  • In-situ Raman and X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on mineral natrolite (Na-zeolite) to investigate the dehydration behavior under high temperature and high pressure-temperature conditions. XRD data show reversible dehydration up to $450^{\circ}C$ whereas Raman data show irreversible change when the material is heated up to $630^{\circ}C$. The existence of post-natrolite was newly identified to form from ${\beta}$-metanatrolite at $380^{\circ}C$ upon cooling. The formation of dehydrated metanatrolite under simultaneous high temperature-pressure (room temperature < T < $300^{\circ}C$, 0 GPa < P < 2.1 GPa) conditions was not observed.

  • This study attempted to determine the effect of various thawing methods and storage periods on the quality of froen cooked rice. Frozen cooked rice was thawed at four different methods, such as pressure cooking, conventional cooking, microwave heating and thawing at room temperature after 10 days, 30days and 90 days frozen storage. We conducted a physico-chemical analysis (moisture content, dehydration rates, degree of gelatinization, color value and texture) and sensory evalution on the frozen-thawed cooked rice. The study showed that there were no significant differences on the quality characteristics of frozen-thawed cooked rice during the storage period of 90 days. However, the thawing method of pressure cooking caused high moisture content, rapid dehydration rates, and a high degree of gelatinization on the cooked rice. Thus, the desirabililty for the rice diminished becaused of the excess moisture content and the change of appearance and testure in the rice due to the high temperature. There were similiar quality characteristics to the cooked rice after forzen-thawing whether by conventional cooking or by microwave heating and just after cooking. Thawing at room temperature also caused a significant decrease in quality characteristics.

  • In this study, a new reaction system is proposed to solve the problems of the existing 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) dehydration reaction system. It was confirmed that the reaction system did not wok as it should operate properly when using a furnace, which is commonly used in commercial processes, to raise the reactant, 2,3-BDO, to the reaction temperature, 360 ℃, at near atmoshperic pressure. It is because of the substance considered to be oligomers of 2,3-BDO. It can lead to safety problems, such as blockages inside the furnace's tube and explosions, as well as tricky maintenance issues in the reaction system. To solve it, the temperature of reactant can be brought down by using a heat exchanger with High Pressure (HP) steam instead of the furnace, which has a hot spot problem through the vacuum operation and reduce the reaction temperature. It can be seen that the reactor performance is almost similar under the vacuum operation and the lower reaction temperature, 330 ℃, by using a reaction kinetics. This result explains why the new reaction system is proposed.

  • The main purpose of this study is to develop a commercial scale of pervaporative process equipped with hollow fiber membrane modules, being able to effectually purify organic solvent at high temperature well over its boiling point under high vapor pressure. Three constituent technologies have been developed; 1) to fabricate braid-reinforced hollow fiber membrane stable in high pressure and high temperature application, 2) to design and fabricate a commercial scale of hollow fiber membrane module, and 3) to design and fabricate a pilot scale of pervaporation equipment system. The developed hollow fiber membrane possesses a membrane performance superior to the membrane of Sulzer (Germany) which is the most-well known for pervaporation process, and the membrane module equips hollow fiber membranes of $4.6m^2$ and the pervaporation system can treat organic liquid at 200 L/h, which is based on the dehydration of 95 wt% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Since the membrane module is designed to flow in and pass through the inside of individual hollow fiber membrane, not to involve both the formation of feed's dead volume observed in flat-sheet membrane module and the channeling of feed occurring inside hollow fiber bundle which lower membrane performance seriously, it showed excellent separation efficiency. In particular, the module is inexpensive and has less heat loss into its surrounding, in compared with flat-sheet membrane module. In addition, permeant can be removed effectively from the outer surface of hollow fiber membrane because the applied vacuum is conveyed uniformly through space between fibers into respective fiber, even into one in the middle of the hollow fiber bundle in which the space between fibers is uniform in distance. Since the hollow fiber membrane pervaporation system is the first one ever developed in the world, our own unique proprietary technology can be secured, preoccupying technical superiority in export competitive challenges.

  • The Yeongnam Massif, one of Precambrian basements in Korean Peninsula, is characterized by widespread occurrence of low-pressure/high-temperature (LP/HT) schists and gneisses accompanying extensive anatexis and granitic magmatism. Metapelitic mineral assemblages define three progressive metamorphic zones pertinent to low-pressure facies series: cordierite, sillimanite and garnet zones with increasing temperature. Metamorphic grade ranges from lower amphibolite to lower granulite facies and metamorphic conditions reach ca. 750-800 C and 4-6 kbar in migmatitic gneisses. Migmatitic gneisses are prominent in the sillimanite and garnet zones. Textural and petrogenetic relationshipsin leucosome suggest that migmatitic gneiss is the product of anatexis of metasedimentary rocks. The migmatite formation during the prograde metamorphism is governed initially by fluid-present melting and subsequently by biotite-dehydration melting. The large amount of leucosomes in the sillimaniteand garnet zones can be explained by the fluid-present molting possibly triggered by an external supply of aqueous fluid. Field and geochronologic relationships between leucogranites and migmatitic gneisses further suggest that leucogranite has providedfluid and heat required for widespread migmatization.

