  • A circulating fluidized bed (CFB) has been used in various chemical industries because of good heat and mass transfer. In addition, the methanol to olefins (MTO) process requiring the CFB reactor has attracted a great deal of interest due to steep increase of oil price. To design a CFB reactor for MTO pilot process, therefore, we has examined the hydrodynamic properties of spherical catalysts with different particle size and developed a correlation equation to predict catalyst holdup in a riser of CFB reactor. The hydrodynamics of micro-spherical catalysts with average particle size of 53, 90 and 140 mm was evaluated in a $0.025m-ID{\times}4m-high$ CFB riser. We also developed a model described by a decay coefficient to predict solid hold-up distribution in the riser. The decay coefficient developed in this study could be expressed as a function of Froude number and dimensionless velocity ratio. This model could predict well the experimental data obtained from this work.

  • With the continuous increase of energy demand, low-grade coal is regarded as one of new energy sources. However, due to the high water content, the utilization efficiency of low-grade coal is not good to be used in recent conversion plants. Therefore, it requires a drying process to lower the water content in low-grade coals. Although a variety of drying experiments were conducted, drying characteristics in accordance with the pressure change has not been progressed. In this study, the flash drying characteristics of low grade coal with high moisture content (21.5 wt%) were determined in a pressurized micro-riser. The effect of operation conditions such as pressure (1-40 bar), dryer temperature ($200-600^{\circ}C$), and tube length (2-6 m) on drying ratios were investigated.

  • Characteristics of holdup and flow behavior of fluidized solid particles were investigated in a liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed ($0.102m{\times}3.5m$). Effects of liquid velocity ($U_L$), particle size ($d_P$) and solid circulation rate ($G_S$) on the solid holdup, overall particle rising velocity, slip velocity between liquid and particles and hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate in the riser were examined. The particle holdup increased with increasing $d_P$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $U_L$. The overall particle rising velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $d_P$. The slip velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $d_P$ but did not change considerably with $G_S$. The energy dissipation rate, which was found to be closely related to the contacting frequency of micro eddies, increased with increasing $d_P$, $G_S$ or $U_L$. The solid particle holdup was well correlated with operating variables such as $U_L$, $d_P$ and $G_S$.

  • Recently, an air-lift bio-reactor operated by micro bubbles has been utilized to product hydrogen fuel. To enhance the performance, characteristics of hydrodynamics inside the bio-reactor were analyzed using a numerical simulation for two-phase flow. An Eulerian model was employed for both of liquid and gas phases. The standard k-ε model was used for turbulence induced by micro bubbles. A Population Balance Model was employed to consider size distribution of bubbles. A hollow cylinder was introduced at the center of the reactor to reduce a dead area which disturbs circulation of CO bubbles. An appropriate diameter of the draft tube and hollow cylinder were optimized for better performance of the bio-reactor. The optimum model could be obtained when the cross-sectional area ratio of the hollow cylinder to the reactor, and the width ratio of the riser to the downcomer approached 0.4 and 3.5, respectively. Consequently, it is expected that the optimum model could enhance the performance of the bio-reactor with the homogeneous distribution and higher density of CO, and more effective mixing.
