  • This paper studies market efficiency from a weak form aspect using opening and closing prices of the Shanghai stock exchange composite index (SSEC) and Shenzhen stock exchange composite index (SZSEC) under the expected return theory. Classical methods (autocorrelation and runs test) are used to examine the features of stock returns, and little evidence against mutual independence of returns is found. We predict daily returns of SSEC and SZSEC with AR(p) and VAR(p) models (in this paper, p = 5 is taken as a one-week lag) and perform a virtual experiment on two indexes based on the predicted value of daily returns from AR(p) or VAR(p) model. From the results of AR(p) and VAR(p) for two indexes, we attempt to find out how the market efficiency level changes when the information from the other market is under consideration as we check the market efficiency level in one market. We find that SSEC in 2014-2016 and SZSEC in 2015-2016 are inefficient from the result of autocorrelation, that SSEC in 2016 and SZSEC in 2013 are not efficient from the result of runs test, that the stock market is efficient except 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2017 in SSEC and 2005, 2016 and 2017 in SZSEC and that SSEC is more influenced by SZSEC but SSEC influences SZSEC less from the result of the virtual experiment.

  • The electric power industry throughout the world is undergoing considerable changes from the vertically integrated utility structure to the deregulated market. However, the deregulated electricity market is operated with respect to theory of economical efficiency, and therefore, the system operator requires data with fast contingency ranking for security of the bulk power system. This paper compares the weather dependant probabilistic risk index(PRI) with the system performance index for power flow in the IEEE-RTS. The system performance index for power flow presents the power system stability. This paper presents fast calculation method for determining contingency ranking using the weather dependant probabilistic risk index(PRI). The probabilistic risk index can be classified into the case of normal and adverse weather. This paper proposes calculation method using the probabilistic risk index in determining contingency ranking required for security under the deregulated electricity market.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine whether the change of settlement procedures have an impact on the distribution of day of the week effect in the UK and French markets or not. U.K and France changed their systems from fixed settlement date systems to fixed settlement lag systems Design/methodology/approach - This study adopted the data of the specific stock market indices such as FTSE 100 in the U.K market and FRCAC 40 in the French market, This study constructs a test of the differences in mean returns across the days of the week by computing the regression equations for each country index. Findings - First, this study found that the evolving settlement procedures in stock exchanges have an effect on stock return of day of the week. Second, long-run improvements in market efficiency may have diminished the effects of certain anomalies in recent periods. Improvements in market efficiency and evolving settlement systems may cause the disappearance of the weekend effect. Research implications or Originality - The Implication of this study is that recent settlement systems contributed to the disappearance of the weekend effect and explains improvements in market efficiency and diminishments of market anomaly. This study may be the first study which examines whether evolving settlement systems have an effect on the disappearance of the weekend effect in the market or not.

  • We analyze state-level matching efficiencies in the Indian labor market using stochastic frontier analysis. The key contribution of this research is the estimation of matching efficiencies at the state level because these can be used for a state-level measure of labor market conditions. Next, we explore the relationship between the estimated matching efficiencies and population density, labor market flexibility, and the Ease of Doing Business index, respectively. The results show that matching efficiency is heterogeneous across states with considerable variation in accordance with the regional diversity in India. However, we find that there is little relationship between the estimated matching efficiencies and the labor market conditions of interest, suggesting that other regional diversity affects matching efficiencies across states in India.

  • This study has classified development stages (Embryonic-Growth-Maturity) of mobile telecommunication industry based on Industry Life Cycle theory. There are two steps to be analyzed in this study, In the first step, cluster was investigated through cluster analysis using mobile density to categorize development stages of mobile telecommunication industry. In the second step, we compared on indexes of market structure, market efficiency and market performance to find out characteristics of each stage of development. The results are as follows. First, HHI is higher at embryonic stage than at growth and maturity stages, Second, ARPU(Average Revenue Per User) and RPM(Revenue Per Minute) are getting higher as the stages move on. Third, EBITDA margins, an index of market performance, is decreasing along the three stages. Finally, this study presents a clue to define the stage of development of mobile telecommunication industry and build a proper strategy for the market change.

  • Purposes of this study are to find difference in efficiency, productivity change and determinants on efficiency of life insurance industry between pre and post-execution of capital market law on the basis of pre(2005-2008) and post-execution(2009-2012) data. Main results of this research are as follows. First, there was no significant difference of mean value for efficiency between pre and post execution of capital market law. Second, difference of mean value for malmquist index between pre and post execution of capital market law was statistically significant at 5% level. This imply increase in productivity for post-execution of capital market law. Third, one of the important determinant for efficiency was the weight of life planner in both pre and post-execution of capital market law. The weight of life planner had significant positive effect on efficiency.

  • The execution of capital market law causes severe competition by promoting restructuring of financial industry. This study analyze efficiency and productivity change of the Korean Non-Life Insurance industry between pre-execution and pre-execution of capital market law using DEA model and Malmquist Index. Additionally, this study finds determinants of efficiency using tobit regression. The main results of this study can by summarized as follows. First, the efficiency with post-execution was increased comparing with pre-execution of capital market law significantly. Second, the productivity with post-execution was increased comparing with pre-execution of capital market law significantly. Third, significant determinants of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency are weight of life planner. operation rate of assets respectively. And significant determinant of scale efficiency are firm size, operation rate of assets, weight of life planner.

  • The scale of global FDI has been decreasing since 2016 due to the ongoing US-China trade dispute, the strengthening of FDI inflow screening regulations with concern over strategic technology leaks, and the spread of reshoring trends due to the reinforcement of national preferences. Eventually, the competition to attract FDI between countries is expected to become more intense. Therefore, in order to attract high-quality FDI for Korea that will contribute to the development of the national economy, it is pressing to evaluate and improve the domestic FDI attraction environment. This study aims to analyze which areas of Korea's economic and non-economic environments need improvement for gaining advantage amid the fierce competition to attract FDI between countries, by the relative comparison between Korea and the U.S., and based on the ranking indicated in key FDI attractiveness indices. As a result, improvement is needed in the following areas. First, according to IMD's "World Competitiveness Ranking 2020," Korea was inferior to the US in terms of business efficiency, productivity, finance and business legislation in terms of government efficiency. Second, according to INSEAD's "Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2020," Korea was inferior to the US in terms of internal openness, external openness, employability, lifelong learning, access to growth opportunity, and business and labor landscapes. Third, according to WEF's "Global Competitiveness Index 2019", Korea was inferior to the US in terms of product market, labor market, business dynamism and workforce skills.