  • Whisker-type magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH), is used in filler and flame-retardant composites based on its hydrate phase and its ability to undergo endothermic dehydration in fire conditions, respectively. In general, the length of whiskers is determined according to various synthetic conditions in a hydrothermal reaction with high temperature (${\sim}180^{\circ}C$). In this work, high-quality 513 MHSH whiskers are synthesized by controlling the concentration of the raw material in ambient conditions without high pressure. Particularly, the concentration of the starting material is closely related to the length, width, and purity of MHSH. In addition, a ceramic-coating system is adopted to enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the MHSH whiskers. The physical properties of the silica-coated MHSH are characterized by an abrasion test, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy.

  • An ex-situ gravitational fixed bed pyrolysis reactor was used over Al2O3 supported Ni2P based catalyst with various Ni/P molar ratios (0.5-2.0) and constant nickel loading of 5.37 mmol/g Al2O3 to determine the hydrodeoxygenation of rubberwood sawdust (RWS) at atmospheric pressure. The 3D catalysts formed were characterized structurally as well as acidic properties were determined by hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The Ni2P phase formed completely on Al2O3 for 1.5 Ni/P ratio, although lesser crystallite sizes of Ni2P were seen at Ni/P ratios less than 1.5. Additionally, it was shown that when nickel loading level increased, acidity increased and specific surface area dropped, probably because nickel phosphate is not easily converted to Ni2P. When Ni/P ratio was 1.5, Ni2P phase fully formed on Al2O3. The catalytic activity was explained in terms of impacts of reaction temperature and Ni/P molar ratio. At relatively high temperature of 450℃, the high-value deoxygenated produce was predominantly composed of n-alkanes. Based on the findings, it was suggested that hydrogenolysis, hydrodeoxygenation, dehydration, decarbonylation, and hydrogenation are all part of mechanism underlying hydrotreatment of RWS. In conclusion, the synthesized Ni2P/ Al2O3 catalyst was capable of deoxygenating RWS with ease at atmospheric pressure, primarily resulting in long chained (C9-C24) hydrocarbons and acetic acid.

  • High specific surface area zirconia with acid-basic property was synthesized by precipitation using reflux method or hydrothermal synthesis method using ammonium hydroxide solution as precipitant in the range of pH of Zr solution from 2 to 10. The prepared zirconia was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), isopropanol temperature programmed desorption (IPA-TPD), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the catalytic activity in the IPA decomposition reaction was correlated with the acid-basic properties. When using reflux method, high pH of Zr solution was required to obtain high fraction of tetragonal zirconia, and pure tetragonal zirconia was possible at pH 9 or higher. High pH was required to obtain high specific surface area zirconia, and the hydrous zirconia synthesized at pH 10 had high specific surface area zirconia of $260m^2g^{-1}$ even after calcination at $600^{\circ}C$. However, hydrothermal synthesis with high pressure under the same conditions resulted in very low specific surface area below $40m^2g^{-1}$ and monoclinic phase zirconia was synthesized. High pH of the solution was required to obtain high specific surface area tetragonal phase zirconia. In hydrothermal synthesis requiring high pressure, monoclinic zirconia was produced irrespective of the pH of the solution, and the specific surface area was relatively low. Zirconia with high specific surface area and tetragonal phase was predominantly acidic compared to basicity and only propylene, which was observed as selective dehydration reaction in IPA decomposition reaction, was produced.

  • The $Al_2O_3$ with various phases were prepared by simple ex-situ hydrolysis and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process of Al powder. The nano bayerite $(\beta-Al(OH)_3)$ phase was derived by hydrolysis of commercial powder of Al with micrometer size, whereas the bohemite (AlO(OH)) phase was obtained by hydrolysis of nano Al powder synthesized by pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method. Compaction as well as dehydration of both nano bayerite and bohemite was carried out simultaneously by SPS method, which is used to fabricate dense powder compacts with a rapid heating rate of $100^{\circ}C$ per min. under the pressure of 50MPa. After compaction treatment in the temperature ranges from $100^{\circ}C\;to\; 1100^{\circ}C$, the bayerite and bohemite phases change into various alumina phases depending on the compaction temperatures. The bayerite shows phase transition of $Al(OH)_3{\to}{\eta}-Al_2O_3{\to}{\theta}-Al_2O_3{\to}\alpha-Al_2O_3$ sequences. On the other hand, the bohemite experiences the phase transition from AlO(OH) to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3\;at\;350^{\circ}C.$ It shows AlO(OH) ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3{\to}{\delta}-Al_2O_3{\to}{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ sequences. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ compacted at $550^{\circ}C$ shows a high surface area $(138m^2/g)$.
