Kinetics and Equilibrium Isotherm Studies for the Aqueous Lithium Recovery by Various Type Ion Exchange Resins

  • The characteristics of aqueous lithium recovery by ion exchange were studied using three commercial cation exchange resins: CMP28 (porous type strong acid exchange resin), SCR-B (gel type strong acid exchange resin) and WK60L (porous type weak acid exchange resin). CMP28 was the most effective material for aqueous lithium recovery; its performance was even enhanced by modifying the cation with $K^+$. A comparison to $Na^+$ and $H^+$ form resins demonstrated that the performance enhancement is reciprocally related to the electronegativity of the cation form. Further kinetic and equilibrium isotherm studies with the $K^+$ form CMP28 showed that aqueous lithium recovery by ion exchange was well fitted with the pseudo-second-order rate equation and the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum ion exchange capacity of aqueous lithium recovery was found to be 14.28 mg/g and the optimal pH was in the region of 4-10.

  • In the previous study, we reported the result to prepare lithium carbonate powder from various lithium-contained solution. Therefore, using the lithium hydroxide solution, it is conformed that the reaction could occur thermodynamically, and the recovery rate of lithium was 89.4 %. In this study, we carried out the experiment to prepare lithium carbonate powder through gas-liquid reactions with lithium hydroxide solution and CO2 gas using ultrasound energy. In case ultrasonic energy is applied to the reaction of lithium carbonate, the recovery rate of lithium at room temperature was approximately 83.8 %, and the recovery rate of lithium was greatly increased to approximately 99.9 % at 60℃ reaction temperature. And when ultrasonic energy is not applied, the particle size of lithium carbonate powder was 7.7 ㎛ in D50. But the particle size of lithium carbonate powder was significantly reduced to 8.4 ㎛ in D50 under the influence of ultrasonic.

Equilibrium and kinetic studies of an electro-assisted lithium recovery system using lithium manganese oxide adsorbent material

  • This study examined the influence of operating parameters on the electrosorptive recovery system of lithium ions from aqueous solutions using a spinel-type lithium manganese oxide adsorbent electrode and investigated the electrosorption kinetics and isotherms. The results revealed that the electrosorption data of lithium ions from the lithium containing aqueous solution were well-fitted to the Langmuir isotherm at electrical potentials lower than -0.4 V and to the Freundlich isotherm at electrical potentials higher than -0.4 V. This result may due to the formation of a thicker electrical double layer on the surface of the electrode at higher electrical potentials. The results showed that the electrosorption reached equilibrium within 200 min under an electrical potential of -1.0 V, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was correlated with the experimental data. Moreover, the adsorption of lithium ions was dependent on pH and temperature, and the results indicate that higher pH values and lower temperatures are more suitable for the electrosorptive adsorption of lithium ions from aqueous solutions. Thermodynamic results showed that the calculated activation energy of $22.61kJ\;mol^{-1}$ during the electrosorption of lithium ions onto the adsorbent electrode was primarily controlled by a physical adsorption process. The recovery of adsorbed lithium ions from the adsorbent electrode reached the desorption equilibrium within 200 min under reverse electrical potential of 3.5 V.

  • The demand for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries is continuously increasing. Recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries will be necessary in the future. This research investigated the effect of reaction temperature on the lithium recovery ratio from hydrogen reduction followed by water leaching from lithium-ion battery NCM-based cathode materials. As the reaction temperature increased, the weight loss ratio observed after initiation increased rapidly owing to hydrogen reduction of NiO and CoO; at the same time, the H2O amount generated increased. Above 602 ℃, the anode materials Ni and Co were reduced and existed in the metallic phases. As the hydrogen reduction temperature was increased, the Li recovery ratio also increased; at 704 ℃ and above, the Li recovery ratio reached a maximum of approximately 92%. Therefore, it is expected that Li can be selectively recovered by hydrogen reduction as a waste lithium-ion battery pretreatment, and the residue can be reprocessed to efficiently separate and recover valuable metals.

