  • In the current seismic design codes design earthquake is usually defined as the earthquake with the 90 percent probability of not being exceeded in the life time of a structure which is assumed as 50 years equivalent to the earthquake with 475 year recurrence period. However the life time of tall building structures may be much longer than 50 yers. The current seismic design code requires the modal analysis or dynamic time history analysis for the buildings with the height exceeding a certain height limit. The objective of this study is to collect the earthquake ground motion(EQGM) which can be used for dynamic time history analysis for tall buildings. For this purpose linear elastic design response spectrum (LEDRS) in the code is scaled to account for the recurrence period of the design earthquake. The earthquake ground motions which has been recorded are calibrated to fit the scaled LEDRS. The set of calibrated EQGM can be treated as design EQGM for the design of tall building with longer lifetime than ordinary building.

  • This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wane compatible with seismic design spectrum. In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on dynamic characteristics of structures. Therefore, it is important to properly select input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the artificial earthquake wave are generated according to previously recorded earthquake waves in past earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wane, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. Each simulated earthquake wave has a identical phase angles to the original recorded ground acceleration, and match to design response spectra in the range of period from 0.02 to 10.0 seconds. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper ate applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

  • The updated Turkish Building Earthquake Code has been significantly renovated and expanded compared to previous seismic design codes. The use of earthquake ground motion levels with different probabilities of exceedance is one of the major advances in structural mechanics with the current code. This study aims to investigate the earthquake performance of steel structure in settlements with different seismic hazards for various earthquake ground motion levels. It is focused on earthquake and structural parameters for four different ground motion levels with different probabilities of exceedance calculated according to the location of the structure by the updated Turkish Hazard Map. For this purpose, each of the seven different geographical regions of Turkey which has the same seismic zone in the previous earthquake hazard map has been considered. Earthquake parameters, horizontal design elastic spectra obtained and comparisons were made for all different ground motion levels for the seven different locations, respectively. Structural analyzes for a sample steel structure were carried out using pushover analysis by using the obtained design spectra. It has been determined that the different ground motion levels significantly affect the expected target displacements of the structure for performance criteria. It is noted that the different locations of the same earthquake zone in the previous code with the same earthquake-building parameters show significant variations due to the micro zoning properties of the updated seismic design code. In addition, the main innovations of the updated code were discussed.

  • A performance-based seismic design method for reinforced concrete building structures being developed in Japan is outlined. Technical and scientific background of the performance-based design philosophy as well as recently developed seismic design guidelines are is presented, in which maximum displacement response to design earthquake motion is used as the limit-state design criteria. A method of estimating dynamic response displacement of the structures based on static nonlinear analysis is described. A theoretical estimation of nonlinear dynamic response considering the characteristics of energy input to the system is described in detail, which may be used as the standard method in the new performance-based code. A desing philosophy not only satisfying the criteria but also evaluating seismic capacity of the structures is also introduced.

  • The earthquake resistant design for roadway bridges introduced in 1992 is conducted according to the "Standard Specification for Roadway Bridges", Division V, Seismic Design and the first revision of the Standard was done in 1996. However, dur to different concepts of the earthquake resistant design from those of the other designs, the provisions given in the Standard are still not applied appropriately. In this paper the verification of the earthquake resistant capacity of a bridge with typical configurations, 5-span steel box girder bridge, is carried out based on the application rules of the present Standard in order to provide clear understandings about the earthquake resistant verification and the earthquake resistant design as well.n as well.

  • Becaruse of the continual occurrence of minor and moderate earthquake in Korean peninsula, it is generally considered that Korean is nor located in safe region against probable earthquake and more, even though being recognized as a safe contry in earthquake. It is in particular noted that nowadays there has been much concern about undesirable disaster due to unexpected earthquake since the disaster of 1995 Kobe earthquake. Thus, the objective of this research is to develop appropriate design spectrum which could be practicably used in seismic design of important structures taking into consideration of local physical characteristics. Particularly, we have to keep in mind the lessons from 1985 Mexico earthquake which had disregarded deep research on local ground conditions, being a possible magnification phenomena of ground motions in weak soil layer. Various spectra has been described based on the analysis of historical earthquakes, and appropriate design spectrum has been proposed herein.

  • Performance-based design concepts require the next generation of codes. To implement the main concepts several design methodologies have been proposed. This paper reviews the framework of Korea Seismic Code and shows necessary modification for adoption of appropriate design methods. The selection of design earthquake levels with the introduction of risk factor is discussed for proper risk levels for all earthquake hazards. Displacement-based design, energy-based design, comprehensive design, and force-strength design methods are reviewed as one of possible next generation design methods. This paper proposes the direction of reconstruction for design earthquake levels with performance matrix, introduction of new design methods, and emphasis on non- structural components.

  • A new earthquake design method performing iterative calculations using secant stiffness was developed. The proposed design method has the advantages of convenience and stability in numerical analysis because it uses elastic analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the strength and ductility demands on the members because it performs the analysis on the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculation. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were presented by the comparisons with existing design methods using elastic or inelastic analysis. The proposed design method, as an integrated method of analysis and design, can address the earthquake design strategy devised by the engineer, such as ductility limit on each member, the design concept of strong column - weak beam, and etc. Through iterative calculations on the structure preliminarily designed only with member sizing, the strength and ductility demands of each member can be directly calculated so as to satisfy the given design strategy As the result economical and safe design can be achieved.
