  • The kinetic and mechanism of the hydrothermal reaction between lime and quartz used solid state reaction equations have been investigated. Hydrothermal reaction on the starting materials was carried out in an autoclave that quartz mixed with calcium hydroxide in CaO/$SiO_2$ ratio of 0.8-1.0 for 0.5-8 hour at saturated steam pressure of $180-200^{\circ}C$. The rate of reaction was given from the ratio of uncombined lime and quartz content to the total lime and quartz content. The rate of reaction was obtained the results by the Jander's equation $[1-(1-\alpha)^{1/3}]^N=Kt$. The reaction of lime is controlled mainly by the dissolution such as N=1, and the reaction of quartz is controlled mostly by the diffusion such as $N\risingdotseq2$. The rate of hydrothermal reaction in the calcium silicate hydrates system is suggested to be determined generally by the mass transfer through the product laver formed around the reactant particles. The rate equation for whole hydrothermal reaction is shown that it is converted into the rate determining step by the diffusion from the boundary reaction such as approximately $N=1-2$.

  • The hydrothermal alteration is evaluated using multicomponent equilibrium calculations with the program CHILLER for the reactions between hydrothermal water and rhyolite at the temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 500 bars. The chemical-reaction model on the depositional processes of the sericitite confirms that the hydrothermal water-rock interaction(hydrothermal alteration) is the main mechanism of the sericitite formation. The principal change in the aqueous phase during the reaction is the pH increase. Overall trends for the major species are the increase in total molalities of K, Ca, $SiO_2$, Al, Mg, Fe, Na, and sulfide in solid phase with hydrothermal water-rhyolite reaction and the decrease of them in aqeous solution by precipitation of hydrothermal products. Quartz and sericite are the first minerals to form. The sequence of minerals to precipitate following them is chlorite, epidote, pyrite and microcline as water/rock ratio decreases. Although calculated results cannot duplicate the complexities of natural hydrothermal alteration, the calculation provides thermodynamic constraints on the natural process. The calculation results resemble those of experimental studies. Sericitite forms where pH decreases and water/rock ratio increases.

  • The synthesis of clay mineral through the hydrothermal reaction of the anorthite, which is distributed in San Chung-District of Korea and called as the ground rock for halloysite-kaolin, has been investigated. It was observed that this anorthite sample was easily converted into clay mineral with 0.5 wt% HCl solution at a temperature below 20$0^{\circ}C$ under a pressure about 15 atm. The conversion reaction was promoted by adding aluminum chloride under the condition concerned. Aluminum chloride was considered to supply the insufficient aluminum ion during the conversion reaction and to reprepare the acid solution-condition by adding the HCl-component as a by-product. According to the electron micrographs, it was confirmed that fine tubular or needle-shaped halloysite-kaolin minerals with the crystal length shorter than about 1.1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ could be obtained by the hydrothermal reaction for 5 days under those conditions.

  • The platelet AlO(OH) nano colloids were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of the $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ obtained with dehydration of $\gamma$-AlO(OH) and dilute $CH_3COOH$ solution. In hydrothermal reaction process, reversible reaction was accompanied between $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ and AlO(OH), and hydrothermal reaction temperature, hydrothermal reaction time and $CH_3COOH$ concentration had an effect on the crystal structure, surface chemical property, surface area, pore characteristics and crystal morphology of the AlO(OH) nano colloid particles. In this study, it was investigated to the hydrothermal reaction condition of the AlO(OH) nano colloid for using catalyst support, heat resisting agent, adsorbents, binder, polishing agent and coating agent. The crystal structure, surface area, pore volume and pore size of the platelet AlO(OH) nano colloids were investigated by XRD, TEM, TG/DTA, FT-IR and $N_2$ BET method in liquid nitrogen temperature.

