  • In order to understand the properties of high heat input welds made by electro gas welding, two kinds of low temperature steel were welded. Welding heat inputs were controlled by width of root gap and ranged from 118 to 143kJ/cm. Chemical composition and micro-structural analysis were performed. To understand low temperature impact properties, Charpy impact test was conducted at several temperatures. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Grain size of weld metal and heat affected zone was increased with an increase in welding heat input. 2) Impact test values at fusion line were severely fluctuated regardless of base metals, showing enormous difference among the values at the same test temperature.

  • Joining thin aluminum alloy is difficult using most welding techniques. Many of the problems are associated with bum-through by the high heat input. Common welding techniques are TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), MIG (Metal Inert Gas), and PULSE-MIG welding. The method provides more control of the heat balance in the welding arc by taking advantage of the different arc characteristics obtained with each of the two polarities. In this paper, we proposed a new welding method by control DSP 320C32, and the characteristic and experiment result-voltage, current, welding bead, and penetrations by this method are presented.

  • This study examined the welding residual stress and fracture toughness of 78mm thick steel electro gas welding (EGW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) welded joints by numerical analyses of the thermal elasto-plastic behavior and fracture toughness(KIC). The residual stress, fracture toughness characteristics and production mechanism on the welded joints were clarified. Moreover, the effects of the welding process (EGW and FCAW) on the welding residual stresses and fracture toughness of welded joints were evaluated. The results showed that the new welding process (EGW) appears to be an effective substitute for the existing welding process (FCAW) in a thick steel plate with high strength.

  • EGW process has been applied to joining of ship block with vertical-up position at high production rate. The workability of EGW, however, has been interrupted by too much slag production. Two electrodes EGW showed more severe workability than that of one electrode EGW. Therefore, to understand the effect of discharge amount of EGW slag on workability and mechanical properties, two different slag discharge amount have been controlled at the same welding conditions. The results are as follows; 1) Workability has been improved by any additional slag discharge. 2) Mechanical properties have been deteriorated with any additional slag discharge. 3) Chemical compositions of weld metal have been changed by any additional slag discharge.

  • The study was performed in order to develop high efficient Electrode Gas Welding with additional solid wire by means of a surplus heat source. This technique can be reduced welding heat input in the weldments, welding speed can be increased over 30%, and mechanical properties can be more excellent than traditional method.

  • High capacity container carrier has been considered for many decades to transport the more containers at the same time. Therefore, it is required for high capacity container ship to be applied thicker plate to accomodate a number of containers compared to that of general container ship. To maintain the same productivity of this thicker plate, new welding process should be considered. One of the process for vertical-up position is 2 electrodes EGW(Electro Gas Welding). 2 ectrodes EGW was applied and evaluated whether it can be applicable or not. The heat input used for 72mm thick plate was 520k11cm. from the mechanical test, it is considered that this process can be applicable, showing satisfaction of mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and impact property.

  • 316L stainless steel welding tube was electrolytically polished and the inner surface characteristics of the tube were tested. Electro-polishing variables such as current, voltage, concentration of electrolyte and electropolishing time were changed to seek for optimum condition. These makes a optimum conditions for the electro-polishing as 4000 A, 9 V, 1.7 specific gravity of electrolyte, and 30 minute of electro-polishing time. It makes the surface roughness as Ra < $0.25{\mu}m$. XPS test resulted as the ratio of CrO/FeO equals or more to 3/1. AES test resulted as the thickness of CrO film of $38{\AA}$. DTA test resulted as the tube did not react with $N_2,\;H_2\;and\;O_2$ gas below 1073K. As summarize above results, the electro- polished 316L stainless steel welding tube satisfied the conditions to apply as a pipeline for semi- conductor production facility and clean room.
