  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of meteorological environment variation before and after construction of Nak-dong river estuary barrage. We used meteorological data(air temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, visibility, wind) at Gimhae airport meteorological station. The construction of river estuary barrage can change climate at the neighboring districts and influence human's health and vegetable. The construction of Nakdong river estuary barrage brought rise of temperature, decrease of relative humidity and increase of poor visibility frequency.

  • Current study is a part of the efforts to assess the estuarine barrage effects on the coastal ecosystem induced by the Si flux changes. Surface sediments from Seomjin and Nakdong estuary and sediment cores from Nakdong estuary was analysed to investigate the effect of estuarine barrage on the distribution of grain size, organic matter (loss on ignition: LOI) and biogenic silica (BSi). The samples of Seomjin estuary were collected in March, 2015 and those of Nakdong estuary were collected in November, 2014. Generally, the longitudinal distribution of grain size, LOI and BSi in Seomjin estuary, natural estuary, was gradually changed. However mud (silt and clay), LOI and BSi increased from station mid-estuary where tide reaches year-round. The distribution of grain size, LOI and BSi in Nakdong estuary, however, were entirely different between inside and outside of estuarine barrage. The mud percentage and LOI were low and consistent in inside of the barrage except R05, inside of right gate, yet those of outside of the barrage were higher and varied by adjacent sluices. Mud, LOI and BSi of ND1 and ND2 decreased immediately after the construction of Nakdong estuarine barrage due to disturbance of sediment and decrease of sediment supply. To exclude the physical effects by the barrage, BSi excess ($BSi_{exc}$) was calculated using regression equation of BSi-LOI and BSi-mud of Seomjin estuary. $BSi_{exc}$ of Seomjin estuary decreased gradually from upper estuary to lower estuary. $BSi_{exc}$ of Nakdong estuary were positive in inside of the barrage and negative in outside of the barrage. BSi retention and shift of species composition of diatom by the barrage would affect $BSi_{exc}$ distribution. Before the construction of Nakdong estuarine barrage, $BSi_{exc}$ of ND2 was negative and consistent owing to high mud sedimentation. After the construction, $BSi_{exc}$ of ND2, however, fluctuated due to continuous disturbance of sediment due to construction of Eulsuk bridge and East gate.

  • The Nakdong Estuary Barrage is a tidal river environment where freshwater and seawater meet. This requires systematic monitoring of both surface water discharged from the estuary barrage and submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, upstream hydrograph and water balance analysis were used to calculate the change in water storage and discharge of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage. Submarine groundwater discharge was also calculated based on remote sensing-based digital elevation model data and hydrological modeling data, and compared with the estimated surface water discharge for analysis. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to water resource management by utilizing remote sensing-based altimeter data other than field measurement. Because submarine groundwater discharge plays a significant role on the coastal environment as well as surface water discharge from an estuary barrage, studies on groundwatersurface water interactions in a river estuary should be sufficiently considered in monitoring the ecosystem of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage.

  • Geum River Estuary Barrage is very important for the irrigation, municipal and industrial uses in the cities of Gunsan, Iksan and Jeonju. The Geum River Control Office has a flood forecasting system; however, the current system does not consider the backwater effects. As a result, it is very difficult to give correct flood information, and it is difficult to accurately assess the water resource supply and saltwater invasion into freshwater, as frequently occurs due to over-discharge during floods. In this study, we investigate the flood forecasting system for the Geum River reach influenced by the estuary barrage. The current system cannot consider the backwater effect because the estuary barrage blocks the end of the river. We calculated the discharge from the tide lock and evaluated the inside water level of the estuary barrage during floods. The results show that the calculation agrees well with the observed data at the river stage stations in the Geum River. The results also show that this program is a reasonable substitute for the current system.

  • After the completion of the Nakdong River estuary barrage, environmental characteristics and phytoplankton communities in the estuary were investigated from April to December, 1989. dissolved oxygen seems to have decreased in the just lower region of the barrage off Janglim, while ammonia and phosphate concentration increased, probably due to the waste discharge from the Janglim stream and stagnation of water after the barrage construction. Concentrations of nitrate and dissolved silicate were negatively correlated with salinity, suggesting that major source is the Nakdong River discharge. In April, there was a diatom (Asterinella sp.) bloom in the upper region of the barrage, while in July, a diatom (Skeletonema costatum) bloom in the estuary mouth. The green and blue-green algae in species composition seem to have increased after the barrage construction. The relatively high concentration of chlorophyll b in the upper region of the barrage probably result from the high density of freshwater green-algae there. Among the species occurred in the study area, many were indicative of water pollution. It seems that environmental characters and phytoplankton communities are changing after the barrage construction.

  • The present study analyzed the variation factors in inducing a salinity change using the existing observation network in the section between the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage and Changnyeong-Haman Weir, and also examined the seasonal changes in precipitation, salinity, and discharge. Furthermore, this study analyzed the causes of a salinity increase by collecting observational data during a period when abnormal salinity occurred, and further investigated the salinity transfer time in a section of approximately 5.3 km from the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage to Nakdong River Bridge to understand the behavioral characteristics of the salinity moving upstream. The study results would make it possible to control the increase in salinity and block salt water from moving upstream by understanding the salinity variation characteristics according to the discharge amount. This will provide stability in collecting water from various residential, agricultural, and industrial sources through water intake facilities scattered near the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage.

  • Shaking table tests were performed to reproduce the dynamic behavior of estuary barrage and its subbase soil which can be potentially damaged during earthquake loading. For understanding the vibration effect to the ground during earthquake, the model was formulated with 1/300 scale of prototype estuary barrage and subbase soil. Scott and Iai(1989) proposed the law of the similarity for similar experimental conditions. The laboratory model shaking table test was conducted under the vibration condition of simulated earthquake of 0.154g. The horizontal displacement on the structure was measured during the shaking table test. The pore water pressure was also monitored for the underground layers of soil. The field horizontal displacement and the pore water pressure can be predicted by using the results of the laboratory shaking table test.

  • Numerical simulations on the suspended sediment transport in the Nakdong Estuary are carried out Uncoupled flow model and diffusion model of which the governing equations are two-dimensional depth integrated equations are used int his study. Four cases are tested in this numerical simulations in which the Gaduk waterway open boundary condition and Nakdong Estuary barrage boundary condition are considered as the boundary conditions. The simulated results are compared with the measured data which were obtained by NEDECO at hadan site on 1981.2.19. and by Dong-A university at one station in the study area on 1993.4.3. and show a good agreement with them. The construction of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage may affect to reduce the current near Jinudo an Daemadeung and the suspended sediment inflowed from the upstream in the wet season seems to be transported to the Dadae.

  • After the artificial barrage was constructed in 1990s, the Geumgang estuary has been experiencing considerable changes in nature as well as in socioeconomic and culture in the vicinity villages. In order to understand how the change of estuarine environment bring about conflicts among the local communities, and resolve the conflicts, the research investigated the causes of the conflicts in the Geumgang estuary using in-depth and semi-structured interview method. 100 local people who have lived in the vicinity of Geumgang estuary for more than 30 years were selected for the interviews. Results of the research shows that local people's jobs determine the opinions about the estuary barrage and the way of estuarine management. Understanding environmental change and local conflicts helps to develop a sustainable and integrated estuary management system in the region.
