  • The objective of research is to clarify the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation behaviors of high Mn austenitic steels. After measuring the internal stress in minimum creep rate at 873K, a transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation was performed to investigate the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation. The band width of effective stress and internal stress increased when the nitride precipitates distribute more densely. Fine nitrides disturbed the dislocation movement with pinning the dislocations and perfect dislocations were separated into Shockley partial dislocations by fine nitrides. Coarse nitrides disturbed the dislocation movement with climb mechanism.

  • The objective of research is to clarify the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation behaviors of high n austenitic steels. After measuring the internal stress in minimum creep rate state under applied stress of 236MPa at 873K, a transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation was performed to investigate the interaction between dislocations and precipitates during high temperature creep deformation. The band widths and values of internal stress increased when the nitride precipitates distribute more densely. Fine nitrides disturbed the dislocation movement with pinning the dislocations and perfect dislocations were separated into Shockley partial dislocations by fine nitrides. • The creep rates of polycrystalline $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$ and B2-ordered NiAl-Hf intermetallics decrease appreciably with the fine precipitation of the coherent disordered fcc Co-rich phase and $Ni_2AlHf$ phase. With B2-ordered NiAl containing $L2_1-Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates, transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and spherical precipitates revealed that the dislocations tend to be strongly attracted to the particle interfaces during the creep deformation. On the other hand, with $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$, the significance of the threshold stress is discussed based upon the transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and precipitates. The superdislocations produced during deformation tend to be strongly attracted and dissociated as they meet the coherent disordered precipitates because the anti-phase boundary energy in the disordered phase was zero. An extra force required to pull the dislocations out of the disordered particles during the creep deformation establishes the threshold stress which is beneficial for improving creep strength under lower stresses.

  • The morphology of deformation induced dislocations in polycrystalline $Ni_3$(Al, Cr) containing $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates has been investigated in terms of transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Fine Polyhedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ appeared in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution annealing at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After deformation at temperature below 973 K, typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the $M_{23}C_6$ particles. At higher deformation temperatures, the Orowan loops disappeared and the morphology of dislocations at the particle-matrix interfaces suggested the existence of attractive interaction between dislocations and particles. The change of the interaction modes between dislocation and particles with increasing deformation temperature can be considered as a result of strain relaxation at the interface bet ween matrix and particles.

  • In the present study, we examined the influence of prestrain on creep strength of Class M alloy(STS310S) and Class A(STS310J1TB) alloys containing precipitates. Prestrain was given by prior creep at a higher stress than the following creep stresses. Creep behaviour before and after stress change and creep rate of pre-strained specimens were compared with that of virgin specimens. Pre-straining produced the strain region where the strain rate was lower than that of a virgin specimen both for STS310J1TB and STS310S steels. The reason for this phenomenon was ascribable to the viscous motion of dislocations, the interaction between dislocations and precipitates in a STS310J1TB steel, and the interaction of dislocations with sub-boundaries in a STS310S steen which has the higher dislocation density and smaller subgrain size resulted from pre-straining at higher stress.

  • Strengthening mechanisms in an ordered intermetallic compound containing coherent precipitates of lower antiphase boundary energy than the matrix were investigated on the basis of the interaction between the deformation induced dislocations and the disordered precipitates in an $Ll_2$ ordered $Ni_3Al$-based alloy. Extra work was needed to pull out the dislocations from the precipitate, which was dependent on the difference in the antiphase boundary energy between the matrix and the precipitate, as well as the size and volume fraction of the precipitate. The strength of the $Ll_2$ ordered ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase containing fine precipitates of the disordered ${\gamma}$ phase was examined using the proposed model. The model can explain almost quantitatively the age hardening behavior of the $Ll_2$ ordered ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase.

  • The $Co_{3}Ti$ phase hardens appreciably by the fine precipitation of disordered fcc Co-rich phase upon aging after quenching from solution annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations revealed that the precipitates are platelet in shape, lying nearly parallel to the {100} planes of the $Ll_{2}$-ordered matrix, and perfectly coherent with the matrix lattice at the beginning of aging. The high temperature strength increases appreciably with the fine precipitation of disordered Co-rich phase over the whole temperature range investigated. TEM observations of the under-aged and deformed alloys revealed that superdislocations are pinned by precipitates indicating an attractive interaction between dislocations and precipitates. In the over-aged state, thin twins are introduced in the fcc Co-rich precipitates during deformation.

  • Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening found in $Ni_{3}Al$ based ordered alloys using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tilt experiments by the weak-beam method were made to obtain some information concerning the cross slip mechanism of the superlattice dislocation. The strength of ${\gamma}'-Ni_3$(Al,Ti) increases over the temperature range of experiment by the precipitation of fine $\gamma$ particles. The peak temperature where a maximum strength was obtained shifted to higher temperature. Over the whole temperature range, the interaction between dislocation and $\gamma$ precipitates is attractive. On the temperature range of 773 K to 973 K, the dislocations in ${\gamma}'$ matrix move on (111) primary slip plane. When the applied stress is removed, the dislocations make cross slip into (010) plane, while those in $\gamma$ precipitates remain on the (111) primary slip plane. The increase of high temperature strength in ${\gamma}'-Ni_3$(Al,Ti) containing $\gamma$ precipitates is due to the restraint of cross slip of dislocations from (111) to (010) by the dispersion of disordered $\gamma$ particles.

  • Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening discovered in $L1_2-ordered\;Ni_3(Al,Cr)$ containing 0.2 to 3.0 mol% of carbon using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ appeared in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution treatment at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After prolonged aging or by aging at higher temperatures, the $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates then adopt a rod-like morphology elongated parallel to the <100> directions. Deformation at temperature below 973 K, typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the $M_{23}C_6$ particles. At higher deformation temperatures, the Orowan loops disappeared and the morphology of dislocations at the particle-matrix interfaces suggested the existence of attractive interaction between dislocations and particles. The change of the interaction modes between dislocation and particles with increasing deformation temperature can be considered as a result of strain relaxation at the interface between matrix and particles.
