The enzymatic hydrolysis of Castor oil for the mass production of ricinoleic acid was studied to find out the optimum conditions such as solvents and the weight ratio of substrate to enzyme. Three different lipases were tested for the hydrolysis of castor oil: lipase from Porcine Pancrease(lipsase PP), lipase from Candida cylindracea(lipase CC), lipase from Candida Rugosa(lipase CR). The poor mass transfer in water caused a low degree of hydrolysis of castor oil. To overcome this problem, organic solvents were used. Among organic solvents tested, hydrophobic solvents gave better results of hydrolysis than hydrophilic solvents. Organic solvents also lowered or changed the effect of pH. Isopropyl ether made complete hydrolysis of castor oil. The ratio of water to isopropyl ether and the ratio of weight ratio of lipase to castor oil were important for the hydrolysis of castor oil. At 30$^{\circ}C$ castor oil was completely hydrolyzed by 4 wt% of lipase in the mixture of isopropyl ether and water(1:1 in volume).

This study is related to the investigation of the characteristics of phase transfer catalysts on the addition reaction of carbon dioxide and phenyl glycidyl ether(PGE). Quaternary ammonium salts showed a good conversion of PGE at l atm of $CO_2$. Among the quaternary ammonium salts tested, the ones with higher alkyl chain length and with more hydrophilic counter anion showed higher catalytic activity. Polyethylene glycol and crown ether were also effective catalysts when they are used with NaI. High pressure of $CO_2$increased the conversion of PGE by increasing solubility of $CO_2$in NMP. A mechanism of the reaction involving the role of phase transfer catalyst was also proposed.
Eco-convivial composites with improved properties are essential to present polymer scenario and can be made easily by replacing partially/completely renewable materials either matrix or reinforcement along with few % of additives. In these investigations, Abaca fabric have been used as reinforcement for manufacturing of Vinyl ester composites through VARTM technique and study the effect of alkali surface treatment of abaca fabric and flame retardant additives i.e., ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with halloysite nano-clay (HNT) on mechanical and flame retardant properties. The results concluded that, surface treatment deceased the hydrophilic nature of fabric and enhanced the interfacial bonding with hydrophobic matrix and eventually increased mechanical properties slightly of developed composites. Similarly, the flame retardancy of the composites improved significantly and increases the burning time by varying the wt% of filler concentration.
The soap-free emulsion polymerization was carried out for Styrene/Butadiene system with Acrylonitrile as hydrophilic comonomer and KPS as initiator. Under the condition of below 50% conversion, the dependence of Rp on $[AN]^n$ and $[KPS]^n$ was found to be n=1.617-1.050 and n=0.83-0.96 for [AN] and [KPS], respectively. The effect of $[AN]^n$ and $[KPS]^n$ on particle number density (Np) was determined to be n=1.533 and n=0.733, respectively. The highest conversion was obtained under the conditions of pH=5 and ratio of total monomer (g) to water (g)=0.5. The mechanical properties of SBR obtained in this experiment were shown to be inferior to commercial SBR in terms of tensile strength, 300% modulus and elongation. It was found that cure rate of SBR prepared in this experiment was faster than that of commercial SBR.
Porous polyurethane membrane was prepared by the phase inversion process with variable permeability in response to pH and solvent composition. Hydrophilic polymers were grafted on the surface of the symmetric porous membrane. Porous polyurethane membrane was obtained in DMSO/methanol. It was subsequently grafted with acrylamide on the surface with ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as a initiator, followed by the hydrolysis to obtain poly(acrylic acid-g-urethane) (PAA-g-PU) membrane. The change in permeability of vitamine $B_2$(riboflavin) was investigated through PAA-g-PU. For PAA-g-PU membrane, permeability increased with the decrease in pH, and with an increase in solvent content in sink solution.
In this study, a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was modified by coating neutral hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol). The flux of pure water was measured and then fouling test was conducted with bovin serum albumin (BSA) as model protein foulant. As a result, the experiments showed that pure water flux was decreased but anti-fouling property was significantly enhanced. Pure water flux with increasing molecular weights of the polymer was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. Also, Pure water flux with increasing solution concentration was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. It is probably due to the increase in hydrophilicity and decrease in roughness of the membrane surface, as revealed by contact angle and AFM analysis.
Modified polyethylenes with polar side groups of -COOK, $-CONH_2$, and -COOH were prepared at a dispersion state in water by reacting poly(ethylene-co-methylacrylate) (PEMA) with aqueous solution of KOH and ammonia. Types and their contents of side groups were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and atomic absorption analysis. Solution viscosity and surface tension were also measured as a function of solid contents. Stability and transparency of the dispersions were greatly affected by the content of COOK in the side groups. The stable dispersion could be prepared at a composition of COOK of 20 mole% at least. The transparency was increased with increasing the COOK contents, but decreased with increasing the amide content at a constant composition of COOK. Solution viscosities increased abruptly at a lower solid content when the COOK contents were increased, implying higher entanglement between the chains in dispersions with higher content of hydrophilic COOK group. The dispersions of higher COOK content revealed lower surface tension values.

This study reports a synthesis of an amphiphilic linear block copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic poly (lactide) (PLA) block and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) block, PLA-b-hbPG. Simple chemical modification of the hbPG block with 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CA) led to a photo-crosslinkable block copolymer, PLA-b-hbPG-CA. Nanosized micelles of the block copolyemrs were used as drug carriers for sustainable release. The hbPG shell made of a small molecular weight hbPG block showed excellent hydrophilicity, which can minimize in vivo toxicity. The UV-crosslinked PLA-b-hbPG-CA micelles loaded with drugs colud be served as a drug delivery carrier for its biocompatibility and self-assembled structures.

The influence of the reactant composition on the surface free energy and on the dispersity in water was investigated by using the fluorine-containing water-soluble polyurethane synthesized with the fluorine-containing diol and hydrophilic diol. The diol donating ionic characteristics was more effective than polyol, and stable emulsion with the diameter of 610~310 nm was obtained in the range of 0.3~0.7 molar ratio of the diol to polyol. According to the increment of fluorine-containing compound up to 10 wt %, the surface free energy of polyurethane was dramatically decreased from 22.3 to 12.6 dyn/cm, and the diameter of water dispersed polyurethane increased from 380 to 860 nm due to the strong interaction between polymer molecules because fluorine segments are arranged on the surface of molecules. The macromonomer with perfluoroalkyl group was more effective in complement of the weak point of water-soluble polyurethane, which is a decrease of hydrophobicity, because of strong hydrophobicity.
In this study, the nanofiltration (NF) composite membranes for the low pressure use were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane as a supporter. Poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were coated onto the PVDF membrane by both layer-by-layer and salting-out methods. To characterize the prepared NF membranes in terms of the flux and salt rejection, 100 mg/L feed solutions of NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ were used at the flow rate of 1 L/min and the operating pressure of 2 bar at room temperature. The NF membranes coated with 20,000 ppm PSSA (ionic strength 1.0) solution for 3 minutes and then 30,000 ppm (ionic strength 0.1) solution for 1 minute were observed the best performance. The permeability and salt rejection were 38.5 LMH, 57.1% for NaCl, 37.9 LMH and 90.2% for $MgCl_2$ and 32.4 LMH and 54.6% for $CaSO_4$, respectively.
