Chlorogenic Acid was Specifically Induced among Phenolic Compounds in Centipedegrass by Gamma Irradiation

  • Centipedegrass is a warm season turfgrass in the world. Chlorogenic acid (CA) is one of the important compounds present in the leaf of centipedegrass and already known as an antioxidant, CA has become a key resistance against insect pests and bacteria pathogens of agricultural and horticultural plants during seedling stage. Furthermore, CA is accumulated by abiotic stress such as an UV irradiation. In present study, we investigated enhancement of the level of CA upon gamma irradiation in centipedegrass. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) data analysis showed an approximately increasing of the CA levels from among the irradiated samples. However, plants irradiated at 50 Gy showed a constant increase in the CA level (0.0066 to $0.114mg\;ml^{-1}$ and 0.0258 to $0.2211mg\;ml^{-1}$, respectively) from $3^{rd}$ to $15^{th}$ day among one and three month irradiated plants compared to control. The present study, indicates an increase in the CA level upon gamma irradiation, suggests strategy for conferment of strong resistance in seedling stage plants by gamma irradiation as simplicity and cheaply method.

Preparation of cross-linked silk fibroin film by γ-irradiation and their application as supports for human cell culture

  • This study described about preparation of the cross-linked silk fibroin (SF) film by ${\gamma}$-irradiation of the casted SF film, which is fabricated from aqueous solution regenerated via fibers of cocoons and their application as supports for human cell culture. The properties of cross-linked SF film were evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy, contact angle, solubility to water, thermal analysis, surface area analyzer, and morphology via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cross-linked SF films were not dissolved in water and exhibited the rough surface morphology, large surface area, and good thermal properties. The human fibroblast cell (CCD-986sk) and embryo kidney-ft cell were well growed on the surface of cross-linked SF film supports prepared by ${\gamma}$-irradiation. The cross-linked SF film prepared by ${\gamma}$-irradiation can be used as biomaterials for human cell culture.

  • The electric characteristics of all the instruments and materials used in atomic field is changed due to radiation damages by the effects of radio activities. In this study, when the condenser is radiated by Gamma-ray, variations in its electric properties have been investigated. The following results are obtained. (1) The capacitance in O.F paper condenser is exponentially increased as the quantity of irradiation by Gamma-ray is increased, but polyethylene, ceramic, chemical, neostyrene, mylar condenser are decreased. and in case of more than 10$^{7}$ of irradiation it has saturated state, (2) The breakdown voltage and the .delta. in condensers except the O.F paper condenser are exponentially increased as the quantity of irradiation by Gamma-ray is increased but in case of more than 10$^{7}$ .gamma. of irradiation it has decreased.

Effects of Antioxidants on Oxidation of Lard Induced by Gamma Irradiation (감마선 조사에 의한 돈지의 산패에 산화방지제의 첨가효과)

  • The effects of antioxidants such as ascorbyl palmitate(AP), tocopherol( Toc), BHA and ascorbyl palmitate+ tocopherol(AP+ Toc) on lipid peroxide formations in lard have been investigated during storage at 50oC after gamma irradiation with the dose of 1~10kGy. Immediately gamma irradiation greatly increased the initiative oxidation of lard as expected. But antioxidants were found to be greatly effective in minimizing the radiation induced peroxidation of lard. The decreasing order of effects on their antioxidative activities was AP>AP+ Toc>BHA> Toc. Oxidation of lard during storage at 50oC after irradiation induced the acceleration of autooxidation. But the additions of an tioxidants inhibited the formation of peroxides. Their antioxidative activities during storage were BHA> AP+ Toc> Toc>AP. Especially AP+ Toc mixture was not significantly different from BHA (p>0.05).

  • In this study, it was investigated the antioxidant activity of laminarin degraded by gamma irradiation. Because the activities of antioxidants have been attributed to various mechanisms, different assay methods have been conducted and compared. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of degraded laminarin were measured and compared with non-degraded. All of these results showed that the antioxidant activity of laminarin degraded by irradiation was increased depending on the absorbed dose. Therefore, gamma irradiation could be an alternative method for the preparation of degraded laminarin with higher antioxidant activity.

  • The effects of ${\gamma}$-irradiation on the crosslinking of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated for the purpose of obtaining a suitable formulation for heat shrinkable materials. In this study the HDPE specimens were prepared by blending with cross linking agents and pressed into a 0.2 mm sheet at 18$0^{\circ}C$. ${\gamma}$-irradiation was conducted at 40 to 100 kGy in nitrogen. The heat shrinkable property and thermal mechanical property of the HDPE sheets have been investigated. It was found that the degree of crosslinking of the irradiated HDPE samples were increased with irradiation dose. Compared with the HDPE containing triallylisocyanurate, the HDPE containing trimethylol propane triacrylate shows a slight increase in crosslinking density. The heat transformation and dimension change of HDPE decreased with increasing radiation dose. The heat shrinkage of the samples increased with increasing annealing temperatures. The thermal resistance of HDPE increased upon the crosslinking of HDPE.

