A Experimental Study on the Effect of Evening primrose on Hyperlipidemia (월견초(月見草)가 고지혈증(高脂血症)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • In order to study the anti-hyperlipidemic effects of Evening primrose, the changes of body weight, serum total cholesterol, serum HDL-cholesterol, serum triglyceride, serum LDL-cholesterol, serum total lipid and organ weight were observed after the liquid extracts of Single-dosage Evening primrose and Double-dosage Evening primrose were administered p.o to the hypercholestemic and hypertriglyceremic rats induced by 1% cholesterol diet during 10, 20, 30 days. The result were summarized as follows ; 1. The contents of body weight compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group during 10, 30 days and in double-dosage Evening primrose group did not show significant value. 2. The contents of serum total cholesterol with control group tend to be decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group, but did not show significant value. Double-dosage Evening primrose group showed significant value during 20, 30 days. 3. The contents of serum HDL-cholesterol compared with control group was significantly increased in single-dosage Evening primrose group during 10, 20, 30 days. Double-dosage Evening primrose group showed significantly value during 30 days. 4. The contents of serum triglyceride compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group during 10, 30 days. Double-dosage Evening primrose group showed significant value during 20 days. 5. The contents of serum LDL-cholesterol compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group during 10 days. Double-dosage Evening primrose group showed significant value during 10, 20, 30 days. 6. The contents of serum total lipid compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group during 20 days. Double-dosage Evening primrose group showed significant value during 20, 30 days. 7. The contents of liver weight compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group and double-dosage Evening primrose group. The contents of kidney weight compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group. The contents of spleen weight compared with control group was significantly decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group and double-dosage Evening primrose group. The contents of testis weight compared with control group tend to decreased in single-dosage Evening primrose group and double-dosage Evening primrose group, put did not show a significant value. From the above results, it was thought that Evening primrose could be applied effectively to the Hyperlipidemia.

Effects of feeding evening primrose oil and hemp seed oil on the deposition of gamma fatty acid in eggs (삼씨유와 달맞이유의 급여가 계란 내 감마지방산 축적에 미치는 영향)

  • Hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil were incorporated into the diets of laying hens for 5 weeks and the level of gamma fatty acid in the eggs that the treated hens laid was then evaluated. Hens were fed corn-soybean based diets that contained 5% tallow, 5% corn oil (CO), 5% hemp seed oil (HSO), or 5% evening primrose oil (EPO). The hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil influenced the amount of gamma linolenic acid found in the eggs through blood. The level of gamma linolenic acid in the plasma was significantly higher in hens that received the HSO and EPO diets than in those that received the tallow and CO diets. The HSO and EPO diets led to a 1.09% and 4.87% increase in egg gamma linolenic acids, respectively, when compared with eggs produced by hens treated with tallow and CO. Taken together, these data demonstrate that healthy eggs with increased gamma linolenic acids can be generated by minor diet modifications when hemp seed oil or evening primrose oil is included in the hen diet.

Morphologic Study of Effects of Prostaglandin E2 and Evening Primrose Oil on Early Orthodontic Tooth Movement in Rats (백서의 구치 이동 초기에 Prostaglandin E2와 Evening Primrose Oil의 영향에 관한 형태학적 연구)

  • To study the effect of prostglandin $E_2$ and evening primrose oil on orthodontic tooth movement in rats, one hundred and sixty rats were divided into four groups of 40 rats each. One group, injected with saline on the palate subperiosteally, served as a control group. A second and third group were injected subperiosteally on the palate with $PGE_2$ $10{\mu}g$ and evening primrose oil 10mg respectively. The fourth group was given indomethacin $20{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ orally by water bottle. The maxillary first molar was moved mesially from the incisors using a 50gm force rubber band. In each group at the 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7th day, 4 rats were examined by light microscope, and 4 by electron microscope. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Osteoclastic activity was maximum at the 3rd day in the $PGE_2$ group on the interradicular alveolar bone of the first molar, followed by the evening primrose oil group, control group, and indomethacin group. 2. Root resorption and vacuolar changes were maximum in the $PGE_2$ group. 3. At the 3rd day of the $PGE_2$ group, the osteoclasts showed well developed ruffled borders and clear zones. At the same day, the evening primrose oil group also showed well developed ruffled borders and clear zones, but less than the $PGE_2$ group. 4. At the 3rd and 5th day of the $PGE_2$ group, fibroblasts showed phagocytized fragmented collagen fibers in the cytoplasm. At the 7th day of the $PGE_2$ group, fibroblasts showed collagen fibers forming at the cell membrane surface.

