  • For several thousand years, Korea ginseng has been used as medicinal herb in the oriental countries. Korea is the ginseng suzerain and, for that reason, tile ginseng as a special crop In Korea has been exported to the World market since the era of the three Kingdoms. However, recently, the intermational market share of Korea ginseng products has been significantly reduced due to the mass production of ginseng from China and Canada. Besides, America with aggressive marketing strategy take the leadership in the international ginseng market. Therefore, it is necessary for Korea to know and understand world ginseng market mood and situation. The object of this study is to identify the actual consumption conditions and consumer perception of ginseng at the major consumptive countries in tile world. The findings of this study mean that the consumer behavior and perception of ginseng is difficult depending on country. At the result, it is expected that this study will be used to apply ginseng in various fields.

An Analysis of Import Demand for International Ginseng Market in Hong Kong (홍콩 국제 인삼시장의 수입수요 분석)

  • For several thousand years, Korean ginseng has been used as a medicinal herb in the oriental countries. Korea is the ginseng suzerain and, for that reason, the ginseng as a special crop in Korea has been exported to the world market since the era of the three Kingdoms. Hong Kong is the pivot of ginseng import from all of the world. In 1970s, Korea ginseng had a high market share (about 30%) in Hong Kong. However, recently, the market share of Korean ginseng in Hong Kong has been significantly reduced due to the mass production from China and Canada. Besides, America with aggressive marketing strategy takes the leadership in the international ginseng market in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is necessary for Korea to know and understand world ginseng market condition and situation in Hong Kong. The objective of this study is to identify the actual import situation at international ginseng market in Hong Kong. This study analyzed the ginseng import demand model which effected by several price variables from major importing countries at the international ginseng market in Hong Kong. The findings of this study show that the import price of Korean ginseng has an effect on the quantity of ginseng imported from other countries in Hong Kong. In addition, the quantity of ginseng imported from Korea in Hong Kong is influenced by the import price of ginseng from other countries. In conclusion, Korean ginseng plays an important role at the international ginseng market in Hong Kong.

  • Korean Ginseng has been recognized as a representative special product in Korea and over the world for a long time, since its quality is known to be superior to Chinese, North American Ginseng. However, the export volume of Korean Ginseng products has been diminishing since 1990 because the imports of low price Chinese Ginseng and the effective marketing policy on North American Ginseng. Therefore, this study is to suggest the competitiveness reinforcement strategies through analyses of the present state and transition of the international competitiveness in Korean Ginseng. This study conducts the comparative analysis of international competitive power of ginseng between Korea and other exporting countries. There are many kinds of saponin that are competitive from a quality profile. However, price competitiveness was very low. According to the result of analysis, this study suggest the competitiveness reinforcement strategies of Korean Ginseng as follows ; First, it is necessary to establish the ginseng plan for high-quality environmentally-friendly production. Second, Korean Ginseng producer should develop various consumer-oriented products according to purchasing power and taste of target market consumers. Third, export strategies must be established by finding out every importing country’s characteristics with regard its import, circulation and consumption of the Korean Ginseng. The use of this study is to forecast useful information to concerned organization for the future policies to the ginseng products in the international market.

Analysis of International Competitiveness of Chinese ginseng in Comparison with Korean ginseng (중국 인삼 산업의 국제 경쟁력 분석)

  • In this thesis we aim at analyzing international competitive power of Chinese ginseng in comparison with Korean ginseng and searching policy direction for Korea to compete Chinese ginseng industry. We summarized the research results as follows; First, we examine the structural change of ginseng industry of China. Second, we review the theories for international competitiveness and apply the method of analyzing competitiveness to ginseng industry. Third, we compared the international competitive power of the ginseng industry between China and Korea and found that Chinese ginseng, estimated by Revealed Comparative Advantage(RCA) at about 15, still remains high competitiveness in terms of cost and price but lowering price competitiveness recently. Based on the research results, we suggest export promotion strategies of the Korean ginseng as follows; 1) Korean government should enforce trade cooperation with China so as to register Korean root ginseng an importable medicine. 2) Korean ginseng producer should develop various products such as capsules, powders and etc. according to China's consumer purchasing power and taste. 3) Korean ginseng should be sold as an differentiated commodity so that it will contribute to building consumer loyalty to Korean ginseng, makes market share superior to other cheaper ginseng products in China. 4) In order to be effective brand marketing and product advertisement, there should be established reliable networks to process and distribute Korean ginseng products exclusively.

Market Segmentation Based on Attributes for the Purchase of Fresh Ginseng

  • This study aims to subdivide consumers by attributes determined mainly by consumers of fresh ginseng. It is to compare and analyze the characteristics by cluster, and to deduce the implications on distribution and marketing. For this study, a survey was conducted targeting 250 consumers of fresh ginseng. The factors were deduced through performing the exploratory factor analysis on the results of the survey, and the consumers of fresh ginseng were classified through cluster analysis. As a result of the study, the attributes considered for the purchase of fresh ginseng were condensed to the three factors: physical characteristic factor, safety factor, and cultivation indication information factor. With these as the standard, the consumers of fresh ginseng were subdivided into the three clusters: safety-oriented consumption type, label-centered consumption type, and high involvement consumption type. It was found that there were differences in demographic characteristics and attributes considered for purchase of fresh ginseng by cluster analysis. This study suggests the implications for revitalization of the fresh ginseng industry by subdividing consumers of fresh ginseng and suggesting the characteristics by cluster.

