Purpose: This study examined the relationship among stressful life events, mindfulness and depression, and explored the mediating role of mindfulness between stressful life events and depression in nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken. A sample of 120 nursing students participated in the study. The self-reported measures of stressful life events (revised life stress scale), depression (DASS-D) and mindfulness (MAAS) were adopted in April, 2017. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Mediation analysis was performed using the Baron & Kenny method and Sobel test. Results: The mean scores of stressful life events, mindfulness and depression were 39.50, 77.03, and 8.18, respectively. Higher levels of stressful life events were associated with lower mindfulness (r = -46, p < .001) and higher depression (r = -44, p < .001), and mindfulness was negatively associated with depression (r = -72, p < .001). Mindfulness showed full mediation in the relationship between stressful life events and depression. Conclusion: Stressful life events influenced the nursing students' depression via the full mediating effect of mindfulness. Promoting mindfulness plays an important role in reducing depression in nursing students. Therefore, it is important to develop a mindfulness program or use a mindfulness-based stress reduction program (MBSR) for nursing students.
Sleep disturbance is a common health complaint affecting an estimated 10-25% of the general population. Pharmacotherapy is a traditional treatment and cognitive behavioral therapy is well demonstrated as an efficacious treatment for insomnia. There is a growing interest in the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation for sleep disturbed populations. Mindfulness involves focused, purposeful, nonjudgmental attention to a particular idea. In clinical application of mindfulness practice, mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy are used widely. Clinical trials support the effectiveness of meditation for the treatment of insomnia. The aim of this article is to review the effect of mindfulness meditation on insomnia.
Mindfulness has been widely researched in mental, physical health, and healthy populations. The effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions have also been demonstrated in research studies. This report reviews the research on mindfulness based interventions currently employed for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mindfulness-based theories postulate that symptoms of PTSD are developed and maintained by experiential avoidance and non-mindful behaviors. Recent emerging work indicates that mindfulness based interventions, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, may improve the symptoms of PTSD. Further advances are needed to gain a better understanding of the ability of mindfulness based interventions to target specific symptom dimensions of PTSD and the psychological/neurobiological mechanisms of actions underlying these interventions.
The purpose of this study to analyze the effect of Mindfulness on the Therapeutic Relationship using System Dynamics. The biggest factor in psychotherapy's treatment outcome is the Therapeutic Relationship including the quality of the therapist (empathy, therapeutic presence) and therapy alliance. Mindfulness practice can facilitate the therapeutic relationship. In order to analyze the therapeutic relationship, I measure FFMQ(Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire), Empathy, Therapeutic presence and Therapy alliance. Participants consist of 55 mental health professionals (doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, social worker). The result of the study will be explained. First, with the causal loop diagram research, I analyze how mindfulness can influence the quality of therapist and therapy alliance. The result of literature research indicate that mindfulness increase therapist's empathy, congruence, therapeutic presence, flow, therapy alliance. And then mindfulness reinforces the ability of therapeutic relationship. Secondly, through the real data research and simulation analysis, mindfulness practicing period (year and hour a day) of therapist is studied. The result of the therapist experiencing mindfulness practice period is over 5 years and the daily hours of practice is 2 - 2.5 hours in order to enhance the therapeutic relationship. After reviewing the result of the research it is important to understand the practicing period and daily practice of mindfulness. With daily practice and time, the level of mindfulness will increase and influence positively the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client.
