HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is a hydrophilic material which is broadly used for ophthalmologic purposes and especially in the manufacture of soft contact lenses. Also, the oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) is a very important physical characteristic in the evaluation of a material’s adequacy to be used to produce contact lenses. This study used HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methylmethacrylate), NVP (Nvinyl-pyrrolidone), the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) for copolymerization, and measured the oxygen transmissibility of the central and peripheral areas of the manufactured general and color contact lenses using the polarographic method. The measurement showed that the decreased amount of oxygen transmissibility of the central and peripheral areas of the contact lenses measured using the polarographic method range between 40.77% and 49.13%, and the oxygen transmissibility of the color contact lens showed a larger decrease due to the effects of the coloring materials.

As a highly hydrophilic fibrillar mineral in nature, attapulgite (ATP) is a promising new additive for preparation of ultrafiltration (UF) hybrid membrane. In this work, ATP particles, which were grafted with a new Gemini surfactant of Ethyl Stearate-di(octadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) to detach the crystal bundles to single crystal and enhance the uniform dispersion in an organic polymer matrix, were incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix, and PVDF/Gemini-ATP hybrid membranes for adsorptive removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution were prepared via a phase inversion method. Chemical composition, crystalization and morphology of the modified ATP were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The morphology of the hybrid membrane was characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the performance of permeability, hydrophilicity and adsorption of Ni(II) ions were studied, and the adsorption kinetics of the PVDF/ATP hybrid membranes were particular concerned. The results showed that the hybrid membrane displayed a good thermal stability and hydrophilicity. Comparing with PVDF membrane, the hybrid membrane possessed good adsorption capacity for Ni(II) ions, and the adsorption kinetics fit well with Lagergren second-order equation.
Since the enzymatic degradation of microbial poly(hydroxylalkanoate)s (PHAs), such as poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] and poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate] initially occurs by a surface erosion process, their degradation behaviors can be controlled by the change of surface property. In order to control the rate of enzymatic degradation, plasma modification technique was applied to change the surface property of microbial PHAs. The surface hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of PHA films were introduced by $CF_3H$ and $O_2$ plasma exposures, respectively. The enzymatic degradation was carried out at $37^{\circ}C$ in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) in the presence of an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Alcaligenes facalis T1. The results showed that the significant retardation of initial enzymatic erosion of $CF_3H$ plasma-treated PHAs was observed due to the hydrophobicity and the enzyme inactivity of the fluorinated surface layers while the erosion rate of $O_2$ plasma-treated PHAs was not accelerated.
The objective of this study was to elucidate the feasibility to improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble itraconazole via solid dispersions by using supercritical fluid (SCF). Solid dispersions of itraconazole with hydrophilic polymer, HPMC 2910, were prepared by the aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES) under different process conditions of temperature/pressure. The particle size of solid dispersions ranged from 100 to 500 nm. The equilibrium solubility increased with decrease (15 to 10 MPa) in pressure and increase (40 to $60^{\circ}C$) in temperature. The solid dispersions prepared at $60^{\circ}C$/15 MPa showed a slight increase in equilibrium solubility (approximately 27-fold increase) when compared to pure itraconazole, while those prepared at $60^{\circ}C$/10MPa showed approximately 610-fold increase and no endothermic peaks corresponding to pure itraconazole were observed, indicating that itraconazole might be molecularly dispersed in HPMC 2910 in the amorphous form. The amorphous state of itraconazole was confirmed by DSC/XRD data. The pharmacokinetic parameters of the ASES-processed solid dispersions, such as $T_{max},\;C_{max},\;and\;AUC_{0-24h}$ were almost similar to $Sporanox_{\circledR}$ capsule which shows high bioavailability. Hence, it was concluded that the ASES process could be a promising technique to reduce particle size and/or prepare amorphous solid dispersion of drugs in order to improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.
Sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)(SPES) of various ion exchange capacity (IEC) was prepared by heterogeneous sulfonation with chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) to make hydrophilic ultrafiltration membrane for reducing fouling. The effects of CSA concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time has been investigated. The reaction was effective when the temperature is above 10$\circ$C and the CSA concentration is over 0.05 mol, although polymer chain has been significantly degraded. The substitution of sulfonic acid groups was characterized by FTIR and $^1$H-NMR. Transport properties and fouling test have been conducted to the modified SPES ultrafiltration rnembranrs by heterogeneors method. Membranes were obtained using DCM and PVP as a non-solvent and pore forming agent, respectively. Flux reduced and rejection increased with ion exchange capacity. Finger-like structure was disappeared and the thickness of top layer was increased. Dense membrane by non-solvent DCM and porous membrane by pore forming agent PVP was prepared. Fouling was reduced with increasing ion exchange capacity because of hydrophilicity.
Recently, there have been a lot of incidents related to ground sinks in urban areas, but restoration work is complicated and inconvenience due to on-site control, and particularly, grouting and soil filling are generally applied as recovery measures, but when the grouting or the soil filling is carried out, material segregation phenomenon occurs in the ground or a lot of restoration amount is often required, depending on the state of sinks and the existence of groundwater under the ground and the soil can be lost due to the flow of the ground water, and thus the purpose of this study is to develop a pouch-type filler applied to a trenchless method for emergency reinforcement of the ground sinks with the aim of quick recovery of the ground sink in urban areas, and as a result, it was confirmed that compression strength and the expansion ratio were different according to the temperature of ground water and the compression strength and the expansion ratio could be controlled by mixing alumina powder.

