Purpose: This study examined the hip and lumbopelvic movement while the hip was rotating laterally in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: Sixty healthy subjects and sixty subjects with CLBP were enrolled in this study. Myomotion (Myomotion research pro, Noraxon Inc., German) was used to measure the hip lateral rotation and the lumbopelvic movement. An independent t-test was used to compare the hip lateral rotation and lumbopelvic rotation between the groups. Results: Between healthy males and females, healthy females showed a smaller hip lateral rotation angle (HLRA) than healthy males in the hip lateral rotation test (HLRT). Between the healthy females and females with CLBP, the females with CLBP showed a smaller HLRA and greater lumbopelvic motion than the healthy females in the HLRT, and their lumbopelvic motions occurred earlier during lateral rotation of the hip. Finally, between the males and females with CLBP, the females with CLBP showed a smaller HLRA and greater lumbopelvic motion in the HLRT, and their lumbopelvic motions occurred earlier during lateral rotation of the hip. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the CLBP affected the hip lateral rotation, and the lumbopelvic movement depended on gender. In particular, compared to the other groups, the females with CLBP showed a larger lumbopelvic rotation angle and smaller hip lateral rotation angle and lumbopelvic motion occurred early during lateral rotation of the hip.
Purpose: Hip rotation testing is important in the evaluation of chronic back pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate hip and lumbopelvic movement during hip medial rotation (HMR) in individuals with chronic lower back pain (CLBP). Methods: This study targeted 112 subjects in total: 28 healthy males and 28 healthy females, and 27 males with CLBP and 29 females with CLBP. Motion-capture device was used to measure the hip medial rotation angle (HMRA), lumbopelvic rotation angle (LPRA), and the rotation angle of the hip when lumbopelvic rotation starts during hip medial rotation. Results: When evaluating the healthy males and females using the hip medial rotation test (HMRT), healthy males showed a smaller HMRA than did healthy females (p<0.05). When evaluating the healthy males and the males with CLBP using the HMRT, males with CLBP showed a smaller HMRA and more lumbopelvic movements than did healthy males (p<0.05) in addition, their lumbopelvic movements occurred earlier during HMR (p<0.05). Finally, when evaluating the males and the females with CLBP using the HMRT, males with CLBP showed a smaller HMRA and more lumbopelvic movements (p<0.05), and their lumbopelvic movements occurred earlier during HMR (p<0.05). Conclusion: The HMRT is an important test for the evaluation of males, and especially males with CLBP, as they often experience an increased LPRA and decreased HMRA, with lumbopelvic movement occurring earlier during HMR when compared to other groups.
Serum tumor marker CA15-3 is widely used in follow-up for assessment of breast cancer prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate levels among healthy females and patients, to assess differences with tumor stage and grade, and to determine the relationship with estrogen and progesterone receptor expression. One hundred and thirty six Jordanian females were enrolled in this study: Forty-five were healthy females; seventy-two were diagnosed with breast cancer and nineteen diagnosed with benign breast lesions. Elevated serum CA15-3 level was significantly observed among breast cancer patients ($37.95{\pm}6.65$) compared to both healthy ($14.97{\pm}0.8$) and benign females ($12.30{\pm}1.55$), but no significant association was detected between serum CA15-3 level and age of cancer onset, menarche age, menopause age, parity and BMI. Decreased CA15-3 level was significantly associated with hormone therapy and oral contraceptive consumption among breast cancer patients. Significantly elevated CA15-3 serum levels were found among grade II, III and stage II and III breast cancer females compared to normal healthy females. Elevated CA15-3 serum levels were also found among ER+/PR+($54.242{\pm}7.89$) and ER+/PR-($37.08{\pm}8.22$) compared to healthy control females.