  • Residual solid in excess sludge treated by hydrothermal reaction was investigated as raw material for its recycling. Treated excess sludge and residual solid were also focused on their content change during hydrothermal reaction. Two kinds of excess sludge, obtained from a local food factory and a municipal wastewater treatment process, were tested under various conditions. Following hydrothermal reaction, depending on the reaction conditions, biodegradable substrates in treated excess sludge appeared to increase. The separated residual solid was a composite composed of organic and inorganic materials. The proportion of carbon varied from 34.0 to 41.6% depending on reaction conditions. Although 1.89% of hazardous materials were detected, SiO2 (Quartz) was a predominant constituent of the residual solid. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments revealed that the residual solid was of a partially amorphous state, suggesting that the residual solids could be easily converted to stable and non harmful substances through a stabilization process. Thus, this technology could be successfully used to control excess sludge and its reuse.

  • The technology for hydrothermal reaction of organic waste is one of the promising process to improve energy efficiency of biomass waste recycling system since moisture contents of treated biomass could be reduced at 40% or less than by dehydration processes. For these reasons, many parts of the world are interested in hydrothermal reaction of organic waste. In this paper, drying performances were evaluated with and without hydrothermal reaction of organic wastes which are sewage sludge and food wastes. For the hydrothermal reaction, organic wastes were treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Drying time of treated organic waste by hydrothermal reaction was reduced. In case of food waste drying at $100^{\circ}C$, drying time of treated wasted was reduced more 52.9% than non-treated. Hence, drying performances of sewage sludge and food wastes should be improved by hydrothermal reaction. Drying rates of treated wastes were considerably increased at preheat period of drying characteristic curve as followings; at $80^{\circ}C$ sludge as 148%, $100^{\circ}C$ sewage sludge as 151%, $80^{\circ}C$ food waste as 209%, $100^{\circ}C$ food waste as 366%. It means the surface area of treated wastes could be increased with destruction of cell membrane by hydrothermal reaction. However, the designer and operator of drying process should be careful, since enhanced drying rate cause the extension the decreasing drying period.

  • Ultra-fine hydroxyapatite powder were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction at 10 atm, 3 hrs of Ca(OH)2 suspension with (NH4)2HPO4 solution, and were characterized sintering behavior. Sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powders which synthesized by hydrothermal reaction method has less weight loss, less sintering shrinkage and superior mechanical property, and was more dense than sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powder which synthesized by wet method. Sintered bodies were hydroxyapatite single phase. When soack in Ringer's solution for 2 weeks, hydroxyapatite powders preserved hydroxyapatite and sintered body absorbed trace of Ca2+ ion with soaked time.

  • One-dimensional (1D) piezoelectric nanostructures are attractive candidates for energy generation because of their excellent piezoelectric properties attributed to their high aspect ratios and large surface areas. Vertically grown BaTiO3 nanotube (NT) arrays on conducting substrates are intensively studied because they can be easily synthesized with excellent uniformity and anisotropic orientation. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of 1D BaTiO3 NT arrays on a conductive Ti substrate by electrochemical anodization and sequential hydrothermal reactions. Subsequently, we explore the effect of hydrothermal reaction conditions on the piezoelectric energy conversion efficiency of the BaTiO3 NT arrays. Vertically aligned TiO2 NT arrays, which act as the initial template, are converted into BaTiO3 NT arrays using hydrothermal reaction with various concentrations of the Ba source and reaction times. To validate the electrical output performance of the BaTiO3 NT arrays, we measure the electricity generated from each NT array packaged with a conductive metal foil and epoxy under mechanical pushings. The generated output voltage signals from the BaTiO3 NT arrays increase with increasing concentration of the Ba source and reaction time. These results provide a new strategy for fabricating advanced 1D piezoelectric nanostructures by demonstrating the correlation between hydrothermal reaction conditions and piezoelectric output performance.

  • synthesis of artificial kaolinite and the transformation of domestic halloysite have been attempted by means of the hydrothermal treatment. The hydrothermal reaction of the mixtures of gibbsite and amorphous silica was conducted for the synthesis of kaolinite under the pressure of 125MPa at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and especially the seed of kaolinite was added so as to facilitate the synthesis reaction. Domestic pink kaolin of B-grade was hydrothermally treated, in a similar way, for the transformation of crystalline form of it. Boehmite and the artificial kaolinite less than 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ could be obtained through the hydrothermal reaction. It could also be found that the majority of hyalloysite was transformed into the plate-type kaolinite through the recrystallization by treating hydrothermally for a long time.
