Objectives : The study was designed to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture on patients with insomnia in China. Methods : We performed systematic review of case-control studies of electroacupuncture on patients with insomnia published from 1994 to 2009 in CNKI(中國知識基礎施設工程 http://www.cnki.net). Results : 17 studies were selected. The electroacupuncture points frequently used were Sinmun(神門), Sameumgy(三陰交), Baekhoe(百會), Sasinchong(四神聰), etc. G6805 electroacupuncture instrument were mostly used in those studies and the treating methods of electroacupuncture were various according to each study. Combination of both Electroacupuncture and other therapy reported better results than simple therapy such as simple electroacupuncture or acupuncture, western medicine, herbal medicine, auricular therapy. Conclusions : There have been many studies of electroacupuncture on patients with insomnia in China and these studies can applied to the clinical practices in Korea.
Introduction : The aim of the study is to investigate the suppressive action of electroacupuncture on cold alloynia development in the rat model of neuopathic pain. Methods : To produce neuropathic pain, the right superior caudal trunk was resected $1{\sim}2\;mm$ between S1 and S2 spinal nerves. The rats were divided into control and four electroacupuncture groups: Two electroacupuncture groups were given 2 Hz or 100 Hz electroacupuncture for 20 minutes everyday after the sacral nerve injury. Other two electroacupuncture groups were given 2 Hz or 100 Hz electroacupuncture for 20 minutes just one session at one hour after the sacral nerve injury. The right point of Joksamni (ST36) was applied for electroacupuncture. The control group was induced neuropathic pain without electroacupuncture. The cold allodynia was assessed by immersing the tail in $4^{\circ}C$ water. The latency to an abrupt tail movement after rat tail immersion was measured with a cut-off time of 15 sec at 4th, 7th and 14th day after the sacral nerve injury. Results : The results were as follows; 1. At 4th experimental day, there were no significant differences between 2 Hz or 100 Hz electroacupuncture groups and the control group. 2. At 7th experimental day, everyday 2 Hz or 100 Hz electroacupuncture groups showed significant differences compared with the control group. But There were no significant differences between 2 Hz and 100 Hz electroacupuncture groups. 3. At 14th experimental day, everyday 2 Hz electroacupuncture group showed significant differences compared with the control group. But everyday 100 Hz electroacupuncture group showed no significant difference compared with the control group and everyday 2 Hz electroacupuncture group. 4. There were no significant differences between the control and 2 Hz or 100 Hz electroacupuncture groups which were done just one session at one hour after the surgery. 5. Everyday 2 Hz electroacupuncture group showed significant differences in the one session of the 100 Hz electroacupuncture group. Conclusion : Everyday 2 Hz electroacupuncture exerts a suppressive action on cold allodynia development in the rat model of neuropathic pain.
The present experiment was performed in 35 normal male volunteers to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture on the human nociception more clearly and to demonstrate the effect of different parameters of electrical stimulation through acupuncture needles. The threshold of the pain(Tp) and the nociceptive flexion reflex(Tr), the threshold for intolerable pain(Tip) and that for obtaining maximal reflex response(Tmr) were studied before and after electroacupuncture performed on the acupoints of tsusanli and hsuanchung. 1) For the pricking pain, electroacupuncture with intermittent stimulation induced a significant decrease in Tp which recovered after removal of the needles. There was no significant change in other thresholds. 2) For the dull pain, electroacupuncture with intermittent stimulation produced a significant increase in Tp which continued after removal of the needles. But there was no signifcant change in Tip. Electroacupuncture with continuous stimulation induced a slight increase in Tp. 3) After resting without electroacupuncture, Tp and Tip of the dull pain were slightly decreased. These results suggest that electroacupuncture had no significant analgesic effect on the pricking pain induced by electrical stimulation of the foot skin. However, electroacupuncture with intermittent stimulation had significant analgesic effect on the weak dull pain and it had slightly greater analgesic effect than electroacupuncture with continuous stimulation.
Gastro-intestinal mortility and transit time of barium sulfate after electroacupuncture were investigated in normal dogs and administration of xylatine in dogs. Electroacupuncture was performed with a current of 1.5 volt and 20 Hz at the acupoints of Tsu San Li(right(+) left(-) in dogs for 30 minutes. The results were as follows: 1. After electroacupuncture stimnlation in normal dogs, rates of stomach contractions was not changed, but amplitudes of stomach motility was markadly increased. The electroacupuncture stimulation tasted about 60 minutes after the end of electroacupuncture. 2. The stomach contractions was markedly increased, while the amplitudes of stomach motility was sligltly decreased by the administration of xylazine in dogs. 3. The rates of stomach contractions and amplitudes of motility were markedly increased after administration of xylazine in the electroacupuncture stimulated dogs. 4. Gastric emptying time o barium sulfate after electroacupuncture stimulation in dogs was highly significantly decreased compared with that of normal dogs(p < 0.01). 5. Small bowel transit time of barium sulfate after electroacupuncture stimulation in dogs was highly significantly decreased compared with that of normal dogs (p < 0.01). 6. Gastroduodenal transit time of barium sulfate after administration of xylazine following electroacupuncture stimulation dogs was blighty significantly decreased compared to that of dogs dosed with xylazine (p< 0.01). 7. Small bowel transit time of barium sulfate after administration of xylazine following electroacupuncture stimulation dogs markedly decreased compared to that of dogs dosed with xylazine (p < 0.05).
