Sex Reversal Pattern of Wrasse in Jeju Coastal Waters

  • Eleven wrasse species inhabit the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. They are the target of leisure fishing and are considered good eating. We investigated the distribution of standard length (SL) by sex of wrasse in Jeju coastal waters for Halichores poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, Pseudolabrus japonicus, and Pteragogus flagellifera. A cross-section of the ovary showed the ovarian cavity and ovarian lamellae containing oocytes. A cross-section of the testis showed many lobules containing spermatogonia and spermatocytes. A cross-section of a gonad undergoing sex reversal showed the regression or reduction of oocytes and some spermatocytes located in the ovarian lamellae. A cross-section of a sex-reversed testis showed the primary structure of the ovary, with spermatocytes distributed in the epithelium of the lamellae, and reformed seminiferous ducts in the basement lamellae.   • The effective fracture toughness testing of materials intended for application in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices is required in order to improve understanding of how micro sized material used in device may be expected to perform upon the micro scale. ${\gamma}$-TiAl based materials are being considered for application in MEMS devices at elevated temperatures. Especially, in Alloy 4, both ${\alpha}_2$ and ${\gamma}$ lamellae were altered markedly in 3,000 h, $700^{\circ}C$ exposure. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. The materials were examined 2 types Alloy 4 on heat exposed specimen($700^{\circ}C$, 3,000 h) and no heat exposed one. Micro sized cantilever beams were prepared mechanical polishing on both side at $25{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and electro final stage polishing to observe lamellar orientation of same colony with EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction Pattern). Through lamellar orientation as inter-lamellae or trans-lamellae, Cantilever beam was fabricated with Focused Ion Beam(FIB). The directional behavior of the lamellar structure was important property in single material, because of the effects of the different processing method and variations in properties according to lamellar orientation. In MEMS application, it is first necessary to have a reliable understanding of the manufacturing methods to be used to produce micro structure.

Domain Wall Motions in a Near-Morphotropic PZT during a Stepwise Poling Observed by Piezoresponse Force Microscopy

  • In the present study, domain evolution processes of a near-morphotropic PZT ceramic during poling was studied using vertical piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). To perform macroscopic poling in bulk polycrystalline PZT, poling was carried out in a stepwise fashion, and PFM scan was performed after unloading the electric field. To identify the crystallographic orientation and planes for the observed non-$180^{\circ}$ domain walls in the PFM images, compatibility theory and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used in conjunction with PFM. Accurate registration between PFM and the EBSD image quality map was carried out by mapping several grains on the sample surface. A herringbone-like domain pattern consisting of two sets of lamellae was observed; this structure evolved into a single set of lamellae during the stepwise poling process. The mechanism underlying the observed domain evolution process was interpreted as showing that the growth of lamellae is determined by the potential energy associated with polarization and an externally applied electric field.

Modeling free vibration analysis of osteon as bone unite

  • This paper investigated vibrational behavior of the osteon as bone unit in the different situations. This study can lead to increase our knowledge of our body. In this paper free vibration of the osteon with considering it as composite material has been studied. The effect of numbers of lamellae and radius of those on natural frequency of osteon are subtle; while thickness of lamellae have decreasing trend on natural frequency of osteon. The presence of nerve and blood in haversian canal change trend of natural frequency, absolutely. Using the nonlocal strain gradient theory(NSGT) leads to effectiveness of scale parameter on equations of motion and the obtained results. The governing equations are derived by Hamilton's principles. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of various parameters on vibrational behaviour of osteon. The results can also be regarded as a benchmark in vibration analysis behavior of osteon as bone unite.

A study of plastic plateau disappearance in stress-strain curve of annealed polypropylene films during stretching

  • The changes of plastic plateau in the stress-strain curves of annealed polypropylene (PP) films during stretching under room temperature were followed and the corresponding melting properties and microstructure were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that during stretching the plastic plateau disappeared progressively with the increase of drawing ratio. At the same time, the endotherm plateau in DSC curves also disappeared progressively. The presence of the plastic plateau was attributed to the stretching of unstable crystalline part which was formed by tie chains around initial row-nucleated lamellae structure during annealing. During stretching, the unstable part was stretched and converted to bridges connecting separated lamellae. There was direct relationship between the disappearance of plastic plateau and pore formation.

