  • The composites of expanded graphite oxide and magnetic nanoparticle (Ni and Co) were synthesized by using simple chemical method. From the raw material natural graphite, the expanded graphite was fabricated using sulfuric acid and $1^{st}$ heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The expanded graphite was changed to expanded graphite oxide by 2nd heat treatment at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 15 sec and chemical oxidation. The expanded graphite oxide/1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution reacts with the magnetic nanoparticle to form a magnetic graphite oxide composite. These graphite-based materials were characterized by x-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and vibration sample magnetometer. We expect that these results of this paper were become basis research of graphite oxide composite.

  • Expanded graphite (EG)/Ag nanoparticle composites were synthesized by the chemical reduction of Ag ions, followed by the addition of expanded graphite into an Ag reducing solution. The prepared composites showed uniform dispersion of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of expanded graphite and exhibited relatively higher thermal conductivities than those of pure expanded graphite. In the case of 10% Ag content in the composite, the thermal conductivity in the thickness direction was 78% higher than the pure expanded graphite. We suggest that EG/Ag nanoparticle composites are a strong candidate for advanced heat spreading material.

  • Now, the world is increasingly anxious about fine dust due to abnormal temperatures caused by global warming and increased yellow dust caused by desertification, and the World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that more than 99% of the world's population is exposed to fine dust. In this situation, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide of the matrix was tested by using expanded graphite, an eco-friendly and porous material, to improve air quality. As a result of the test, since expanded graphite is a material that expands between layers compared to conventional graphite, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide decreases as the replacement rate of expanded graphite increases.

  • Epoxy/graphite/expanded graphite composites have been prepared in various weight ratios and thermal degradation and electrical properties were estimated in order to use for the bipolar plate materials in PEMFC. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the epoxy/graphite system cured by a curing agent GX-533 was most proper because its weight loss until $80^{\circ}C$ at which PEMFC would be operated was 0.3 wt%, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed its cure temperature would be sufficient at $80^{\circ}C$. The activation energy for the cure reaction was 132.0 kJ/mol and the pre-exponential factor was $1.76{\times}10^{17}min^{-1}$. Electrical conductivity on the surface of the bipolar plate prepared under a pressure of 200 $kgf/cm^2$ was increased from 4 to 25 $S/cm^2$ by increasing expanded graphite (EG) content from 50 phr to 90 phr. The percolation threshold was initiated around 75 phr and the corrosion rate at 80 phr was 1.903 $uA/cm^2$.

  • Expanded graphites were used as anode materials of high power Li-ion secondary battery. The expanded graphite was prepared by mixing the graphite with $HClO_4$ as a intercalation agents and $KMnO_4$ as a oxidizing agents. The physical and electrochemical properties of prepared expanded graphites through the variation of process variables such as contents of intercalation agent and oxidizing agent, and heat treatment temperature were analyzed for determination of optimal conditions as the anode of high power Li-ion secondary battery. After examing the electrochemical properties of expanded graphites at the different preparing conditions, the optimal conditions of expanded graphite were selected as 8 wt.% of oxidizing agent, 400 g of intercalation agent for 20 g of natural graphite, and heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$. The sample showed the improved charge/discharge characteristics such as 432 mAh/g of initial reversible capacity, 88% of discharge rate capability at 10 C-rate, and 24 mAh/g of charge capacity at 10 C-rate. However, the expanded graphite had the problems of potential plateaus like natural graphite and lower initial efficiency than the natural graphite.

  • Thermostable property is one of most important characteristics of graphite. Commercial graphites sheet from expanded graphite is using for high-temperature elements. Nowadays the new plant with high performance is developed in field of chemical industries, so the need of graphites is increasing rapidly. In this paper, the thermostable properties of newly developed graphite products with high density is investigated. I introduced the graphite material which developed for these heat tests by NGF method in order to test thermostable properties by comparing to the results of the commercial graphite sheet from expanded graphite in same condition. Through measuring the weight reducing ratio with various specimens in some conditions, I investigated the thermostable characteristics of these materials. It is verified that the graphite products by NGF method has almost same or superior thermostable properties comparing with that of commercial graphite sheet. Also the graphite products by NGF method have possibility of being better in thermostable properties.

  • MCM-41(Mobil's Composition of Matter-41) and expanded graphite(EG) were investigated as potential adsorbents for heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) in various aqueous chemistries. MCM-41 showed shorter equilibrium times and higher adsorption capacities for all three heavy metal ions compared to expanded graphite. The adsorption of three heavy metal ions was significantly affected by the solution pH due to the competition with $H_{3}O^{+}$ at lower pH and precipitation at neutral or higher pH. Adsorptions of heavy metal ions onto MCM-41 and expanded graphite were successfully described with the pseudo-second-order model. During the competitive adsorption of three heavy metal ions, the selectivity of Pb(II) was highest and almost same selectivity was observed with Cu(II) and Ni(II) when MCM-41 was used as an adsorbent, while the expanded graphite exhibited the highest selectivity to Pb(II), followed by Ni(II) and Cu(II).

  • The bipolar plate is the most important and most costly component of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The development of a suitable low density bipolar plate is scientifically and technically challenging due to the need to maintain high electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. Here, bipolar plates were developed from different particle sizes of natural and expanded graphite with phenolic resin as a polymeric matrix. It was observed that the particle size of the reinforcement significantly influences the mechanical and electrical properties of a composite bipolar plate. The composite bipolar plate based on expanded graphite gives the desired mechanical and electrical properties as per the US Department of Energy target, with a bulk density of 1.55 $g.cm^{-3}$ as compared to that of ~1.87 $g.cm^{-3}$ for a composite plate based on natural graphite (NG). Although the bulk density of the expanded-graphite-based composite plate is ~20% less than that of the NG-based plate, the I-V performance of the expanded graphite plate is superior to that of the NG plate as a consequence of the higher conductivity. The expanded graphite plate can thus be used as an electromagnetic interference shielding material.

  • Al/expanded graphite was successfully synthesized through a facile method including ultrasonic and heat treatment. In the well-designed three dimensional structure, expanded graphite(EG) works as a conductive matrix to support coated Al particles. The effects of the fabrication parameters on the microstructures and thermal conductivities of these composites were investigated. As a result, it was found that composites with graphite volume fraction of 17.4-69.4 % sintered at $600^{\circ}C$/45MPa exhibit in-plane thermal conductivities of 380-940 W/mK, over 90 % of the predictions by rule of mixture. According to the non-destructive analysis results, the synergistic enhancement was caused by the formation of efficient thermally conductive pathways due to the hybrid of the differently sized EG. The structure integrates the advantages of expanded graphite as a conductive support, preserving the electrode activity and integrity and improving the electrochemical performance.

Nowadays the need of graphite product is increasing rapidly because of its advantages. In this paper, the mechanical property of newly developed graphite products with high density is investigated with especially in compression test.