The lipid composition of total serum lipids were investigated by latroscan TH-10 TLC analyzer in 69 healthy subjects and 62 patients with hypercholesterolemia. Total serum lipids level in healthy subjects was higher in females than males. There was a increase in total serum lipids level with increasing total serum cholesterol level in patients with hypercholesterolemia, regardless sex. Total serum lipids obtained from healthy subjects and patients with hypercholesterolemia were separated into phospholipids, free cholesterol, free fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol esters. Increasing the level of total serum cholesterol in the patients resulted in a decrease in the level of phospholipids, which was a major lipid fraction, indicating that HDL level in the patients was also decreased. However, cholesterol esters, triglycerides and free cholesterol levels in the patients were higher than those found in healthy subjects. The FC/CE ratio for male patients was lower than for healthy males, while in female patients, this ratio was similar to that observed in healthy females.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the repeatability of the electrical measurement of taste detection on different dates and in different sessions in healthy young females. Methods: The sites of electrical stimulation were the tip of the tongue, the posterolateral border of the tongue and the soft palate on the right side unilaterally. The measurements were repeated over three consecutive days, three sessions per day and three times for each session in seventeen healthy females. The repeatability of the measurement was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: In the dB unit, the ICC of the tip of the tongue and the soft palate was good (61.03 and 66.03, respectively); however, the lateral border of the tongue was a little lower (58.07). In the ㎂ unit, all three test sites had poor ICC. Variability was more significantly associated with the subject factor than with other factors such as trials, sessions and days in dB and ㎂ units. Conclusions: Electrogustometry, which measures electrical taste detection thresholds in the dB unit, is repeatable and acceptable for clinical use in assessing taste function in healthy young females.
This study aims to suggest the partition ratio (Q-factor) of healthy Koreans and the comparison results of breath alcohol concentration (BAC) measurements using two methods (photoacoustic and electrochemical methods) for developing breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIIDs). Given the relationship between BACs and BrACs and the Q-factor, the alcohol metabolism of healthy Koreans (96 males and 91 females) is revealed for understanding the digestion of alcohol and surveying the fundamental data of alcohol-related problems, CO2 concentrations vs. alcohol concentrations, and the performance of alcohol sensors in the marketplace. The average Q-factor of healthy Korean males and females are 1,913 (95% confidence interval from 1,889-1,937) and 1,991 (95% confidence interval from 1,945-2,036). Photoacoustic measurements could be applied to predict the BACs of drinkers, which is confirmed by the Bland-Altman plots presented in this study. The biases based on the partition ratios (Q=1,913 and Q=1,991) in the Bland-Altman plots were -0.0004% (95% CI from -0.0011 to +0.0003% for males) and -0.0017% (95% CI from -0.020 to +0.017% for females).
Objective: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) has been considered the primary treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injured patient. However, there is little biomechanical evidence regarding bilateral knee joint biomechanics during landing and cutting task after ACLR. Method: Eighteen females with ACLR participated in this investigation. Double leg jump landing (DLJL) and single leg jump cut (SLJC) biomechanics were assessed. Results: During DLJL, the healthy knee showed greater knee valgus angle at initial contact ($^{\circ}$) compared to the injured knee (Injured: $2.93{\pm}2.59$, Healthy: $4.20{\pm}2.46$, t=2.957, p=0.009). There was a significant difference in anterior tibial shear force ($N{\times}N^{-1}$) with greater in the injured knee (Injured: $1.41{\pm}0.39$, Healthy: $1.30{\pm}0.35$, t=2.201, p=0.042). During SLJC, injured knee showed greater knee extension moment ($N^*m{\times}[N^*m]^{-1}$) compared to healthy knee (Injured: $0.51{\pm}0.19$, Healthy: $0.47{\pm}0.17$, t=2.761, p=0.013). However, there was no significant differences between the knees in the other variables. Conclusion: ACLRfemales exhibited a greater knee valgus angle at initial contact and lesser anterior tibial shear force on the healthy knee during double leg jump landing. In addition, ACLR females showed a greater knee extension moment on the injured knee during single leg jump cut.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the fad dieting status and needs of nutrition education on healthy dieting in male and female collegians according to the desired loss weight. The subjects were 611 students (287 males, 324 females) from universities in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces in Korea. The subjects were divided into the following four groups based on the difference between their current body weight and their desired body weight: no desired weight loss (WL0), desired weight loss less than 5 kg (WL5), desired weight loss 6 to 10 kg (WL10), and desired weight loss more than 11 kg (WL11). The fad dieting status was surveyed using a questionnaire about 11 selected trendy dieting methods. The higher desired weight loss group showed higher current weight and BMI in both males and females. Self weight overestimation was higher in the females than in the males, and in the WL10 group than in the other groups of males. As desired loss weight increased, weight loss trials and experienced trendy dieting types increased in both males and females. In the male subjects, the experience of the half meal diet and the chicken breast diet was significantly associated with the desired loss weight. In females, trials of more trendy diet types including the half meal diet, cereal diet, fasting, and Atkins diet were significantly associated with the higher desired loss weight. The need for nutrition education on healthy dieting was high among all the different desired weight loss groups, showing that a minimum of 60% of subjects in each group answered 'necessary and strongly necessary', with the highest in the WL11 group in both males and females. From these results, desired loss weight is associated with higher current weight status, unhealthy weight control practices, and needs for nutrition education in both male and female subjects. Therefore, in the future, nutrition education programs should give greater attention to providing healthy dieting methods for young collegians who desire more weight loss.
