The present study investigated, both experimentally and numerically, the improvement of low-velocity impact damage resistance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates due to through-the-thickness stitching. First, we conducted drop-weight impact tests for stitched and unstitched laminates. The results of damage inspection confirmed that stitching did improve the impact damage resistance, and revealed that the improvement effect became greater as the impact energy increased. Moreover, the stitching affected the through-the-thickness damage distribution. Next, we performed FEM analysis and calculated the energy release rate of the delamination crack using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT). The numerical results revealed that the stitching affected the through-the-thickness damage distribution because the stitch threads had a marked effect on decreasing both the modes I and II energy release rate around the bottom of the laminate. Comparison of the results for models that contained delaminations of various sizes revealed that the energy release rate became lower as delamination size increased; therefore the stitching improved the impact resistance more effectively when the impact energy was higher.

In this research, a drop impact analysis of a fuel assembly in a research reactor is carried out to determine whether the fuel plate integrity is maintained in a drop accident. A fuel assembly drop accident is classified based on where the accident occurs, i.e., inside or outside the reactor, since each occasion results in a different impact load on the fuel assembly. An analysis procedure suitable for each drop situation is systematically established. For an accident occurring outside the reactor, the direct impact of a fuel assembly on the pool bottom is analyzed using implicit and explicit approaches. The effects of the key parameters, such as the impact velocity and structural damping ratios, are also studied. For an accident occurring inside the reactor, the falling fuel assembly may first hit the fixing bar at the upper part of the standing fuel assembly. To confirm the fuel plate integrity, a fracture of the fixing bar should be investigated, since the fixing bar plays a role in protecting the fuel plate from the external impact force. Through such an analysis, the suitability of an impact analysis procedure associated with the drop situation in the research reactor is shown.
Structural members commonly employed in marine and off-shore structures are usually fabricated from plates and shells. Collision of this class of structures is usually modeled as plate and shell structures subjected to dynamic impact loading. The understanding of the dynamic response and energy transmission of the structures subjected to low velocity impact is useful for the efficient design of this type of structures. The transmissions of transient energy flow and dynamic transient response of these structures under low velocity impact are presented in the paper. The structural intensity approach is adopted to study the elastic transient dynamic characteristics of the plate structures under low velocity impact. The nine-node degenerated shell elements are adopted to model both the target and impactor in the dynamic impact response analysis. The structural intensity streamline representation is introduced to interpret energy flow paths for transient dynamic response of the structures. Numerical results, including contact force and transient energy flow vectors as well as structural intensity stream lines, demonstrate the efficiency of the present approach and attenuating impact effects on this type of structures.
Internal defects, such as shrinkage during casting, cause stress concentrations and initiate cracking. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on the mechanical properties including the impact behavior. This study evaluates the effects of internal casting defects on the impact performance of A356 Al-alloy castings. The internal shrinkage defects in the casting impact specimen are scanned using an industrial Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, and drop impact tests are performed with varing impact velocities on the A356 casting aluminium specimen ($10mm{\times}10mm$ section area) in order to locate the fracture energy under an impact load. The specimens with defects with a diameter less than 0.35 mm exhibit equivalent fracture impact energies of approximately 32 J and those with a 1.7 mm diameter defect reduced the fracture impact energy by 35%.

The Objective of this work was to design Composite Antenna Structures (CAS) and investigate impact behavior of CAS which was various curvature. This term, CAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constants and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, microstrip antenna layers inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at the resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was. After making five kinds of curved CAS, which radii of curvature are flat, 200, 150, 100, 50 mm. The antenna performance changed in accordance with variation of curvature. The Reflection coefficient was independent of curvature but the gain decreased with the radius of curvature. The impact test equipment was Dyna-8250 drop weight tester. The impact characteristic in accordance with curvature is maximum absorb energy is same each other. The impact energy was 8.5 J. For various Impact energy test, five energy levels 3 J, 5 J, 7 J, 10 J, 20 J were used. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring the return loss and the radiation pattern. It was revealed that the performance of antenna was not related to the impact damage. Because the impactor did not damage the patch directly. CAS have good impact stability for the antenna performance.

The purpose of this study is to confirm the decreasing problems of residual bending strength, and the fracture machanism experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign Object Damage. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [O/sub 6//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o/]sub sym/ and four-interfaces [O/sub 3//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o//O/sub 3//sup o]/sub sym/. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the delamination area generated by impact damage is observed by using SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope). also, Thefracture surfaces obtained by three-point bending test were observed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Then, fracture mechanism was investigated based on the observed delamination area and fracture surface. The results were summarized as follows; (1) It is found that for the specimen with more interface, the critical delamination energy is increased while delamination-development energy is decreased. (2) Residual bending strength of specimen A is greater than that of Specimen B within the impact range of impact energy 1. 65J (impacted-side compression) and 1. 45J (impacted-side tension). On the other hand, when the impact energy is beyond the above ranges, residual bending strength of specimen A is smaller than that of specimen B. (3) In specimen A and B, residual strength of CFRP plates subjected to impact damage is lower in the impacted-side compression than in the impacted-side tension. (4) In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generat-ed near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.

Impacter tester was build of to evaluate the characterization of non-flamable Glass/phenol laminate plates under the low velocity impact. The damage of composite laminates are matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage for impact energy. In this study, this is to find impact properties of Glass/phenol in used in a forehead part of lighting subway. To determine impact damage characteristics which is made in a laminate, use the UT C-scan after- macrography. And then evaluated the reduction of strength in a rate of impact energy with CAI(Compression After Impact) test
Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to 23.62 J, was applied to the center of each plate supported at the boundaries. The unidirectional composite plate showed the worst impact resistance and broke completely into two parts; this was followed by the quasi-isotropic lay-up plate that was perforated by the impact. The cross-ply composite plate exhibited the best resistance to the low-velocity impact load; in this case, the impactor bounced back. Impact parameters such as the peak impact force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the impact resistant characterization of the composites made by different stacking sequences.

Recently, The PolyPropylene(PP) Foam used as Bumper and Helmet is well known as a protective material for products. In this paper, the effect of the density of PP foams on the absorption of the impact energy is implemented. The result of the experiment has revealed that the effect of the high-density PP foams is remarkably increased compared with that of the low-density PP foams. And it also shows that the absorption of the impact energy of PP foams are greatly influenced by the density in impact velocity(220cm/s). These results are expected to be utilized for the technique of manufacturing a optimum impact structure.
