  • A modular multilevel-clamped composited multilevel converter ($M-MC^2$) is proposed. $M-MC^2$ enables topology reconfiguration, power device reuse, and composited clamping. An advanced five-level converter ($5L-M-MC^2$) is derived from the concept of $M-MC^2$. $5L-M-MC^2$ integrates dual three-level T-type modules and one three-level neutral point clamped module. This converter can also integrate dual three-level T-type modules and one passive diode module by utilizing the device reuse scheme. The operation principle and SPWM modulation are discussed to highlight converter performance. The proposed $M-MC^2$ is comprehensively compared with state-of-the-art five-level converters. Finally, simulations and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the main contributions of this study.

  • In this paper, we design and fabricate a short range FMCW radar which detects and tracks a moving target in a two-dimensional domain using dual transceiver modules. For the short range radar, we propose a scheme for alternate extraction of the two-dimensional positions using one-dimensional range information from time division transceiver modules, and successfully apply the scheme to the two-dimensional short range radar. Measured results of the targets at 10 m and 30 m are presented as performance demonstration of each transceiver module. Also the performance of the two-dimensional radar is demonstrated using a two-dimensional target map, which uses the range bin corresponding to the frequency resolution, and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated.

  • In this paper, we propose a new fault tolerant architecture for high availability systems, where for module internal operations both processor modules perform the same tasks at the same time independently of each other while for module external operations both processor modules act actively. That is, operations of synchronization between dual processor modules except clock synchronization are requested only when module external operations are executed. The architecture can not only improve system availability by reducing system reintegration time but also reduce performance degradation problem due to frequent synchronization between dual processor modules. The clock unit consists of a clock generator and a clock synchronization circuit. This supplies a stable clock signal under clock unit disorder of any processor module or rapid clock signal variation. And this architecture achieves system availability and data credibility by designing as symmetrical form.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency Switch Mode Line Transformer (SMLT) composed of load-shared dual modules, which is based on the AC/AC LLC resonant converter. Given that the conventional adaptor is usually composed of two power stages, namely, the PFC and DC/DC converters, its system size can be increased according to the output power. However, given that the proposed SMLT can separate the PFC converter from the adaptor, the size reduction of the system can be achieved. Meanwhile, the SMLT with a single module has the limit of the size reduction because of a high resonant current. Thus, it can be configured with dual or multiple modules to reduce the resonant current. Then, their load sharing can be guaranteed by only the proposed transformer structure without an extra current controller. The validity of the proposed converter is proven through a 850-W prototype.

  • In this paper an alternative Active Matrix LCD technology is described with scalable, low cost processing. The Dual Select Diode AMLCD requires 60% lower capital investment in the array process than a-Si TFT arrays and results in 20% lower cost LCD modules. Development at several AMLCD manufacturers is in progress.

  • This paper proposes a dual lifting and its cooperative control system with two different kinds of floating cranes. The Mega-erection and Giga-erection in the ship building are used to handle heavier and wider blocks and modules as ships and off-shore platforms are enlarged. However, there is no equipment to handle such Tera-blocks. In order to overcome the limit on performance of existing floating cranes, the dual lifting is proposed in this research. In the dual lifting, two floating cranes are well-coordinated to add up the lift capabilities of both cranes without any loss such that virtually a single crane is lifting, maneuvering and unloading. Two main constraints for the dual lifting are as follows: First, two barges of floating cranes should be constrained as a rigid body not to cause a relative motion between two barges and main hooks of the two cranes should be controlled as main hooks of a single crane. In order words, it is necessary to develop the cooperative control of two floating cranes in order to sustain a center of gravity of the module and minimize the tilting angle during the lifting and unloading by the two floating cranes. Two floating cranes are handled as a master-slave system. The master crane is able to gather information about all working conditions and make a decision to control the individual hook speed, which communicates the slave crane by TCP/IP. The developed control system has been embedded in the real floating crane systems and the dual lifting has been demonstrated five times at SHI shipyard in 2015. The moving angles of the lifting module are analyzed and verified to be suitable for hoisting control. It is verified that the dual lifting can be applied for many heavier and wider blocks and modules to shorten the construction time of ships and off-shore platforms.

  • An SPLC (Safety Programmable Logic Controller) must be designed to meet the highest safety standards, IEEE 1E, and should guarantee a level of fault-tolerance and high-reliability that ensures complete error-free operation. In order to satisfy these criteria, I/O modules, communication modules, processor modules and bus modules of the SPLC have been configured in triple or dual modular redundancy. The redundant modules receive the same data to determine the final data by the voting logic. Currently, the processor of each rx module performs the voting by deciding on the final data. It is the intent of this paper to prove the improvement on the current system, and develop a voting system for multiple data on a system bus level. The new system bus protocol is implemented based on a TCN-MVB that is a deterministic network consisting of a master-slave structure. The test result shows that the suggested system is better than the present system in view of its high utilization and improved performance of data exchange and voting.

  • The preliminary test for the dual mode plasma torch system was carried out to explore the operation properties in advance. The dual mode plasma torch system that is able to operate in transferred, non-transferred, or dual mode is very adequate for melting the mixed wastes including nonconductive materials such as concrete, asbestos, etc. since it exploits both the high efficiency of heat transfer to the melt in transferred mode and stable operation in non-transferred mode. Also, system operation including restarting is reliable and very easy. A stationary melter with a refractory structure was designed and manufactured considering the melting behavior of slags to minimize the refractory erosion. The power supply for the dual mode plasma torch system built with high power insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules has functions for both current control and voltage control and is sufficient to suppress the harmonics during the operation of the plasma torch. The power supply provides two different voltages for transferred operation and non-transferred. It is confirmed that the operation voltage in transferred is always higher than non-transferred. The dual mode plasma torch system was successfully developed and is under operation for a melting experiment to optimize operation data.

  • Smart transformers are effective at reducing the weight and increasing the efficiency of traction systems for railroad applications. A smart transformer generally consists of rectifier modules and the Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter modules. The efficiency of the smart transformer depends on not only the electrical characteristics, but also on the control method of the converter modules. Especially, a DAB converter has a high order degree of freedom of voltage modulation to control the power transferred through the high frequency transformer, and a voltage modulation method, are very critical for the efficiency of the DAB converter. This paper proposes a new voltage modulation method for the DAB converter to increase the efficiency in the low/medium power transfer condition. The proposed modulation method controls the reactive power in the high frequency transformer, making it zero. And, the switching loss is dramatically reduced by using the received converter module as a diode rectifier. The feasibility of the proposed modulation method is verified by computer simulation of the 900Vdc DAB converter power control.
