Permeability of pH-sensitive membranes grafted by Fenton-type reaction: An experimental and modeling study

  • Membrane modification by different concentrations of acrylic acid has been described. Grafting of acrylic acid to the surface of a polypropylene membrane was obtained by a Fenton-type reaction. Membrane permeability seemed to have been dependent on the value of pH in the solution. To explain tendency, a simple theoretical model was developed. The model incorporates explicitly statistical conformations of a polyacid chain grafted onto the pore surface. The charged capillary model with a varying diameter for porous membranes was then used to evaluate the permeability of the membrane. It has been shown both theoretically and experimentally that the permeability of a grafted membrane depends on the pH of the solution.

미토콘드리아막의 용질투과성에 미치는 양이온의 영향 (Effect of cation on solute permeability of mitochondrial membrane)

  • Mitochondria were isolated from Chlorella cells effects of cation on solute permeability of mitochondrial membrane were investigated using P$^{32}$ as a tracer. It was strikingly increased uptake of phosphate for NaCl, KCl, while evidently decreased phosphate uptake of mitochondrial membrane for $MgCl_2$, $CaCl_2$. This consider that uptake of monovalent cation were increased, but uptake of divalentcation were decreased for permeability of mitochondrial membrane as if the permeability of protoplasmic membrane.

  • 열유도상분리법(TIPS) 및 연신의 복합공정을 적용하여 막증류(Membrane distillation, MD)용 다공성 PVDF 중공사 분리막을 제조하였다. 분리막의 투과도를 증가시키기 위하여 분리막 투과도를 향상시킬 수 있는 성능인자들 중 분리막의 벽두께를 감소시키고자 하였다. 분리막의 두께를 감소시키기 위하여 분리막 제조 시 토출량을 감소시키고 중공 형성 시 주입하는 bore fluid 주입량을 증대시켰다. 토출량의 감소 및 bore fluid의 증가에 따라 벽두께는 감소하였고, 공기투과도와 수투과도는 크게 증가하였으며, 결과적으로 막증류 공정에 적용 시 투과플럭스도 증가하는 경향을 보여 주었다.

  • A biopharmaceutics drug classification system for correlation between in vitro dissolution and in vivo bioavailability is proposed based on recognizing that drug dissolution and gastrointestinal permeability are the fundamental parameters controlling the rate and extent of drug absorption. The objective of this study was to assess whether in vitro dissolution profiles of immediate-release beta-blocker tablets can be correlated with intestinal membrane permeability and/or in vivo bioavailability In vitro dissolution of the beta-blocker tablets was examined using KP VII Apparatus II methods at various pH. Intestinal membrane permeability was determined in vitro using the diffusion chamber method. Bioavailablity parameters were cited from literatures. The dissolution profiles did not accurately represent the in vivo bioavailablity However there were good correlations between intestinal membrane permeability and log P (noctanol/buffer). The correlations obtained in this study indicated that in vitro diffusion chamber method could be used to predict intestinal absorption in vivo.

수소 정제용 팔라듐 합금 분리막 연구 (A Study on the Palladium Alloy Membrane for Hydrogen Separation)

  • This study presented the effect of membrane thickness on hydrogen permeability. Microvoids on the surface of the membrane should not exist for the exact values of hydrogen permeability. Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membranes were fabricated by Ni powder sintering, substrate plasma pretreatment, sputtering and Cu reflow process. And this leaded to void-free surface and dense film of Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membrane. Hydrogen permeation test showed that hydrogen permeability increased from 2.7 to $15.2ml/cm^2{\cdot}min{\cdot}atm^{0.5}$ as membrane thickness decreased from 12 to $4{\mu}m$. This represented the similar trend as a hydrogen permeability of pure palladium membrane based on solution-diffusion mechanism.

  • Orally administrated drugs permeate the biological membrane by various transport mechanisms. The oral absorption potential is closely related to the physicochemical properties of the drug and interaction with the physiological factors surrounding the site of absorption. Assessment of the drug membrane permeability is an integral part of the early stage drug developmental process. Appropriate selection of the permeability screening method at the right stage of drug development process is important in achieving successful developmental outcomes. This review aims at introducing currently available in vitro and in vivo screening methods for the membrane permeability assessment.

