  • A metallic microcell UO2 pellet has a microstructure where a metal wall is connected to overcome the low thermal conductivity of the UO2 fuel pellet. It has been verified that metallic microcell fuel pellets provide an impressive reduction of the fuel centerline temperature through a Halden irradiation test. However, it is difficult to predict the effective thermal conductivity of these pellets and researchers have had to rely on measurement and use of the finite element method. In this study, we designed a unit microcell model using a thermal resistance circuit to calculate the effective thermal conductivity on the basis of the microstructure characteristics by using the aspect ratio and compared the results with those of reported metallic UO2 microcell pellets. In particular, using the thermal conductivity calculated by our model, the fuel centerline temperature of Cr microcell pellets on the 5th day of the Halden irradiation test was predicted within 6% error from the measured value.

  • Four kinds of plasma blacks were prepared by plasma pyrolysis under various metallic catalysts coated on honeycomb, and investigated the catalytic effect on the characteristics of the plasma blacks prepared under plasma pyrolysis condition. Pt, Pt-Rh, and Pd catalysts were employed as active materials to prepare the plasma blacks. In the experimental range studied, the metallic catalysts influenced on surface area, particle size, surface oxygen content and electrical conductivity of the plasma blacks prepared. It was showed that more dense particle of plasma blacks were prepared under existence of metallic catalysts. Presence of the metallic catalyst reduces the electrical resistivity of plasma blacks due to the decrease in the amount of oxygen functional groups. The highest electrical conductivity of plasma black was observed in the Pt catalyst and then followed by those Pt-Rh, Pd and bare cordierite honeycomb.

  • In this work, we employed an electroless nickel plating on glass fibers in order to enhance the electric conductivity of fibers. And the effects of metal content and plating time on the conductivity of fibers were investigated. From the results, island-like metal clusters were found on the fiber surfaces in initial plating state, and perfect metallic layers were observed after 10 min of plating time. The thickness of metallic layers on fiber surfaces was proportion to plating time, and the electric conductivity showed similar trends. The nickel cluster sizes on fibers decreased with increasing plating time, indicating that surface energetics of the fibers could become more homogeneous and make well-packed metallic layers, resulting in the high conductivity of Ni/glass fibers.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effect of type and volume fraction of fiber on the electrical conductivity and shielding effectiveness of cementitious composites. The large specific surface area of amorphous metallic fiber, as well as the high number of fibers per unit weight, provided an advantage in the formation of conductive path. As the result, the electrical conductivity of amorphous metallic fiber was evaluated to be higher, and the shielding effectiveness was also higher. However, the shielding effectiveness according to electrical conductivity was confirmed to have a threshold point, and further research is needed to improve it.

  • This study introduces the calculation model of ionization composition and electrical conductivity for metallic plasma for practical application to modeling and simulation of modern electrical detonators. The present model includes the correction for non-ideality of dense plasma conditions which are expected in electrical explosion of bridge in detonators. The computational results for copper plasma show favorable agreement with experimental data for a wide range of plasma temperature and high density conditions and the model is proper for detonator modeling with good prediction accuracy.

  • In this study, it evaluate the electromagnetic pulse shielding performance of amorphous metallic fiber reinforced cement composite with other steel fiber reinforced cement composite. Hooked-ended steel fiber, smooth steel fiber and amorphous metallic fiber were reinforced 2.0 vol.% in cement composites respectively. The electromagnetic pulse shielding performance was evaluated by MIL-STD-188-125-1. As a result, shielding performance of amorphous metallic fiber reinforced cement composite was higher than Hooked-ended and smooth steel fiber reinforced cement composites. In addition, the relationship between the electrical conductivity and the electromagnetic pulse shielding performance of the cement composite was confirmed.

  • The effect of Mn additive on the thermoelectric properties of Fe-Si alloys prepared by a RF inductive furnace was investigated. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured as a function of temperature under Ar atmosphere to evaluate their applicability to thermoelectric energy conversion. The electrical conductivity of the specimens increased with increasing temperatures showing typical semiconducting behavior. The electrical conductivity of Mn-doped specimens are higher than that of undoped specimens and increased slightly with increasing the amount of Mn additive. This must be due to the difference in carrier concentration and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi(The ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi was detected in spite of 100 h annealing treatment at $830^{\circ}C$). And metallic conduction increased slightly with increasing the amount of Mn additive. On the other hand, Mn-doped specimens showed the lower Seebeck coefficient due to metallic phase. The power factor of Mn-doped specimens are higher than that of undoped specimens and would be affected by the electrical conductivity more than Seebeck coefficient.

The electrical conductivity of the specimens increased as the temperature increased, showing typical semiconducting behavior. The electrical conductivity of Co-doped specimens was higher than that of undoped specimens and increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. Additionally, metallic conduction increased slightly as the amount of Co additive increased. On the other hand, Co-doped specimens showed a lower Seebeck coefficient due to the metallic phase. • The purpose of this study is to measure the electrical conductivity of cementitious composites as an early step to obtain shielding performance by mixing various type of steel fiber into cementitious composites, the main building material of protection facility, to shield electromagnetic pulse (EMP) damage. Fiber such as conductors as amorphous metallic fiber, hooked steel fiber, and smooth steel fiber are mixed into cementitious composites to give electrical conductivity and measure the impedance of concrete using LCR meter. By doing this, the electrical conductivity of each type of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) is compared.

  • The time-resolved photoexcitation dynamics of electrical conductivity of the magnetic organic superconductor ${\lambda}-(BETS)_2Fe_{0.45}Ga_{0.55}Cl_4$ has been studied with a nanosecond visible laser pulse at its three different phases, i. e., metallic phase, superconducting phase and insulating phase. A transient increase of the resistance is induced by photoirradiation at all the temperatures measured for all three phases, but the decay profile shows a significant temperature dependence. The relaxation rate in the metallic and insulating phase are different from each other, and the decay time is relatively faster and almost constant in the metallic phase. However, a prolongation of the relaxation time is observed at temperature just around the narrow superconducting phase. Nonbolometric (nonthermal) origin of the observed photoresponse of the electrical conductivity is confirmed in the superconducting phase.
