  • To investigate the microcrack healing behavior of $Si_3N_4-20wt\%SiC-8wt\%Y_2O_3$ composite ceramics(SNCY8), we observe the crack length evolution a! the time of 20, 40, 60 minutes with in-situ optical microscopy by varying healing temperature of $800\~1200^{\circ}C$. Crack healing obviously occurred as heating temperature and time increased. We proposed a simple model of effective diffusion based on the crack length evolution with healing condition, and determined the effective diffusion coefficient as Our result implies that we may predict the healing ability quantitatively with temperature and time in structural ceramics through the effective diffusion coefficient model.

  • This study investigated the thermal stability of Grubbs' catalyst and its reactivity with self-healing agents for self-healing damage repair. Four types of Grubbs' catalyst supplied by manufacturers were considered and each catalyst was tested in as-received and grinded conditions. Four types of self-healing agents were prepared by varying the mixing ratio of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and 5-ethylidene-2-norbonene (ENB). Heat flows as a function of temperature were measured through a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the thermal stability of catalysts. Reaction heats of self-healing agents with the catalyst were measured to evaluate the reactivity of the catalyst. For this evaluation, Fluka Chemika Grubbs' catalyst was used based on the maximum temperature and the time to reach the maximum temperature. According to the results, catalysts had different shapes depending on the manufacturer and the results showed that the smaller the size of the catalyst the higher the reactivity with self-healing agents. As the ENB ratio in self-healing agents increased, the maximum temperature increased, and the time to reach the maximum temperature decreased. As the amount of the catalyst increased, the maximum temperature increased, and the time to reach the maximum temperature decreased. Considering the thermal stability of the catalyst and its reactivity with the self-healing agent, combination of 0.5 wt% catalyst and the D3E1 self-healing agent was optimal for self-healing damage repair. Finally, as the thermal decomposition may occur depending on the environmental temperature, the catalyst must not be exposed to temperature higher than that is necessary to maintain the thermal stability of the catalyst.

  • Crack-healing behavior of $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics has been studied as functions of heat-treatment temperature and amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal. Results showed that optimum amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal and coating of $SiO_2$ colloidal on crack could significantly increase the bending strength. The heat-treatment temperature has a profound influence on the extent of crack healing and the degree of strength recovery. The optimum heat-treatment temperature depends on the amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal. Crack healing strength was far the better cracked specimen with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating on crack surface. After heat treatment at the temperature 1,273 K in air, the crack morphology almost entirely disappeared by scanning prob microscope. At optimum healing temperature 1,273 K, the bending strength with additive $SiO_2$ colloidal 0.0 wt.% without $SiO_2$ colloidal coating recovered to the value of the smooth specimens at room temperature for the investigated crack sizes $100\;{\mu}m$. But that with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating increase up to 140 %. The amount of optimum additive $SiO_2$ colloidal was 1.3 wt.% and crack healed bending strength with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating increase up to 160 % to smooth specimen of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal 0.0 wt.%. Crack closure and rebonding of the crack due to oxidation of cracked surfaces were suggested as a dominant healing mechanism operating in $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics.

  • Inner crack-like pores with controlled amount of Ca impurity level in the high purity alumina single crystal sapphire had been created by micro-fabrication technique which includes ion implantation photo-lithography Ar ion milling and hot press technique. The morphological change and the healing of crack-like pore in the Ca doped high purity single crystal alumina during high temperature heat treatment in vacuum were observed using optical microscopy. The hexagonal bridging ligaments were developed and the size of hexagonal bridging ligaments had been increased with temperature and Ca amount and had grown to their corner rounded. It appeared that the hexagonal bridging ligaments would have an equilbrium size with temperature and the amount of Ca addition. Three kinds of crack-like pore healing type were observed. Edge regression and ligament growth were observed from relatively low temperature in the crack-like pore. Edge regression were found in almost all of the crack-like pore but the ligament growth were found only in the several crack-like pores accelerating heating very fast. Flow type healing was observed above $1800^{\circ}C$ and It healed the crack-like pore very slowly.

