  • Theory of Earth's free oscillation is revisited. Firstly, we summarized the underlying formulations, such as the equation of motion and its conversion into numerically integrable form and then explained computational procedures including the treatment of inner core-outer core boundary and core-mantle boundary, while the latter information has not been explicitly given in most publications. Secondly, we re-calculated the periods of Earth's free oscillation modes (period >200 s) for PREM model. In doing so we acquired the values of modes missing in Dziewonski and Anderson (1981). As a case observation, one seismogram after 2011 Tohoku earthquake recorded at Daejeon, Korea (KIGAM seismic station) was briefly analyzed to identify free oscillation mode excitations on its spectra. The material in this article will be most clear guide for those on calculating the Earth's free oscillation mode.

  • A free oscillation technique for obtaining the dynamic stability derivatives in yaw is applied to the pure yawing motion. The procedure of wind tunnel testing is to compute the derivatives after measuring deflecting angles of the model during the free oscillating motion. The charging compressed air is supplied for the initial excitation. The results of this experiment predicted feasible characteristics of the yawing motion, comparing with the data previously reported in the literature.

  • Any mechanical system has a natural oscillation which can be excited, and the earth is no exception. The earth can oscillate in an indefinite number of normal modes of oscillation, rather like a giant bell. The various free modes are generally sparated into two categoridal modes and toroidal modes. Clearly the toroidal modes will produce no perturvation of the gravity field and no vertical acceleration on the surface of the earth. Hence only spheroidal modes can be detected with a gravimeter. EarthTide gravimeter was installed at AIMST in order to observe free modes of the earth. Eight major earthquakes including chinese earthquake (magnitude 7.3) with free oscillations of the earth are observed during one year (1998. 8. 1∼1999.7.31). And then the earth tides components were eilminated from earthquake records using a numerical Butterworth highpass filter. Spectral analysis of gravity readings repersent that 48 observations of shheroidal modes. The relationships between instrumental observations and theoretical predictions based on the Gutenberg earth model agree well those resulting from free oscillation in Korea.

  • In this study, to find the effect of nonequilibrium condensation on the oscillation of the terminating shock wave in transonic flows, an NACA0014 airfoil flow with nonequilibrium condensation is analyzed using the total variation diminishing (TVD) numerical scheme. Transonic free stream Mach numbers of 0.81-0.87 are tested with variations in the stagnation relative humidity. For the same free stream Mach number and attack angle of ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$, an increase in the stagnation relative humidity attenuates the strength of the terminating shock and reduces the oscillation of the terminating shock wave. Furthermore, for the same stagnation relative humidity, the larger the free stream Mach number becomes, the shorter the period of the oscillation shock wave is. The excursion distance of the oscillation shock increases with the free stream Mach numbers for the same stagnation relative humidity. Finally, it is found that for the same shock location, the strength of the oscillating shock facing upstream is stronger than that facing downstream.

  • Integrated finite difference method (IFDM) is used to solve one dimensional free oscillation problem in the coastal area. To evaluate the solution accuracy of IFDM in free oscillation analysis, two finite difference equations based on area discretization method and point discretization method are derived from the governing equations of free oscillation, respectively. The difference equations are transformed into a generalized eigenvalue problem, respectively. A numerical example is presented, for which the analytical solution is available, for comparing IFDM to conventional finite difference equation (CFDM), qualitatively. The eigenvalue matrices are solved by sub-space iteration method. The numerical results of the two methods are in good agreement with analytical ones, however, IFDM yields better solution than CFDM in lower modes because IFDM only includes first order differential operator in finite difference equation by Green's theorem. From these results, it is concluded that IFDM is useful for the free oscillation analysis in the coastal area.

  • A numerical prediction method has been proposed to predict non-linear free surface oscillation in a three-dimensional container. The fluid motions are numerically predicted with Navier-Stokes equations discretized in a Lagrangian scheme with sufficient numerical accuracy. The profile of a free surface is precisely represented with three-dimensional body-fitted coordinates (BFC), which are regenerated in each computational step on the basis of the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. In order to confirm the reliability of the computational method, it was firstly applied to three-dimensional flows within complicated-shaped rigid boundaries, such as curved pipes and ducts. Than it was applied to benchmark computations related to free surface oscillations. Following these basic verifications, non-linear sloshings in a cylindrical tank and transitions from sloshing to swirling motions were numerically predicted. Throughout these computations, the applicability of the present computational method has been confirmed and some of the predicted free surface motions were visualized as sequential images and animations to understand their dynamic futures.

  • This paper describes a passive safety injection system with free piston Stirling pump working withabundant decay heat in the nuclear reactor during the hypothetical accident. The water column in the tube assembly connected from the hot chamber to the cold chamber in the pump oscillates periodically due to thermal volume changes of non-condensable gas in each chamber. The oscillating pressure in the water column is converted into the pumping power with a suction-and-bleed type valve assembly. In this paper a dynamic model describing the frequency of oscillation and pumping pressure is developed. It was found that the pumping pressure is a function of the temperature difference between the chambers. Also, the frequency oscillation depends on the length of the tube with water column.

  • For the numerical analysis of free oscillation characteristics in a harbor with general boundary and bottom topography, finite element method is applied. The governing Helmholtz equation is transformed into a generalized matrix eigenvalue problem using the standard finite element procedure. A computer code is developed for the numerical evaluation of natural frequencies and free oscillation modes. In the eigensolution process, a shifting strategy is devised for the treatment of numerical singularity. Scaling of coefficient matrix is also found to be effective for the alleviation of numerical ill-conditioning. For the test problems, firstly, analytical and numerical solutions are compared and validity of the code is obtained. Hence the method is successfully applicable for the real-world problems with general geometric boundaries and bottom topography.
