  • The objective of this paper is to present a equation which can give some insight of the behavior of droplet in a fire plume. The equation is derived with a number of engineering relations drawn from the literature for calculating properties of fire plume. Plume properties considered here include temperatures, velocities and virtual origin. In addition, the drag force for a sphere and the energy equation are considered.

  • This experiment is to understand a characteristics of smoke layer formation affected periodicity of fire plumes. The ON-OFF jet was used to constitute the oscillating flow, which was formed by a mixture of nitrogen gas with kerosene particles. The instantaneous images was obtained by digital video camera using laser sheet technique. The results were confirmed that the smoke layer in the near fire source comprise vortices which are formed by impingement from the periodicity of fire plume. The periodic impinging of plumes were thickened the smoke layer and produced the back-flow.

  • A study is made of thermal plume flow model for the development of helicopter simulator over the forest fire. For numerical analysis, the Boussinesq fluid approximation and line fire model, which is assumed by the shape of forest fire spreading, are adopted. Comparing 3-D full numerical solutions with 2-D similarity solution, it has been built a new model that is capable of temperature prediction along the symmetric vertical axis in both cases of laminar and turbulent flows.

  • This study identified the effects of flame on the upper by fire plume ejected. we implemented model experiment according to investigation of housing area effect, window aspect ratio and balcony availability. we confirmed that opening ratio was increased according to housing area larger. the square window confirmed that is progressing fire plume ejected of free space. According to the value of an opening aspect ratio 'n' getting higher, the horizontal widow is getting that increased the risk as the fire spread an external to the top of opening. it is determined to the fundamental solution about fire safety in the extended balcony of apartment.

  • In the event of a fire on the outer walls of an architectural structure, through real scale experiments with the purpose of estimating the Flame Trajectory, the behavior and risks of expanded combustion to an upper architectural compartment of the Fire Plume Ejected from an Opening according to changes in the aspect ratio of the opening were examined. The results showed that the more the heat release rate of the fire source increased, the heat capacity of the Fire Plume Ejected from the Opening also increased, and for the case of heptane when compared with methanol or ethanol, the results showed a trend for a significant amount of unburned gas to remain. The results also showed that the larger the aspect ratio was, the more likely it was for the Flame Trajectory to approach the outer walls and rise up. In each of the experiment conditions, as the flame rose from the lower part of the wall to the upper part of the wall, a steady decrease was shown for the temperature distribution. Also by quantitatively analyzing the amount of unburned gas that remained, a method to estimate the temperature of the Fire Plume Ejected from an Opening for a traverse opening was implemented.

  • A study is made of thermal plume flow model for the development of helicopter simulator over the forest fire. For the numerical analysis, a line fire model with Boussinesq fluid approximation, which is idealized by the spreading shape of forest fire on the ground, is adopted. Comparing full 2-D and 3-D numerical solutions with 2-D similarity solution, it has been built a new model that is useful for temperature prediction along the symmetric vertical axis of fire model for both cases of laminar and turbulent flow.

  • The behavior of fire plumes has not yet been clearly identified for cases where sidewalls are installed near an opening in an unconfined space. In this research, we aim to quantitatively identify the effects on fire spread when sidewalls are located on both sides of an opening. Specifically, we focus on the effects on the fire plume of the relation between the location of sidewalls and the opening, and carry out a scale-model experiment to devise a flame height model and to evaluate the temperature distribution along the central axis of the flame.

  • In smoke control systems the amount of air supply is almost the same as that of smoke exhaust. This study analyzed the effect of supply air velocity on the smoke exhaust behavior using FDS tool. The results showed that fire plume can be disheveled by the rapid air velocities developed when the air supply inlet is located near the fire plume. Disheveled smoke caused the rapid descent of smoke layer level and the reduced visibility. To increase the efficiency of smoke exhaust systems supply air inlet should be located sufficiently far from the location of the fire plume.

  • To analyze the effect of fire plume on the characteristics of air flow and $CO_2$, extinguishant transfer when extinguishant is injected into a closed space similar to a marine engine room with fire plume, a numerical simulation on a space was performed. Flow fields and $CO_2$, concentration fields are calculated according with the variation of the location of nozzles. In all cases excepting the case of all nozzles located in the right side of ceiling, an counterclockwise & clockwise recirculation flow was found in the region of the right and left side of the nozzle on the second floor and such a recirculation flow greatly affected mass transfer and the diffusion process of $CO_2$, extinguishant. In the region of the first floor with fire plume, the diffusion process of $CO_2$, extinguishant was in agreement with the extension process of recirculation flow. It is considered that the result of this study can be useful to designing the arrangement of nozzles for the $CO_2$ fire fighting equipments in a marine engine room.