Phytotherapy of experimentally induced gill inflammation with Aeromonas hydrophila infection in goldfish, Carassius auratus

  • Goldfish, Carassius auratus (wt 13 g) was intramuscularly infected with Aeromonas hydrophila (4.3x106 cfu / ml). Infected gills showed edematous lamellae with bacterial invasion into the capillaries and gill congestion on 12th day. By 24th day post-infection, histological analysis revealed irregular aggregates of macrophages in gill lamellae, large amount of mucus cells, gill lamellae edematous with bacterial invasion into capillaries, gill congestion and damaged gill epithelium with hyperplasia. Inflammation of the gill filament and hemorrhage globe was associated with the development of severe necrosis on the 36th day in the infected fishes. In infected and herbal treated fish the regenerative responses like fibrosis and infiltration of the leucocytes (neutrophils and monocytes) occurred on 12th day; moderate hypertrophy in the gills was noticed on the 36th day. These results suggest that phytotherapy ensures better protection and regenerative response against A. hydrophila infection in goldfish, C. auratus.

  • Histopathological changes and cadmium accumulations in the gills were investigated in crucian carp (Carassius auratus) exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5 mg/1 cadmium (Cd) concentrations for 25 days. After 25 days of exposure. cadmium accumulations increased in each of the different exposure concentrations. Histopathological changes in the gills of curcian carp exposed to cadmium included the acidification of mucous cell, the terminal clubbing of lamellae, the hyperplasia of epitherial cell and the curved of secondary lamellae. The similar histopathological changes were observed once the accumulations of cadmium reached the similar levels found in the present study with the different exposure schemes. Also the acidification of mucous cell in gills appeared when cadmium accumulations reached 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g and more. These results suggested that histopathological changes in the gills, an appearance of mucous cell acidification. be used to estimate the relation between toxic effect and cadmium accumulations in the gills.

  • In the proposed research plan, the effects of anisotropic and time-dependent mechanical properties on nanoindentation measurements of osteonic lamellae in a human cortical bone are investigated. The most popular method(Oliver-Pharr method) in nanoindentation data analysis is based on the assumption of elastic isotropy. Since cortical bone has exhibited anisotropy, it is necessary to consider the effects of anisotropy on nanoindentation measurement for cortical bone. By comparison with the contact area obtained from monitoring the contact profile in FEA simulations, the Oliver-Pharr method was found to underpredict or overpredict the contact area due to effects of anisotropy. The mount of error depended on the indentation orientation. The indentation modulus results and were also similar to moduli calculated from mathematical model. The Oliver-Pharr method has been shown to be useful for providing first order approximations in analysis of anisotropic mechanical properties of cortical bone, although the indentation modulus is influenced by anisotropy.

Spherulitic Morphologies of Poly(ethylene terephthalate), Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate), and Their Blend

  • The supermolecular structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN), and their blend were investigated with optical microscopy and small angle light scattering. With increasing the crystallization temperature, incomplete spherulitic texture was developed for the PET samples. At a high crystallization temperature of 220 $^{\circ}C$, the light scattering pattern represented a random collection of uncorrelated lamellae. The general morphological appearances for the PEN samples were similar to that of the PET. A notable feature was that the spherulites of the PEN formed at 200 $^{\circ}C$ showed regular concentric bands arising from a regular twist in the radiating lamellae. The spherulitic morphology of the PET/PEN blend was largely influenced by the changes of the sequence distribution in polymer chains determined by the level of transesterifcation. The increased sequential irregularity in the polymer chains via transesterification caused a morphological transition from a regular folded crystallite to a tilted lamellar crystallite.

New Report of Scolelepis geniculata (Annelida: Spionidae) in Korean Fauna

  • The spionid polychaete Scolelepis geniculata, originally described in Japan, is newly recorded in the Korean fauna. Specimens collected from the eastern and southern coasts of Korea between May 1999 and October 2002, stored in the invertebrate collection of the National Institute of Biological Resources, were examined based on their morphology. Scolelepis geniculata is morphologically most similar to S. yamaguchii from Japan and Korea but is distinguished by having branchiae separated from the notopodial lamellae in posterior chaetigers and notopodial prechaetal lamellae digitiform in anterior chaetigers instead of subtriangular. A detailed morphological description of S. geniculate, and an amended identification key to all Korean Scolelepis species is provided.