Natural Dyeing with Evening Primrose (달맞이꽃을 이용한 천연염색)

  • This study examines the effects of Evening primrose on colors, color fastness, and the antimicrobial activity of dyed fabrics. The results are as follows. The dyeing conditions of Evening primrose on cotton and mercerized cotton were optimized at $50^{\circ}C$, 60 minutes, and 200% (o.w.f.). In addition, Evening primrose dyeing on silk was determined at $90^{\circ}C$, 60 minutes and 200% (o.w.f.). The pre-mordant concentration of chemicals of cotton, mercerized cotton and silk was optimized at 1% (o.w.f.). The post-mordant concentration on mercerized cotton, silk and cotton was determined at 1% (o.w.f.) and 3% (o.w.f.), respectively. The mordant methods (such as pre-mordant and post-mordant) were slightly affected on the hue of dye-fabrics. Wet cleaning fastness of cotton was improved by post-mordant; otherwise, the wet cleaning fastness of mercerized cotton and silk was improved by a pre-mordant. The dry cleaning fastness of cotton and silk was excellent regardless of mordant methods. The dry cleaning fastness of mercerized cotton was improved by a post-mordant compared to a pre-mordant. The antimicrobial activity of Evening primrose-dyed fabrics was shown at 99.9%. The excellent antimicrobial activity of dyed fabrics remained after the mordant as well as wet and dry cleaning.

Effects of the Feeds Mixed with Various Level of Lard , Perilla Oil and Evening Primrose Oil on Fatty Acid Compositions of Liver and Brain Tissue in Rats (돈지, 들깨유 및 달맞이꽃 종자유의 혼합급이가 흰쥐의 간장 및 뇌조직의 지방산 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to observe the effects of the fees mixed with the lard and two vegetable seed oils on the fatty acid compositions of liver and brain tissue, the oils mixed with 2.5% lard and various levels of perilla oil and evening primrose oil were administered to the male rats of the Sprague-Dawley for 4 weeks . In the fatty acid composition of liver lipid, saturated fatty acid (SFA) contents were rich in the phopholiipide and cholesteryl ester fraction. Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) contents were rich in the triglyceride fraction and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents were rich in the phospholipid fraction. In the fatty acid composition of liver lipid fractions, according as the contents of mixed perilla oil decreased and the contents of mixed evening primrose oil increased , n -3 PUFA contents tended to decrease and n-6 PUFA contents tended to increase. Fatty acid composition of liver lipid fractions were influenced from the fatty acid composition of the test lipids. In the fatty acid composition of brain phospholipd, PUFA contents (40%) were rich and according as the contents of mixed evening primrose oil increased, the ratio on n-3/n-6 PUFA and eicosapentaenoid acid (EPA) /arachidonic acid (AA) tended to slightly decrease.

A Study on the Statistical Method for the Target Component of a Glucose-lowering Functional Material in Extracts of Evening Primerose Seeds (혈당상승억제 기능성 소재인 달맞이꽃종자 추출물의 지표물질 분석법의 통계적 검증에 대한 연구)

  • Background: The use of the extracts from evening primrose seeds as a health functional food has been gradually increased. Therefore, the monitoring and screening process has been considerably required for its quality control. Objective: This study aimed to estimate the measurement uncertainty associated with determination of penta-o-galloyl ${\beta}$-D-glucose (PGG) in extracts from evening primrose seeds by high-performance liquid chromatography. Methods: The sources of measurement uncertainty was expressed in accordance with mathematical/statistical theories of GUM & EURACHEM Guide. The expanded uncertainty was calculated by using the relative standard uncertainty between analytical result and sources of uncertainty in measurement (sample weight, final volume, extraction volume, standard solution, matrix and instrument etc). Results: In the results of 95% confidence interval, the uncertainty in measurement was $10,253.34{\pm}1,844.50{\mu}g/kg$ (k = 2.0). Conclusion: In this study, it showed that the value of uncertainty in measurement for determination of PGG in extracts from evening primrose seeds by HPLC has about 18.0% influence on PGG contents of the analytical results. The results would be very useful for the monitoring and screening of evening primrose seeds marketed in Korea for its quality control as dietary supplement.

