  • A spot welded structures have an influence on a diverse climatic situation, for instance temperature, humidity and precipitation. In addition factors of environmental pollution such as acid rain, that courses corrosion, have the tendency to increase. But spot welded structures strength is affected by humidity and environment temperature. Therefore, it is important to evaluate effect of temperature and water immersion on strength properties of spot welded part. In this study, the strength distribution of spot welded plates is evaluated the environmental temperature of zinc coated steel plates. Test is conducted with welded part immersed in distilled and synthetic sea water. Specimens are immersed into water for 10, 100, 500 and 1000 hours to evaluate the offsets of water immersion time on tensile-shear strength under the conditions of -40, 0, 20 and 5$0^{\circ}C$. From this result, spot welded specimens with 5 mm clearance have lower tensile-shear strength in the distilled water or synthetic sea water than without clearance. And they have lower tensile-shear strength under -4$0^{\circ}C$ and over 5$0^{\circ}C$.

  • To study the effect of titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles on membrane performance and structure and to explore possible improvement of using mixed solvents in the casting solution, composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via immersion precipitation method using a mixture of two solvents triethyl phosphate (TEP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and addition of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Properties of the neat and composite membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle and membrane porosity measurements. The neat and composite membranes were further investigated in terms of BSA rejection and flux decline in cross flow filtration experiments. Following hydrophilicity improvement of the PVDF membrane by addition of 0.25 wt.% $TiO_2$, (from $70.53^{\circ}$ to $60.5^{\circ}$) degree of flux decline due to irreversible fouling resistance of the composite membrane reduced significantly and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 96.85% was obtained. The results showed that using mixed solvents (DMAc/TEP) with lower content of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (0.25 wt.%) affected the sedimentation rate of nanoparticles and consequently the distribution of nanoparticles in the casting solution and membrane formation which influenced the properties of the ultimate composite membranes.

  • The polysulfone(PSf)/polyethersulfone(PES) blend membranes were prepared by an immersion precipitation method. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP) was used as a solvent and water as a nonsolvent. The composition of the coagulation bath and the dope polymer concentration as well as the blend ratio of two polymers were varied. The membrane morphologies were interpreted on the basis of the phase diagram of the PSf/PES/NMP/water system. As the solvent content in the coagulation bath increased in the single polymer system, the number of macrovoids decreased and the morphology was changed from finger-like to cellular structure. In the given bath condition phase separation occurs earlier for the solutions of PSf/PES blend than for those of single polymer. A horizontally layered structure and horizontal protuberances inside the macrovoid were observed for the membranes formed from PSf/PES blend solutions. This peculiar structure formation can be interpreted by a PSf-rich/PES-rich phase separation followed by a polymer-rich/polymer-lean phase separation during the exchange of solvent and nonsolvent.

  • Polyethersulfone (PES) and cellulose acetate (CA) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes having different molecular weight cut-off values were prepared by immersion precipitation method by changing the compositions of easting solution. Egg white solution was concentrated to volume concentration ratio 4 in tubular UF with membranes made of moderately hydrophobic PES and hydrophilic CA. The process Parameters such as pressure and fluid velocity were controlled in order to apply successfully for egg white solution and to investigate the pressure dependency. The resistance values were measured to investigate the fouling and concentration polarization effect on membrane performance. During concen- tration of egg white solution by UF, the fouling layer appeared to contribute little resistance to flux compared to that of polarized layer.