To elucidate the effect of dorsal acupoints for canine electroacupuncture anesthesia, mongrel dogs(6 heads: 2.6-10.5kg, 3 males and 3 females) were used. After needling perpendicularly to Tian-Ping(GV-5) and Bai-Hui(GV-20), the electrodes were connected with positive to Tian-Ping and negative to Bi-hui, respectively using with veterinary electroacupuncture apparatus(TEC AM-3000). The electric conditions were 2-4V and 30 Hz. The pain of body surface was checked by hemostatic forceps. The effect of electroacupuncture andesthesia was appreciated by application of laparotomy(2 heads), ear trimming and tail amputation(1 head), castration(2 heads) and enterotomy(1 head), respectively. Induction time, clinical findings and operation findings were investigated under the electroacupuncture anesthesia. The induction time of electroacupuncture anesthesia was very rapid, approximately 1 minute and the pain of body surface including the extremities was not detected. As for clinical findings during electroacupuncture anesthesia, consciousness was evident, pupil reflex was weak and blepharoreaction was existed. As for operation findings, pain was not detected during incision and suture, and bleeding was relatively small volume. The grade of electroacupuncture anesthesia was excellent in all cases applied with ear trimming and tail amputation, laparatomy, castration and enterotomy. Considering above all findings, it was thought that electroacupuncture stimulation at Tian-Ping and Bai-hui examined in the present study induced excellent electroacupuncture anesthesia for dogs.
Objectives : In order to observe clinical effects, carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture, we analyzed relation effect and patients' character, and researched correlation among reduction of BFM(Body Fat Mass), WHR(Waist-Hip Ratio) and AC(Arm Circumference). Methods : Among outpatients who had admitted to department of oriental rehabilitation medicine, Dae-Jeon oriental medicine hospital, Dae-Jeon university from January to September, 2008 for obesity treatment and abdominal fat, 44 subjects were chosen and carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture were practiced concurrently. Results : 1. The group under the concurrent practice of carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture showed significant decrease in BFM, BFR(Body Fat Rate), WHR and AC. 2. The group under the concurrent practice of carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture did not show statistical significance but showed decrease in BFM, WHR. The degree of decrease was proportional to that of obesity. 3. As AC decreased, BFM, WHR reduction tended to increase as well in the group under the concurrent practice of carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture. 4. Compared to the group under the sole practice of electroacupuncture, the group under the concurrent practice of carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture showed less change in BFM reduction and greater change in WHR reduction. Conclusions : From the above results, the concurrent practice of carboxytherapy and electroacupuncture had an effect on obesity and reducing abdominal fat, but did not show statistically significant decrease compare to the sole practice of electroacupuncture.
This study was performed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture on the ruminal disorders such as ruminal stony, ruminal impact, and ruminal tympany in dairy cattle. The therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture to ruminal stony and tympany were much better than those by medicaments and the combination of medicaments and electroacupuncture showed the most effective outcome of remedy. However, there was no difference in recovery rate of ruminal impact according to electroacupuncture, and medicaments alon, or combination of acupuncture and medicaments.
Objectives : The electroacupuncture was generally has been used in oriental medicine doctors. In recent years, there have been a few studies about safety and stability of acupuncture needle in itself, but then again research of acupuncture needle safety and stability on applying electroacupuncture have been insignificant. Therefore we investigated the safety and change in mechanical characteristic of acupuncture needle in electroacupuncture therapy. Methods : We observed mechanical characteristic change by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), evaluated the hardness by vickers hardness tester. We used MTT assay and cell stain to study about biocompatibility of electroacupuncture. Results : In this study, any corrosion of material, alternation of elements, and change of hardness were not observed in surface analysis using SEM and EDX. In cytotoxity evaluation using MTT assay and cell stain, cell survival rate was low when practicing the electroacupuncture for more than 3 hours. Conclusions : Change of mechanical property was not observed based on the test results using surface analysis and hardness estimation by the electroacupuncture. And considering the biocompatibility, electroacupuncture was thought to be safe in an hour based on cytotoxity evaluation using MTT assay and cell stain.
Ruminal and abomasal motility after electroacupuncture was investigated in normal goats and in goats with induced hypocalcaemia. Electroacupuncture was performed with a current of 1 volt and 3Hz at the acupoints of Tien Ping(positive) and Pai Hui(negative) for 30 minutes. The adequate range of electroacupuncture stimulation for goats was 1 to 2 volt and 2 to 3 Hz. After electroacupuncture stimulation in normal goats, rates of rumen and abomasal contractions were not changed or were slightly increased, but amplitudes of rumen and abomasal motility markedly increased. The effects of electroacupuncture stimulation lasted from about 10 minutes to 30 minutes after the end of electroacupuncture. The amplitudes of rumen motility were increased by the administration of bethanechol chlorids in goats. Ruminal contractions were not influenced by electroacupuncture following atropine sulphate. The rates of rumen and abomasal movements were not changed, but its amplitudes were reduced by inducing hypocalcaemia in goats. Motilily of the rumen and abomasum was not accelerated by electroacupuncture in goats with induced hypocalcaemia.

This study was performed to investigate the reverse effects of Jen Chung electroacupuncture at 10 and 30 min after xylazine administration(0.1mg/kg) in goats. In the group of electroacupuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration, MAT and MWT were markedly shorter than in control and in 10 min after xylazine administration. The RR intervals were continuously increased in control and in the group of electroacupuncture at 10 min after xylazine administration, but in the group of electroacapuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration significantly reduced from about 45 min. The frequency(cps) of EEG was recovered to normal pattern after 90 min in the group of electroacupuncture at 30 min after xylazine administration, but considerably delayed in control and in the group of electroacupuncture at 10 min. Respiratory rates tended to be somewhat decreased and then gradually increased in all groups. In control, there were shown cycloapneustic respirations but no in the electroacupuncture groups. It was turned out to be that the electroacupuncture stimulation of Jen Chung at 30 min after xylazine administration was effective for the reverse of the xylazine analgesia.