This study was carried out to examine the association of age, nutrient intake, alcohol drinking and smoking on serum lipid and apolipoprotein levels in 100 healthy adults (54 males and 46 females). The serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p<0.05), apolipoprotein B (Apo B) levels, LDL-C:high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, Apo B:apolipoprotein(Apo A-I) ratio and atherogenic index (AI) (p<0.001) were significantly higher in males than females, but HDL-cholesterol level was significantly lower (p<0.01) in males than females. The plasma ascorbic acid concentration had no difference in both genders. Most of nutrient intakes except Ca, vitamin A and vitamin $B_2$ were higher than RI (Recommended intake) in both males and females. The meal frequency per day was significantly higher (p<0.01) in males than females, while meal speed, the heaviest meal, meal quantity and meal regularity had no significant differences. The rates of drinking and smoking were significantly higher (p<0.01) in males (59.3%, 37.2%) than females (17.3%, 6.9%). The age was positively correlated with triglyceride level in males (p<0.05), and with total cholesterol (p<0.001), LDL-cholesterol (p<0.001), Apo B (p<0.01), LDL-C:HDL-C ratio (p<0.01), Apo B:Apo A-I ratio (p<0.05) and AI (p<0.01) in females. The levels of serum lipid and apolipoprotein were more correlated with protein intake than other macronutrient intakes in males, while those in females were more correlated energy, carbohydrate and lipid intakes than protein intake. The effect of drinking on serum lipid and apolipoprotein levels was bigger in males than females, while the effect of smoking on those was bigger in females than males. The plasma ascorbic acid concentration was positively correlated with HDL-cholesterol (p<0.05), Apo A-I levels (p<0.001), whereas negatively correlated with Apo B:Apo A-I ratio (p<0.05) in males. And that was positively correlated with HDL-cholesterol (p<0.05) in females. These results suggest that moderate macronutrient intake, less alcohol consumption and non-smoking were necessary to maintain healthy lipid profile with aging in adults.
Mean daily excretion of Ca, P, and Fe were measured in 49 healthy young Koreans(23 males and 26 females) form urine and feces samples cellected for three days. Dietary intakes of the subjects during the study periods were calculated from intake records. Main results of the study are as following: 1) Mean daily urinary, fecal, and total Ca excretions were 162$\pm$20mg, 346$\pm$39mg, and 508$\pm$50mg, respectively in males and 154$\pm$16mg, 262$\pm$26mg, and 416$\pm$24mg, respectively in females. The mean values of the two groups were not significantly different. 2) Mean daily urinary, fecal, and total P excretions were 751$\pm$45mg, 384$\pm$26mg and 1135$\pm$56mg, respectively in males and 552$\pm$29mg, 335$\pm$34mg and 894$\pm$50mg, respectively in females. Urinary and total P excretion in males were significantly higher than females(p<0.01), but such differences disappeared when the excretions were calculated per kg body weight. 3) mean daily fecal Fe excretions were 12.8$\pm$0.9mg in males and 10.1$\pm$0.8mg in females. The mean value in males was significantly higher than that in females(p<0.05) but when calculated per kg body weight, both groups excreted 0.2mg/kg body weight. 4) Mean daily intake levels of the minerals estimated from three day food intake records were Ca 543mg, P 1136mg, and Fe 14.3mg in males and Ca 533mg, P 869mg, Fe 10.8mg in females. These intake levels seem to be sufficient to supply the daily losses of the study subjects except P in females. However, the problem of estimating dietary intake levels by food intake record should be recognized. Especially females in the study are in menstration age and their Fe losses in the menstration (estimated to be 0.5mg of available Fe per day) should be also supplied in the diet.