랩스케일 정삼투실험을 통한 정삼투막의 수투과도 평가 (Evaluation of water permeability of forward osmosis membranes using osmotically driven membrane test)

  • Desalination is a key technology to overcome water shortage problem in a near future. High energy consumption is an Achilles' heel in desalination technology. Osmotically driven membrane processes like forward osmosis(FO) was introduced to address this energy issue. Characterizing membrane properties such as water permeability(A), salt permeability(B), and the resistance to salt diffusion within the support layer($K_{ICP}$) are very important to predict the performance of scaled-up FO processes. Currently, most of researches reported that the water permeability of FO membrane was measured by reverse osmosis(RO) type test. Permeating direction of RO and FO are different and RO test needs hydraulic pressure so that several problems can be occurred(i.e. membrane deformation, compaction and effect of concentration polarization). This study focuses on measuring water permeability of FO membrane by FO type test results in various experimental conditions. A statistical approach was developed to evaluate the three FO membrane properties(A, B, and $K_{ICP}$) and it predicted test result by the internal and external concentration polarization model.

Myricetin Disturbs the Cell Wall Integrity and Increases the Membrane Permeability of Candida albicans

  • The fungal cell wall and membrane are the principal targets of antifungals. Herein, we report that myricetin exerts antifungal activity against Candida albicans by damaging the cell wall integrity and notably enhancing the membrane permeability. In the presence of sorbitol, an osmotic protectant, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of myricetin against C. albicans increased from 20 to 40 and 80 ㎍/ml in 24 and 72 h, respectively, demonstrating that myricetin disturbs the cell wall integrity of C. albicans. Fluorescence microscopic images showed the presence of propidium iodide-stained C. albicans cells, indicating the myricetin-induced initial damage of the cell membrane. The effects of myricetin on the membrane permeability of C. albicans cells were assessed using crystal violet-uptake and intracellular material-leakage assays. The percentage uptakes of crystal violet for myricetin-treated C. albicans cells at 1×, 2×, and 4× the MIC of myricetin were 36.5, 60.6, and 79.4%, respectively, while those for DMSO-treated C. albicans cells were 28.2, 28.9, and 29.7%, respectively. Additionally, myricetin-treated C. albicans cells showed notable DNA and protein leakage, compared with the DMSO-treated controls. Furthermore, treatment of C. albicans cells with 1× the MIC of myricetin showed a 17.2 and 28.0% reduction in the binding of the lipophilic probes diphenylhexatriene and Nile red, respectively, indicating that myricetin alters the lipid components or order in the C. albicans cell membrane, leading to increased membrane permeability. Therefore, these data will provide insights into the pharmacological worth of myricetin as a prospective antifungal for treating C. albicans infections.

고분자 전해질 연료전지의 전해질 막 두께가 내구성과 성능에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Membrane Thickness on Durability and Performance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • 고분자 전해질 연료전지(PEMFC)의 고분자 막은 PEMFC 성능과 내구성에 많은 영향을 준다. 본 연구에서는 고분자막의 두께가 성능과 내구성에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 두께가 다른 Nafion 막의 수소투과도, 불소 유출 속도(FER), 수명, 성능을 측정했다. 막 두께에 따른 수소투과도, 수소투과도와 FER과의 관계, FER과 수명과의 관계로부터 막 두께와 수명의 관계를 얻었다. 막이 두꺼워지면 수소투과도와 FER이 작아지면서 수명이 증가하였다. 반면에 막이 두꺼워지면 막 저항이 증가하면서 성능은 감소하였다. 성능과 내구성을 동시에 만족시키는 막 두께 범위는 $25{\sim}28{\mu}m$였다.

Permeability of anion-exchange membrane for Cl- ions. Dialysis of hydrochloride acid in the presence of nickel chloride

  • Using a conventional two-compartment cell with stirrers the separation of an aqueous solution of HCl-$NiCl_2$ by an anion-exchange membrane Neosepta-AFN was investigated. The dialysis process was characterized by the permeability coefficient of the membrane towards to $Cl^-$ ions. This quantity was determined by the numerical integration of equations, which describe the time dependence of the total concentration of $Cl^-$ ions in compartment initially filled with stripping agent (water), combined with an optimizing procedure. The analysis of the experimental results showed that this permeability coefficient is a satisfactory characteristic for the process studied. It can be graphically correlated with the initial acid and initial salt concentrations in the compartment initially filled with acid+salt mixture.
