  • In this paper, it is investigated that the limitation due to the asymmetry of optical power with respect to optical phase conjugator(OPC) in mid-span spectral inversion(MSSI) for compensating optical signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion(GVD) and nonlinearities generated in fiber by combining with lumped dispersion management(DM) technique into MSSI. Two kinds of lumped DM configuration(configuration A and configuration B) are considered and compared each other in this research. Configuration A consists of two dispersion compensating fiber(DCF) span positioned after transmitter and before receiver, respectively. Configuration B consists of two dispersion compensating fiber(DCF) span positioned before and after OPC placed at middle of total transmission link, respectively. It is confirmed that the transmission performances are more improved by the configuration A combined with MSSI than configuration B. Also, it is confirmed that the best performance of overall channels are obtained by making net residual dispersion(NRD) to have positive value in self phase modulation(SPM)-limited WDM transmission systems, irrelevant to the configuration of DM.

  • Optical link techniques compensating chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects, which affect distortion of optical signals, generated in single mode fiber are investigated through computer simulation and design rule of these link techniques is proposed for implementation of wideband and long-haul WDM ($24{\times}40$ Gbps) transmission system. The optical link consist of dispersion management (DM) compensating the cumulated dispersion through total transmission line and optical phase conjugation in middle of total transmission line for compensating distorted signals by frequency inversion. DM schemes considered in this research are lumped DM and inline DM. It is confirmed that eye opening penalty (EOP) of overall WDM channels are more improved than those in WDM transmission systems with only optical phase conjugator (OPC), if DM is additionally applied to these systems. And, design rule in both DM schemes are proposed by using effective residual dispersion range. It is confirmed that inline DM is better than lumped DM in the improving EOP of total WDM channels and in effective residual dispersion range.

  • The system performance of NRZ format in WDM transmission system with lumped dispersion management(DM) and optical phase conjugator(OPC) is compared with that of RZ format. It is confirmed that eye opening penalty(EOP) of both NRZ and RZ format in WDM transmission system having lumped DM combined with OPC are greatly improved than those in WDM system with only OPC. The optimal net residual dispersion(NRD) in the case of RZ format is decided to so small value that path-averaged dispersion coefficient become almost zero, while that in the case of NRZ format is decided to larger value, for the best improvement of overall WDM channels. It is also confirmed that EOP in the case of RZ format is more improved than that in the case of NRZ format in lumped DM with optimal NRD. This is resulted from that lumped DM combined with OPC suppress the signal distortion due to intrachannel four-wave mixing(IFWM) and intrachannel cross phase modulation(IXPM). Consequently, lumped DM combined with OPC proposed in this paper is effective technique to mitigate intrachannel nonlinearities in WDM transmitting RZ format.

  • We investigated analytically and numerically the occurrence of modulation instability in fibers with periodic changes both in dispersion and gain. Previously, it has been known that the modulation instability is suppressed in dispersion managed solitons where dispersion is managed in such a way that the local dispersion alternates between the normal and the anomalous regimes. In this work, we enhanced the advantage of the dispersion management scheme by additionally introducing proper gain/loss profiles in fibers. The gain/loss profile is given by $\Gamma(z)=0.5/D(z)*(dD/dz)$, where D(z) represents the dispersion profile. The fundamental gain spectra of the modulation instability in the dispersion and gain managed fibers have been derived analytically and confirmed by numerical calculation. Our investigation reveals that in the dispersion and gain fibers the modulation instabilities are always much more suppressed compared to the case with only dispersion managed. In practical dispersion management schemes, dispersion profiles show discontinuity. and thus. the corresponding gain/loss profiles tend to be finite. In these cases, the gain/loss profiles were approximated by lumped gains/losses of finite values. Our numerical calculations confirm that this approximation also works well.