  • In this study, we carried out the experiment to prepare lithium carbonate powder through gas-liquid reactions with a lithium-containing solution and $CO_2$ gas using lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, and lithium sulfate. Thermodynamically, the carbonation reaction of a lithium-containing solution showed that aqueous reaction of lithium hydroxide occurs spontaneously, but aqueous reactions of lithium chloride and lithium sulfate does not occur spontaneously. In the case of lithium hydroxide solution, the recovery rate of lithium carbonate was 69.8 % at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), and increased to 89.4 % at $60^{\circ}C$. In the case of lithium chloride and lithium sulfate solution, lithium carbonate could be prepared using sodium hydroxide as an additive, but the recovery rates were 19.2 % and 16.7 %, respectively.

  • The present paper deals with the extractive separation and selective recovery of nickel and lithium from the sulfate leachate of cathode scrap generated during the manufacture of LIBs. The conditions for extraction, scrubbing and stripping of nickel from lithium were optimized with an aqueous feed containing $2.54kg{\cdot}m^{-3}$ Ni and $4.82kg{\cdot}m^{-3}$ Li using PC-88A. Over 99.6% nickel was extracted with $0.15kmol{\cdot}m^{-3}$ PC-88A in two counter-current stages at O/A=1 and pH=6.5. Effective scrubbing Li from loaded organic was systematically studied with a dilute $Na_2CO_3$ solution ($0.10kmol{\cdot}m^{-3}$). The McCabe-Thiele diagram suggests two counter-current scrubbing stages are required at O/A=2/3 to yield lithium-scrubbing efficiency of 99.6%. The proposed process showed advantages of simplicity, and high purity (99.9%) nickel sulfate recovery along with lithium to ensure the complete recycling of the waste from LIBs manufacturing process.

  • The demand for lithium has increased sharply due to the explosive increase in lithium secondary batteries for environment-friendly vehicles (EV: Electric Vehicle, HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle, PHEV: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). Traditionally, lithium has been produced mainly from lithium-containing minerals and brine, and recently it also has been recovered along with other valuable metals by recycling cathode materials of lithium secondary batteries. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed various recovering precesses of lithium from lithium-containing substances.

A Study on the Cobalt and Lithium Recovery from the Production Scraps of Lithium Secondary Battery by High Efficient and Eco-friendly Method (이차전지(二次電池) 제조공정(製造工程)스크랩으로부터 고효율(高效率) 親環境(친환경) 코발트(Co)와 리튬(Li)의 회수(回收)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • A study on the recovery of cobalt and lithium from Lithium Ion Battery(LIB) scraps has been carried out by a physical treatment - leaching - solvent extraction process. The cathode scraps of LIB in production were used as a material of this experiment. The best condition for recovering cobalt from the anode scraps was acquired in each process. The cathode scraps are dissolved in 2M sulfuric acid solution with hydrogen peroxide at $95^{\circ}C$, 700 rpm. The cobalt is concentrated from the leaching solution by means of a solvent extraction circuit with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid(D2EHPA) and PC88A in kerosene, and then cobalt and lithium are recovered as cobalt hydroxide and lithium carbonate by precipitation technology. The purity of cobalt oxide powder was over 99.98% and the average particle size after milling was about 10 lim. The over all recoveries are over 95% for cobalt and lithium. The pilot test of mechanical separation was carried out for the recovery of cobalt from the scraps. The $Co_3O_4$ powder was made by the heat treatment of $Co(OH)_2$ and the average particle size was about 10 ${\mu}m$ after grinding. The recovery was over 99% for cobalt and lithium each other and the purity of cobalt oxide was over 99.98%.

A study on the fabrication of high purity lithium carbonate by recrystallization of low grade lithium carbonate (저급 탄산리튬의 재결정화를 통한 고순도 탄산리튬 제조에 대한 연구)

  • Lithium carbonate recovered from the waste solution generated during the lithium secondary battery manufacturing process contains heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese. In this study, the recrystallization of lithium carbonate was performed to remove heavy metals contained in the powder and to increase the purity of lithium carbonate. First, the leaching efficiency of lithium carbonate according to pH in the aqueous hydrochloric acid solution was examined, and the effect on the recrystallization of lithium carbonate according to the equivalent and concentration of sodium carbonate was confirmed. As the equivalent and concentration of sodium carbonate increased, the recovery rate of lithium carbonate improved. And the SEM image showed that the crystal shape was changed depending on the reaction conditions with sodium carbonate. Finally, the high purity lithium carbonate of 99.9% or more was recovered by washing with water.