  • Since the crack self-healing materials are activated according to the exposure environmental conditions from the time of crack occurrence, it is very important to clarify the relationship between the healing performance and the exposure environmental conditions of the crack surface. In this paper, the influence of the exposure environmental conditions on the crack healing performance of self-healing repair mortar was investigated through the water permeability test. The influence of temperature and humidity on the crack width of cracked specimens was evaluated. As a result of measuring the change of the crack width, the effect of curing temperature was negligible but it was confirmed that crack-closing occurred due to the change of dry-wet condition. The healing materials produced on the crack surface of the specimens was identified as calcite minerals. Since the minerals with high density are precipitated under the influence of gravity, the healing performance is somewhat different according to the direction of the crack surface, and the healing performance was significantly improved in the wet exposure condition than the air exposure condition.

  • The low kinds of $Al_2O_3$ composite ceramics were prepared using a mixture of 85 wt.% $Al_2O_3$ (mean size $0.5\;{\mu}m$), 15 wt.% SiC Powder with $Y_2O_3$, as an additive powder (0, 1, 3 and 5 wt.%). The crack-healing strengths were studied as functions of crack-healing temperature and amount of $Y_2O_3$. The in-situ crack-healing behavior was observed at 1,573 K for 1 h in the air. The heat treated specimen with 3 wt.% of $Y_2O_3$ showed better crack-healing ability than specimen with 1 or 5 wt.% of $Y_2O_3$. In case of specimen with 3 wt.% of $Y_2O_3$, the bending strength of the crack-healed specimen at 1,473 K was recovered to the bending strength of smooth specimen treated at 1573 K. The heat-resistance limit temperature of $Al_2O_3$ composite ceramics was 1,073 K, 1,373 K, 873 K for the specimen with 1, 3, 5 wt.% of $Y_2O_3$.

  • Purpose: Diabetic foot ulcers are closely related to body surface heat, which can be affected easily by temperature differences. This study examined the correlation between the healing process of diabetic wounds and abnormal diurnal temperature through an animal study. Materials and Methods: Rats in the abnormal diurnal temperature group and control group were given a 10 mm sized full-thickness skin ulcer. Wound size progression was observed in both groups. H&E and Masson's trichrome staining was performed at 14 days after wound formation, and the number of vessels per unit area and histology analysis were performed. The changes in the ulcer were measured through three dimensional cross-section area using INSIGHT® devices. Results: The wound recovery period (granulation ingrowing) was 24 days in the abnormal diurnal temperature model and 20 days in the control group. The thickness of scar tissue was 402±23.19 ㎛ in the control group and 424.5±36.94 ㎛ in the diurnal temperature model. Neovascular formation was counted as 5.1±0.97 for the control group and 4.16±0.94 for the diurnal temperature model group. Conclusion: Delayed and inferior diabetic wound healing was observed in the abnormal diurnal temperature group, which was characterized by greater diurnal variations than the typical growth environment.

  • An experimental study to find the effect of processing parameters for self-healing microcapules is performed. These microcapsules can be applied to accomplish the healing of delamination damage in woven E-glass/epoxy composites. This paper introduces the self-healing concept and presents a method for solving the microcapsule size and shape. Additionally, processing parameters are varied during the formation of microcapsules and these capsules are observed through optical microscope. To obtain thermogravimetric(TG) curve for the manufactured microcapsules, TGA tests are executed. From these results, the best processing conditions for the formation of capsules are found as follows: (1) temperature of solution $ 50^{\circ}C$, (2) potential of hytdrogen(pH) 3.5ppm, and (3) agitation 500~600rpm.

  • The paper presents experimental results of self-healing effects of OPC-GGBFS paste with cracked and uncracked specimens. The self-healing of cracked specimens is processes of crack closing with re-hydration of unhydrated in crack surface. The OPC paste with GGBFS replacement ratios of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% were prepared having a constant water-binder ratios of 0.5. The OPC-GGBFS paste specimens immersed in tap-water and sea-water. The temperature of tap and sea-water was $5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. The cracked specimens after deterioration were immersed for 60 days. The relationship between self-healing effect and age-effect was calculate based upon the experimental results. The self-healing effect was measured in ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) before and after loading. When the relative change rate of UPV is increases with the increase in GGBFS replacement ratios. Moreover, the self-healing effect is increased with the temperature of tap-water is increase. But the cracked specimens immersed in sea-water was unclear effects of different temperature. Furemore, most of the healing for OPC-GGBFS specimens immersed in tap-water and sea-water occurred during the first 30 days. The self-healing effect until 30 days is higher than that the age-effect. After 30 days, self-effect and age-effect was largely decreases. SEM/EDS analysis of crack on the surface of the specimens in tap-water were covered with aragonite, and sea-water were covered with brucite.