  • In this study. the effects of ${\gamma}$-irradiation on the crosslinking of low density poly ethylene (LLDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) containing crosslinking agents were investigated to find the degree of crosslinking in the polymer. The LDPE and LLDPE specimens were prepared by blending crosslinking agents with each polymers, and by hot-press-molding into a sheet at 13$0^{\circ}C$. The ${\gamma}$-irradiation was conducted at 50 to 150 kGy in nitrogen. The crosslinking percentage in these specimens was measured in relation to the irradiation dose and the type of crosslinking agents. The mechanical properties, thermal properties and crystallinity of specimens were examined as a function of irradiation dose as well. It was found that the degree of crosslinking of the irradiated specimens was increased with increasing irradiation dose and by the addition of crosslinking agents. The mechanical properties and thermal properties of specimens were improved in proportion to an increase in the degree of crosslinking. The crystallinity of original resin was decreased with increasing crosslinking density.

Changes of Microbiological and General Quality Characteristics of Gamma Irradiated Half-Cooked Noodle (감마선 조사 숙면의 미생물 및 일반 품질특성 변화)

  • Effect of gamma irradiation on quality properties of half·cooked noodle was studied. The noodle were treated with lactic acid(0.1%, w/w), heat(10 min in boiling water) or their combination after cooking for 3 min, and irradiated at 0, 5 and 10 kGy. The noodle were stored at 25。C for 5 weeks and microbial population, Aw, pH, and texture profiles were examined. Fungi were completely eliminated by gamma-irradiation with 5 or 10 kGy does. Number of aerobic bacteria were also decreased by 2 and 4 log cycles with dose of 5 and 10 kGy, respectively. The D10 values of aerobic bacteria were 2.34∼2.95 kGy. Growth of the aerobic bacteria that survived even at 10 kGy of irradiation were significantly inhibited during storage. Acidification of half-cooked noodle was suppressed by gamma irradiation but A${_w}$ were not affected. Stickiness was decreased at the beginning of storage by gamma irradiation but was restored after 3 weeks. The results indicated that the gamma irradiation would be useful to improve quality and storage stability of half-cooked noodle.

Efficiency of Gamma Irradiation to Inactivate Growth and Fumonisin Production of Fusarium moniliforme on Corn Grains

  • The efficiency of gamma irradiation (0, 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 kGy) as a sterilization method of corn samples (30 g) artificially contaminated with Fusarium moniliforme stored at normal condition ($25^{\circ}C$ with approximate relative humidity (RH) of 55%) and optimal condition ($25^{\circ}C$ with a controlled RH of 97%) was studied. The results showed that the fungal growth and the amount of fumonisin were decreased as the dose of gamma irradiation increased. Gamma irradiation at 1-5 kGy treatment significantly inhibited the growth of F. moniliforme by 1-2 log reduction on corn samples (P < 0.05). Sublethal effect of gamma irradiation was observed at 10-20 kGy doses after storage, and a complete inactivation required 30 kGy. Fungal growth and fumonisin production increased with higher humidity and longer storage time in all corn samples. This study also demonstrated that there was no strict correlation between fungal growth and fumonisin production. Storage at normal condition significantly resulted in lower growth and fumonisin production of F. moniliforme as compared with those stored at optimal condition (P < 0.05). Gamma irradiation with the dose of ${\geq}5$ kGy followed by storage at normal condition successfully prolonged the shelf life of irradiated corns, intended for human and animal consumptions, up to 7 weeks.

Effect of Gamma Ray on Molecular Structures of Alkali-Lignin (감마선이 알칼리 리그닌의 분자구조에 미치는 영향)

  • Lignin is one of the natural macromolecules. Every year large amount of lignin arises from the cellulose production as a by-product worldwide. The use of lignin as a precursor to carbonaceous materials has gained interest due to its low cost and high availability. Therefore, we improved the properties of alkali-lignin by exposing to gamma ray in this study. The alkali-lignin is irradiated by Gamma ray irradiation with varying doses. The char yields of alkali-lignin were investigated by increasing up to 50 kGy. The cross-linking and bond scission of alkali-lignin occur simultaneously during gamma ray irradiation. The crosslinking was predominantly accelerated by gamma ray irradiation up to 50 kGy. Bond scission predominantly occurs between 50 and 500 kGy. ESCA analysis indicated that the alcoholic carbon increase up to 50 kGy. Solution viscosity was increased as absorbed dose increased up to 20 kGy. In addition, the aromatic ring was not influenced by irradiation at doses ranging from 20 to 500 kGy as shown in FT-IR results.