The composite membranes comprising of sulfonated polymers as matrix and ionic liquids as ion-conducting medium in replacement of water are studied to investigate the effect of annealing of the sulfonated polymers. The polymeric membranes are prepared on recast Nafion containing the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ($EMIBF_4$). The composite membranes are characterized by thermogravitational analyses, ion conductivity and small-angle X-ray scattering. The composite membranes annealed at $190^{\circ}C$ for 2 h after the fixed drying step showed better ionic conductivity, but no significant increase in thermal stability. The mean Bragg distance between the ionic clusters, which is reflected in the position of the ionomer peak (small-angle scattering maximum), is larger in the annealed composite membranes containing $EMIBF_4$ than the non-annealed ones. It might have been explained to be due to the different level of ion-clustering ability of the hydrophilic parts (i.e., sulfonic acid groups) in the non- and annealed polymer matrix. In addition, the ionic conductivity of the membranes shows higher for the annealed composite membranes containing $EMIBF_4$. It can be concluded that the annealing of the composite membranes containing ionic liquids due to an increase in ion-clustering ability is able to bring about the enhancement of ionic conductivity suitable for potential use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) at medium temperatures ($150-200^{\circ}C$) in the absence of external humidification.
Hydrolysis of biomass for the production of fermentable sugar can be improved by the addition of surfactants. In pulp and paper mills, lignin, which is a by-product of the pulping process, can be utilized as a fine chemical. In the hydrolysis process, lignin is one of the major inhibitors of the enzymatic breakdown cellulose into sugar monomer. Therefore, the conversion of lignin into a biosurfactant offers the opportunity to solve the waste problem and improve hydrolysis efficiency. In this study, lignin derivatives, a biosurfactant, was applied to enzymatic hydrolysis of various lignocellulosic biomass. This Biosurfactant can be prepared by reacting lignin with a hydrophilic polymer such as polyethylene glycol diglycidylethers (PEDGE). In this study, the effect of biosurfactants on the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB), oil palm empty fruit bunch, and sugarcane trash with different lignin contents was investigated. The results show that lignin derivatives improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass with low lignin content, however, it has less influence on the enzymatic hydrolysis of other pretreated biomass with lignin content higher than 10% (w/w). The use of biosurfactant on SSB kraft pulp can increase the sugar yield from 45.57% to 81.49%.

While commercial polystyrene-based ion exchange membranes have simple manufacturing processes, they also possess poor durability due to their brittleness. Poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate with hydrophilic side chains of poly(ethylene glycol) was used as a co-monomer to make the membranes have improved flexibility. Hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the anion exchange membranes were able to be adjusted by varying the chain lengths of the poly(ethylene glycol). For the preparation of the anion exchange membranes, a porous PE substrate was immersed into monomer solutions and thermally polymerized. The prepared membranes were subsequently reacted with trimethylamine to produce anion exchange functional groups, Quaternary ammonium salts. The prepared pore-filled anion exchange membranes were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity, electric resistance, elongation at break and water uptake.
In this study, a selective layer of poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was formed by layer-by-layer method onto a porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membrane as the suppoter membrane. The salting out method was used by adding Mg salt to the coating solution. Several experimental conditions of the ionic strength, polymer concentration, and coating time were investigated, and the flux and rejection were measured at the operating pressure of 2 atm for 100 mg/L of NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ as the feed solution. The membranes coated with PSSA 20,000 ppm, coating time 3 minutes, ionic strength 1.0, PEI 30,000 ppm, coating time 1 minute, and ionic strength 0.1 were observed the best. In the 100 ppm NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ feed solutions, the flux of 20.4, 19.4, and 18.7 LMH, and the rejection of 67, 90, and 66.6%, respectively.
