (SEM) exhibited that structure of raw wheat bran was significantly modified, whose degree and shape well reflected the types of thermal treatments.

  • By laying its drum horizontally, front-loaded washing machine mostly used in Europe that uses the head of the water to launder was appropriate for washing only small amount of laundry. However, the demands of customers are requiring front-loaded washing machine to handle big capacity laundry as well, and have faster rotation speed to increase drying ability. To meet such demands, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Flange is located between the drum and shaft, transferring power from the shaft to drum, and acting as a supporter of the back of the drum. Shaft is connected from the flange to insert production, transferring power from the motor to drum, and mainly acting as stiffness against the horizontal weight of the shafting system. In this paper, strength analysis and experiment were executed on both the shaft and flange of front-loaded washing machine to suggest the design improvement of shafting system for big capacity, high-rotation drying. Also, verification of this evaluation was executed on fracture strength and fatigue life for studied shaft system.

  • The characteristics of a condenser dryer and a vented dryer that are common types of domestic clothes dryers for home use are predicted and compared in an effort to improve the efficiency and to overcome economical and environmental problems due to its inefficient power consumption. In the present study, a drying system is simplified by assuming the mechanism is composed of several elements such as heater and drum and mathematical models using the mass and energy conservation of moisture and air through each element are defined. Based on this mathematical model, the computational tool is developed to predict temperature, humidity and enthalpy of moisture and air in a drum and remained moisture contents (RMC) in drying materials. The computational results are verified by comparing with experimental results from existing studies. In addition, the efficiency of a dryer is calculated using these predicted results for a given condition and the drying characteristics of a condenser dryer and a vented dryer are compared and analyzed.

  • This trial was carried out to set up a proper drum speed of thresher to minimize the mechanical damage from threshing and thereby to obtain rye seeds possessing higher qualities for seeds. Rye plants were harvested at from 40 to 60 days after heading (DAH) with 5 days intervals and spread out on the field for 0, I, 2, 3 days for drying, respectively. After drying the plants were subjected to threshing at seven steps of drum speed from 400 to 1000 rotation per minute (RPM) of a thresher, drum diam. 18.6cm, teeth length 6cm. At 500 to 600 RPM and from the plants harvested at 55DAH with drying for one or two days, the seeds possessed low grain damage, high germinability over 90%, and field emergence rate over 80%.

  • Generally, liquid radioactive wastes generated in nuclear power plant exist in powder form which do not contain moisture through the evaporating process of the Liquid Waste Management System and drying process of the Concentrated Waste Drying System. This powder form wastes are blended homogeneously with paraffin solidification agent and packed in metal drum to ensure its stability during handling and disposal. However, it was experienced that the powder form wastes were not blended homogeneously and separated into two layers in metal drum, on the other hand, a Portion of powder was adhered and solidified to the Inside parts of facility during the blending process. And the flaw of blending process above would come in case the mole ratio of Boron to Sodium in liquid radioactive wastes exceeds 0.2.
