  • Properties of Precursor pitch derived from petroleum residue were studied physical and chemical analysis method for investigation of production of pitch fiber. For preparing of those precursor pitches it was carried out a temperature and time variation experiment i reactor. It was demonstrated the precursor pitch prepared in this study to have a similar properties to Ashland precursor pitch capable of bulk mesophase formation from the results of the basic analysis, that is, molecular weight distribution, coking yield, carbon content, chemical composition, etc.

  • A rigid polymer, cellulose triacetate (CTA) dissolved in a combination of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and methylene chloride (MC) solution are liguid crystalline above a certain concentration. A flexible polymer, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) also dissolves in TFA/MC, but does not form liguid crystal phase. Ternary solutions, CTA/PET/TFA-MC which CTA and PET were mixed in a same solvent TFA/MC (6/4 : v/v) showed phase separation and mesophase formation.

  • Effect on hydrothermal treatment of lamellar vanadium oxides was investigated and the formation of hexagonal and cubic mesophase was found. This lamellar materials were prepared by mixing of cetyltrimethylammonium-bromide and pH-controlled sodium metavanadate solution. Thermal method and UV/O₃treatment were applied to extract organic template. The structure of resulting product was studied by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • The infrared spectra were determined to discover the characteristics and properties of poff-, PV-, and cc-samples, and studied influence on the formation of mesophase or liquid crystal. The experimental results were as follows; a) Samples with long aliphatic side chain appear cracking texture on temperature forming liquid crystal. b) The fine isotropic microstructure appears in a heterogeneous material containing sulfur, 7.18 w%. c) In the size of molecular weight the lighter than 500 form liquid crystal. d) When poff-sample was treated at $400^{\circ}C$ aliphatic hydrocabon compounds decrease, presented well-oriented bulk liquid crystal.

  • A series of compounds were synthesized that contain varying number of mesogenic units, 4-n-butylazobenzene moiety, attached to the central benzene ring through ester bond. These compounds were subjected to thermal analysis on a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and also on a polarizing microscope. It was found from this study that the presence of mesogenic units in a multi-mesogenic compound does not guarantee for the compound to become mesomorphic and that the linear molecular shape is conducive to form a liquid crystalline phase.

  • (6-Cholesteryloxycarbonylpentoxypropyl)celluloses (CHPCs) with degree of esterification (DE) ranging from 2.25 to 2.91 were synthesized by reacting hydroxypropyl cellulose with 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride. The acrylic esters of CHPCs (CHPCEs) and their photocrosslinked films with liquidcrystalline order were also synthesized. The thermotropic properties of mesophase for both uncrosslinked and crosslinked samples and the swelling behavior of the crosslinked samples in acetone were investigated. The hydroxypropyl cellulose exhibited an enantiotropic cholesteric phas, while all the uncrosslinked cholesterylbearing samples exhibited a monotropic cholesteric phases; the 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride also showed a monotropic smectic phase. The hydroxypropyl cellulose formed a right-handed helix whose optical pitch (λ$\sub$m/) increases with temperature, whereas all the uncrosslinked derivatives farmed left-handed helices whose λ$\sub$m/'s decreased with temperature. The thermal stability of the mesophase and the magnitude of λ$\sub$m/ at the same temperature for both CHPCs and CHPCEs decreased with increasing DE. All the crosslinked samples, in constrast with CHPCEs, did not display reflection colors but exhibited an anisotropic swelling characteristic of crosslinked gel retaining liquid-crystalline order.

  • Two series of unsymmetric dimesogenic compounds containing a butylene or pentamethylene group as the flexible spacer were synthesized and their thermal and mesomorphic properties were studied. Mesogenic groups of the synthesized compounds consisted of a cholesteryl and an azobenzene group with lateral substituent. Chemical structures and mesomorphic properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and polarizing optical microscope (POM). All synthesized compounds, apart from $D5-OCH_3$, showed enantiotropic liquid crystal phases. Compounds having an even number of carbon atoms in the flexible spacer exhibited wide mesophase temperature ranges and high isotropic transition temperatures. Regarding the effect of lateral substituents, compounds with bulky substituents exhibited decreased mesophase temperature ranges and isotropic transition temperatures, while those with polar substituents showed the increased thermal stability of the smectic phase.

  • Coal-tar pitch, a feedstock which can be heat-treated to create graphite, is composed of very complex molecules. Coal-tar pitch is a precursor of many useful carbon materials (e.g., graphite, carbon fibers, electrodes and matrices of carbon/carbon composites). Modified coal-tar pitch (MCTP) was prepared using two different heat-treatment methods and their properties were characterized and compared. One was prepared using heat treatment in nitrogen gas; the other was prepared under a pressure of 350 mmHg in air. The MCTPs were investigated to determine several properties, including softening point, C/H ratio, coke yield, formation of anisotropic mesophase and viscosity. The MCTPs were subject to considerable changes in chemical composition due to condensation and polymerization in the used-as-received coal-tar pitch after heat-treatment under different conditions. The MCTPs showed considerable increases in softening point, C/H ratio, and coke yield, compared to those of as-received coal-tar pitch. The MCTP formed by heat-treatment in nitrogen showed isotropic phases below $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h of soaking time. However, MCTP heat-treated under high pressure (350 mmHg) showed isotropic phases below $300^{\circ}C$, and showed anisotropic phases above $350^{\circ}C$, for 1 h of soaking time. The viscosity of the MCTPs increased with increase in their softening points.

  • Irradiation-induced damage of binderless nanoporous-isotropic graphite (NPIG) prepared by isostatic pressing of mesophase carbon microspheres for molten salt reactor was investigated by 3.0 MeV He+ irradiation at room temperature and high temperature of 600 ℃, and IG-110 was used as the comparation. SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum are used to characterize the irradiation effect and the influence of temperature on graphite radiation damage. After irradiation at room temperature, the surface morphology is rougher, the increase of defect clusters makes atom flour bend, the layer spacing increases, and the catalytic graphitization phenomenon of NPIG is observed. However, the density of defects in high temperature environment decreases and other changes are not obvious. Mechanical properties also change due to changes in defects. In addition, SEM and Raman spectra of the cross section show that cracks appear in the depth range of the maximum irradiation dose, and the defect density increases with the increase of irradiation dose.