  • Headspace hanging drop liquid phase micro-extraction (HS-HD-LPME) is studied as a novel solvent-based sample pretreatment method for floral volatile aroma compounds. This paper reports on application of the HSHD- LPME combined with GC-MS for the analysis of linalool component emitted from evening primrose flowers. The effect of several variables on the method performance was investigated. Additionally, the separation of enantiomers on a cyclodextrin capillary column was performed to identify chirality of (−)-linalool component. Since the unsurpassed volume of a few micro-liters of solvent is used, there is minimal waste or exposure to toxic organic solvents. This method enables to combine extraction, enrichment, clean-up, and sample introduction into a single step prior to the chromatographic process.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the contents of dietary fiber (DF), compositions of fatty acids in lipid fraction and amino acids in salt-soluble protein from the functional food source such as Platycodi radix, perilla seed, evening primrose seed and aloe vera. The contents of dietary fiber, neutral detergent fiber (N.D.F) , acid detergent fiber( A.D.F) . kignin, hemicellulose an dcellulose in evening primorse seed were higher than those of other samples, except the content of cellulose .The ration of polyunsaturated /saturated (P/S) fatty acid in total lipids was 6.31 in perilla seed, which was higher than those of other samples. The content of linolenic acid (n-3) in perilla seed was 55.47%. The content of linoleic acid (n-6) in evening primrose seed was 71.88% , which was higher than those of other samples. The fatty acid composition in neutral lipids were the same as those of total lipids. The PUFA contents of fatty acid in glycolipids were 61.76% in perilla seed. And also, the ratio of n-6/n-3 in evening primrose seed was 15.19. The fatty acid compositions in phospholipids were the sameas those of glycolipids. The contents of PUFA in Platycodi radix were 62.96% . The essential amino acid contents of salt-soluble protein were 47 mole % in Platycodi radix , which was slightly higher than those other samples. The ration of essential amino acid /nonessential amino acid (E/N) was 0.9 and 0.66 in Platycodi radix and aloe vera, respectively.

In the fatty acid compositions of serum lipid and serum lipoprotein fractions, as the content so f mixed perilla oil decreased and the contents of mixed evening primrose oil increased, n -3 PUFa (polyunsaturated fatty acid) contents and ratio of EPA/AA (eicisapentaenoiidacid/arachidonic acid) tended to decrease, but n-6 PUFA contents and ratio of AA/PUFA tended to increase. Fatty acid compositions of serum lipid and serum lipoprotein fractions were influenced from the fatty acid composition of the test lipids.

Effect of Supplementing the Diet of Male Chickens With Oils Rich in n-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on the Fatty Acid Profiles of the Testis and Liver

  • Since the n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid, docosatetraenoic acid (22:4n-6), is a major functional constituent of avian spermatozoa, the effects of two dietary oils rich in fatty acids which are metabolic precursors of 22:4n-6 on the fatty acid profiles of testicular lipids were investigated during a 39 week period of supplementation from 21 to 60 weeks of age. The effects on liver lipids were determined for comparison. Dietary supplementation of male chickens with Arasco Oil, which provides a large amount of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), increased the proportion of 20:4n-6 in liver phospholipid by almost 2.5-fold. Although liver phospholipid normally contains very little 22:4n-6, this proportion was significantly increased as a result of Arasco feeding, indicating that the conversion of 20:4n-6 to 22:4n-6 was occurring. The phospholipid of the testis contains much higher proportions of 20:4n-6 and particularly of 22:4n-6 than the liver; supplementation with Arasco Oil significantly increased the proportions of both these polyunsaturates in testis phospholipid but the magnitude of this effect was much lower than that which occurred in the liver. Dietary supplementation with Evening Primrose Oil which contains ${\gamma}-linolenic $ acid (18:3n-6) resulted in significant increases in the proportions of 20:4n-6 and 22:4n-6 in liver phospholipid, although the extent of this increase was less than that produced by the Arasco Oil. By contrast, the feeding of Evening Primrose Oil did not alter the fatty acid composition of phospholipid in the testis. The findings raise the possibility that dietary supplementation with Arasco Oil may modulate the fatty acid profile of avian spermatozoa in a way which could potentially be beneficial for fertility. Moreover, the weights of the testes were almost doubled as a result of supplementation with Arasco Oil or Evening Primrose Oil.
