Spacing Method Suitable for Flexible Cholesteric LCDs

  • In order to find out LC cell spacing method suitable for flexible cholesteric LCDs with high mechanical stability, we carried out bending and mechanical shock tests by using various spacing techniques: bead spacer, photo spacer, polymer wall with bead spacer and polymer wall with photo spacer. As a result, it was found that the spacing method using polymer wall incorporated with photo spacer is the best for flexible cholesteric LCDs in terms of mechanical stability. The investigation is discussed in detail.

  • Thermotropic behavior was observed in a number of aromatic copoly (ester amide)s containing a flexible spacer based on 4,4'$-dicarboxyalpha,\varpi-diphenoxy$ alkanes as an A component, di-acetylated p-aminophenol as a B, di-acetylated hydroquinone as a C gave the thermotropic copoly (ester amide)s containing a flexible spacer in the polymer backbone. 4,4'-diamino-3,3'-dimethoxybiphenyl as an amino group containing monomer as a D components. In the last case, up to 60 mol% of amide group was allowed to afford thermotropic liquid-crystallinity. The polymer structure and thermotropic nature were examined by solid-state and solution $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter, polarizing microscopy, and IR spectroscopy.

The Investigation of flexible flat display in improving flexibility

  • In this study, it was mainly focused on the mechanism and reliability performances of PI/PET composites after many times of curving. We developed a new process of spacer for flexible display to improve the maintenance of cell gap. This new process used the laser carving technology, which is widely applied on printing press, to produce the pattern of spacers and shaped both of the alignment film and spacers simultaneously by press of pattern. Assembling the spacer-shaped film and plastic substrates together well and it shows an excellent performance on the maintenance of cell gap and reliability of curving.

Structure Design of Fall Impact Protection Pad Using 3D Printing Technology and Comparison of Characteristics According to Filament Material (3D 프린팅 기술을 활용한 낙상충격 보호패드 구조설계 및 필라멘트 소재에 따른 특성 비교)

  • This study uses 3D printing technology to design and fabricate a fall impact protection pad with a spacer fabric structure. The design of the pads consists of hexagonal three-dimensional units connected in a honey-comb shape; in addition, the unit consists of a surface layer and a spacer layer. Protect pads were designed as either a hexagonal type or diamond type according to the surface layer structure; subsequently, a spacer filament was also designed as the most basic I-shape type. Designed pads were printed using four types of flexible filaments to select suitable material for a fall impact protection pad. Impact protection performance and bending stiffness were evaluated for the eight type of pad outputs. As a result of the impact protection performance evaluation, when the force of 6,500N was applied, the force passed through the pad was in the range of 1,370-2,132N. FlexSolid$^{(R)}$ and Skinflex$^{TM}$ showed good protection performance and cubicon flexible filament showed the lowest protection. NinjaFlex$^{(R)}$ was found to be the most flexible in the bending stiffness evaluation.

  • Synthesis and liquid-crystallinites of thermotropic polyamides and copolyamides were investigated. Thermotropic polyamides and copolyamides containing a flexible spacer in the backbone were obtained by the two or three components melt polycondensations of 4,4'-dicarboxy-${\alpha}$${\omega}$-diphenoxy alkane as an A components, 4,4'-diacetoamido-3,3' dimethoxybiphenyl as a B, 1,4-diacetoamido-benzene (diacetylated p-phenylenediamine) was used as another amide-group-forming minomer. The content of the amide groups in the thermotropic polyamide and Copolyamide widely varied depending on the structure of the amide-group forming diacetoamido monomers. A polymer (9CLDI) showed a typical nematic texture between 218$^{circle}C$ ($T_m$) and 345$^{circle}C$($T_i$) The melting points of the members of this series of polymers increased with decreasing methylene spacer. The polymer structure and mesmorphic nature were examined by solid and solution ${^13}C$-NMR spectroscopy, cross polarizing microscopy with a hot stage.

  • A series of compounds that contain varying numbers of the same mesogenic structure, biphenyl p-oxybenzoate unit, attached through a pentamethylene spacer to the central benzene ring were prepared and their liquid crystallinity was studied. The mesophase-forming ability of a dimesogenic compound was found to be greatly dependent on whether or not its geometric shape is linear and also on the existence of the pentamethylene spacer between the mesogen and the central core. The presence of the spacer enhanced the capacity of a compound to form a mesophase. In the trimesogenic compound the mesogens were linked to the 1,3,5-positions of the core benzene ring through the spacer. The compound was found to be enantiotropically nematic.

The three components melt polycondensation of 4,4'-dicarboxy-$\alpha$, $\omega$-diphenoxyalkane as an A component, 4-4'diacetoxybiphenyl as a B, and p-N-acetoxy-aminobenzoic acid as a C gave the thrmotropic copoly(ester amide)s containing a flexible splacer in the polymer backbone. Diacetylated hydroquinone, methyl hydroquinone, chlorohydroquinone, and phenyl hydroquinone were used as anther B components. A polymer(6BPAB) having 10 mol% of C component and hexamethylene space. showed a typical nematic texture between $245^{\circ}C(T_m)\; and\; more\; than\; 360^{\circ]C(T_i)$. The melting points of the members of this series of polymers increased with decreasing methylene spacer. The polymer structure and mesomorphic nature were examined by solid and solution ^{13}C-NMR4 spectroscopy, cross polarizing microscopy with a hot stage, and X-ray diffactometry.

Comparisons of Thermal-moisture Properties in Combination of 3D spacer and Polyurethane(PU) Foam for Mold Brassiere Cups (몰드 브래지어 컵의 제작을 위한 3D 스페이서 패브릭과 폴리우레탄(PU) 폼 조합에 따른 열·수분 전달 특성 비교)

  • To identify optimized thermal properties of mold brassiere cup for improved thermal comfort during summer, we compared the thermal resistance and the water vapor permeability of Polyurethane (PU) foam, 3D spacer fabric and the two combined materials of the PU foam and the 3D spacer fabric. Four experimental mold brassieres were made of the materials for wearing test. Six women in their twenties evaluated the wearing sensation in the hot and humid environment. The changes in microclimate temperature and humidity while wearing test brassiere cups were measured. Results indicate that thermal resistance increased as more PU foam were combined, while the water vapor permeability was higher as the content of the 3D spacer fabric increased at thickness of 18mm and over. However, in the wear test, the PU foam brassiere was the most preferred in all ambient conditions due to its soft, flexible and smooth texture, despite its high thermal resistance and low water vapor permeability. This indicates that the textures of mold foams are more dominant properties than thermal properties for mold foams in determining the wear comfort of mold brassieres.