  • This study was performed to investigate the surface properties and in vitro biocompatibility of electrochemically oxidized Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by anodic spark discharge technique. Discs of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy of 20 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were polished sequentially from #300 to 1000 SiC paper, ultrasonically washed with acetone and distilled water for 5 min, and dried in an oven at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Anodizing was performed using a regulated DC power supply. The applied voltages were given at 240, 280, 320, and 360 V and current density of $30mA/cm^2$. Hydrothermal treatment was conducted by high pressure steam at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using a autoclave. Samples were soaked in the Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ during 30 days. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The oxide films were porous with pore size of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$. The size of micropores increased with increasing the spark forming voltage. 2. The main crystal structure of the anodic oxide film was anatase type as analyzed with thin-film X-ray diffractometery. 3. Needle-like hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals were observed on anodic oxide films after hydrothermal treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The precipitation of HA crystals was accelerated with increasing the spark forming voltage. 4. The precipitation of the fine asperity-like HA crystals were observed after being immersed in Hanks' solution at $37^{\circ}C$. The precipitation of HA crystals was accelerated with increasing the spark forming voltage and the time of immersion in Hanks' solution. 5. The Ca/P ratio of the precipitated HA layer was equivalent to that of HA crystal as increasing the spark forming voltage and the time of immersion in Hanks' solution.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the color stability, solubility, and surface characteristics of 3 calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) after immersion in different solutions. Materials and Methods: ProRoot white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine, and Endosequence Root Repair Material (ERRM) were placed in cylindrical molds and stored at 37℃ for 24 hours. Each specimen was immersed in distilled water, 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine, or 0.1% octenidine hydrochloride (OCT) for 24 hours. Color changes were measured with a spectrophotometer. Solubility was determined using an analytical balance with 10-5 g accuracy. The surface characteristics were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance, the Tukey test, and the paired t-test. Results: MTA exhibited significant discoloration in contact with NaOCl (p < 0.05). White precipitation occurred on the surfaces of Biodentine and ERRM after contact with the solutions, and none of the materials presented dark brown discoloration. All materials showed significant solubility after immersion in the solutions (p < 0.05), irrespective of the solution type (p > 0.05). The surface topography and elemental composition of the samples showed different patterns of crystal formation and precipitation depending on the solution type. Conclusions: All materials presented some amount of solubility and showed crystal precipitation after contact with the solutions. Biodentine and ERRM are suitable alternatives to ProRoot MTA as they do not exhibit discoloration. The use of OCT can be considered safe for CSCs.

  • The precipitation of calcium phosphate on implant surface has been known to accelerate osseointegration and to enhance osseous adaptation. The present study was performed to examine whether the precipitation of calcium phosphate on Ti-6Al-4V alloy could be affected by the immersion in NaOH solution and heat treatment. Ti-6Al-4V alloy plates of $15{\times}3.5{\times}1mm$ in dimension were polished sequentially from #240 to #2,000 emery paper and one surface of each specimen was additionally polished with $0.1{\mu}m$ alumina paste. Polished specimens were soaked in various concentrations of NaOH solution(0.1, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 10.0 M) at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours for alkali treatment, and 5.0 M NaOH treated specimens were heated for 1 hour at each temperature of 400, 500, 600, 700, $800^{\circ}C$. After the alkali and heat treatments, specimens were soaked in the Hank's solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 30days.The surface ingredient change of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was evaluated by thin-film X-ray diffractometer(TF-XRD) and the surface microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM), and the elements of surface were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The results were obtained as follows ; 1. The precipitation of calcium phosphate on Ti-6Al-4V alloy was accelerated by the immersion in NaOH solution and heat treatment. 2. In Alkali treatment for the precipitation of calcium phosphate on Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the optimal concentration of NaOH solution was 5.0 M. 3. In heat treatment after alkali treatment in 5.0 M NaOH solution, the crystal formation on alloy surface was enhanced by increasing temperature. In heat treated alloys at $600^{\circ}C$, latticed structure and prominences of calcium phosphate layer were most dense. On heat treated alloy surface at the higher temperature(${\geq}700^{\circ}C$), main crystal form was titanium oxide rather than apatite. The above results suggested that the precipitation of calcium phosphate on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy could be induced by alkali treatment in 5.0 M-NaOH solution and by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • 1. Introduction : The growth of membrane science was initiated by the invention of asymmetric membrane which can be formed by the technique known as phase inversion. The basic procedure of phase inversion involves casting a thin film of polymer solution onto a suitable substrate followed by immersion in a coagulation bath (quench step). Therefore, events occurring during the quench period, at which time solvent-nonsolvent exchange and eventual polymer precipitation take place, can play a controlling role in the determination of ultimate membrane structure.