  • Panax ginseng is one of the most important medicinal plant in the Orient. The international trade of ginseng is increasing yearly. The disguise of Chinese and American ginseng into Korean ginseng became a problem in recent years in Korea and an abroad. Obviously, an effective method of authentication of Korean ginseng from others at a DNA level, is necessary for the healthy development of the ginseng market. In order to develop convenient and reproducible methods for the identification of Korean ginseng, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was applied within Panax species (Korean cultivatied and wild ginseng, Chinese wild ginseng, American cultivatied and wild ginseng).   • This study aimed to identify the issues in Korean ginseng exports through analyzing the ginseng market. Therefore, the study examined the current ginseng production status in South Korea and China, the major ginseng-producing countries in Northeast Asia, including cultivated areas, harvested areas, and production volumes. For South Korea, specific data on ginseng, such as average prices, operating costs, and production costs, were compiled to demonstrate the production competitiveness of Korean ginseng from a production perspective. Furthermore, as major ginseng-exporting countries, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong's export trends, including export quantities, export values, and export prices, as well as crucial export items and tariff rates, were summarized to showcase the export competitiveness of Korean ginseng. Additionally, this study aimed to understand the consumption patterns of ginseng in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan by presenting various cases and events in these countries. Based on information related to production, export, and consumption, this study identified obstacles in the ginseng export process, including market downturns, weakened price competitiveness of Korean ginseng, increased market share of competing products like Chinese and Western ginseng, a lack of promotion and marketing, and insufficient development and export of various ginseng products. In response, strategies for overcoming these obstacles were proposed, including diversifying exports, establishing effective production systems, enhancing quality and branding, strengthening promotion and marketing efforts, and developing various ginseng products.

Authentication of Korean Panax ginseng from Chinease Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius by AFLP analysis

  • Panax ginseng is one of the most important medicinal plants in the world. The international trade of ginseng is increasing yearly. The disguise of Chinese and American ginseng into Korean ginseng became a problem in recent years in abroad and Korea. An effective method to authenticate the Korean Panax ginseng from others at a DNA level is necessary for the healthy development of the ginseng market. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was applied to develop a method for the identification of Korean ginseng between Chinese ginseng and American ginseng. It is very difficult to detect the different polymorphic bands among Korean field cultivated ginseng, and between field and wild-cultivated ginseng. The genetic distance coefficient by AFLP analysis between field- and wild cultivated Korean ginseng was very low, 0.056. Whereas, polymorphic bands between Korean and Chinese wild-cultivated ginseng was significantly different. The genetic distance coefficient between wild-cultivated Korean and Chinese ginseng was 0.149. The genetic distance coefficients between the P. ginseng and P. quinquefolius were ranging from 0.626 to 0.666. These results support that the AFLP analysis could be applied to authenticate Korean P. ginseng from others Chinese P. ginseng and American ginseng (P. quinquefolius).

Characteristic of Pork Quality during Storage Fed with Ginseng By-Products (인삼부산물 급여 수준에 따른 돈육의 저장특성)

  • The "Ginseng Pork" produced by feeding ginseng by-products can be a compatible product in the sense of increasing pork consumption and developing functional food in the international pork market. This experiment was conducted to produce "Ginseng Pork" with emphasis on growth performance and meat quality. Experiments were conducted in which 30 Landrace heads were fed with bark of ginseng root(BGR) or heating extracts ginseng leaves and stem(HEG). WB-shear force was not different among the treatment groups until 15 days of ageing, but pork fed with the 6% BGR showed a higher shear force at 20 day of storage at 4$^{\circ}C$. Cooking loss showed lower value for the 9% BGR group compared with the control group. At 15 day, the 3% and 9% BGR groups showed lower cooking losses than control. Pork groups fed HEG showed a significantly(p<0.05) lower TBARS values after 5 days of storage. As for VBN analysis, the feeding groups of 9% BGR and 5.5% HEG had significantly lower values at 5 and 20 days when compared to the other treatment groups. It might be concluded that the accumulation of ginseng saponin in the pork resulted in retarding the ageing and inhibiting the oxidation.

A Study on the Perception of Health Functional Foods: Focusing on the Age Group of 20s (건강기능식품에 대한 20대 소비자의 인식 유형 연구)

  • This study attempted to examine the subjectivity of consumers of the MZ generation in their 20s on health functional foods, which have recently emerged as hot consumption items. A study was conducted using the Q methodology to examine the characteristics, meanings, and values of the younger generation in the health functional food market represented by red ginseng, vitamins, and probiotics. Using the QUANL analysis program, a total of 37 Q samples and 30 P samples were used in the study, and three types with unique tendencies were found. The first type discovered through this was named "YubiMuhwan(Forewarned, forearmed; 有備無患)", the second type was "Bansinbanui(half confident; 半信半疑)", and the third type was called "Silsagushi(empirical tradition; 實事求是)". Reflecting these attributes, various strategic ideas were presented for the classification of new characteristics and consumers in the health functional food market and promotion of sales.