The application of mindfulness is increasing in corporation for business innovation. However, the influence of mindfulness has not been confirmed for employee in detail. Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention in the present. We often experience uncertainty abounds about what the information technology is, how well it works in the process of using information technology. According to the definition of mindfulness, mindfulness can deepen employee's thoughts and understanding of information technology and will provide a clue to the solution of the issue. This study focusses on impact of mindfulness on IT usage behavior, particularly on IT continuance usage. Research question of this study is whether mindfulness impact perceived factors related to IT continuance usage. The study of relationship between IT and mindfulness will have meaningful results because both IT and Mindfulness are aimed at corporate innovation. Based on most recent theory in IT continuance usage, called by Decomposed Expectation-Disconfirmation Model, we established hypotheses and examined the impact of mindfulness on perceived factors in process of IT continuance usage. For empirical analysis, we collected 303 employee samples and conducted Structural Equation Modeling for path analysis. We showed that mindfulness has a positive impact on perceived usefulness, usability and usefulness confirmation, usability confirmation. We also confirmed that antecedent of satisfaction is perceived usefulness, perceived usability and usefulness confirmation, usability confirmation, and satisfaction is the cause of IT continuance usage. We suggested academic and practical implication based on empirical analysis results. In academic perspective, we found the role of mindfulness in process of IT continuance usage. From practical point of view, we suggest to use of mindfulness program for IT continuance usage in corporation.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between child care teachers' mindfulness, burnout, and sensitivity. Also, the effects of child care teachers' mindfulness on teacher sensitivity, including the mediating effects of burnout, were investigated. Methods: A total of 263 child care teachers who work in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon participated in this study. Data were analyzed by correlations and regressions using SPSS 21.0. Results: First, there were significant correlations between child care teachers' mindfulness, burnout and teacher sensitivity. Second, the relationship between mindfulness and teacher sensitivity was partially mediated by burnout. To be specific, mindfulness not only had a direct effect on teacher sensitivity, but also had an indirect effect on teacher sensitivity through burnout. Among the three dimensions of burnout, the decrease of personal accomplishments had the biggest significant mediation effect on the relationship between mindfulness and teacher sensitivity. Conclusion/Implications: In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of mindfulness in reducing burnout and enhancing teacher sensitivity toward children. Also, this research has implications for future research regarding the mindfulness of child care teachers and offers a foundation for the development of mindfulness training programs for child care teachers.
Purpose - This study investigated the effect of the negative affect on compulsive buying and the interaction effect of the negative affect depending on the level of mindfulness. Compulsive buying is defined as chronic, repetitive purchasing that becomes an overlearned and automatic way to cope with negative feelings, and compulsive buyers may be particularly susceptible to cognitive narrowing when shopping. Mindfulness may be defined as a coordinative regulatory process to increase the level of attention by recognizing the present experiences non-judgmentally. Hence, mindfulness can be related with negative psychological results such as general mental distress, especially compulsive buying. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between compulsive buying and mindfulness. In another words, this study investigated the effect of the internal regulatory mechanism (that is, mindfulness) on the mental disorder resulting from negative affect in the area of consumption (that is, compulsive buying). Research design, data, and methodology - One hundred and twenty-five college students were recruited for this study. The subjects were classified into two groups according to the degree of the negative affect (High Negative Affect Group vs. Low Negative Affect Group) by the mean value of negative affect (=2.47). The subjects were classified into two other groups according to the degree of mindfulness (High Mindfulness Group vs. Low Mindfulness Group) by the mean value of mindfulness (= 3.47). To analyze the effect of negative affect on compulsive buying, the degree of compulsive buying of the High and Low Negative Affect Groups were compared. To examine the moderating effect of mindfulness by using factorial design, the interaction effect of the negative affect (High vs. Low) and the mindfulness (High vs. Low) were analyzed. Results - The degree of the compulsive buying was higher when the degree of the negative affect was higher than lower (3.06High Negative Affect Group vs. 2.87Low Negative Affect Group, p=.014). The difference in the degree of the compulsive buying was larger when the degree of the mindfulness was lower than higher. In other words, the interaction effect of the negative affect and the mindfulness on the compulsive buying could be found (F(1,124)=10.098, p<.01). Conclusions - The results of the current study showed that the compulsive buying is influenced by the negative affect and that the effect of the negative affect on the compulsive buying varies depending on the level of the mindfulness. These results can be interpreted to imply that consumers who are in a state of high mindfulness pay attention to every minute of experience and activate the coordinatory function and that, eventually, habitual and reflective responses such as compulsive buying are restricted. It is concluded that consumers' mindfulness can facilitate the self-regulatory responses and alleviate the influence of negative affect on compulsive buying. Based on these results, the theoretical and practical implications of this research were discussed and the limitations and future research areas were suggested.
Purpose: This study was designed to explore the relationship of depression with stress, anxiety and mindfulness in nursing students in 2010. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used and data was collected through structured questionnaires. Depression, stress, anxiety, and mindfulness were measured by using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) and the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: A total of 131 nursing students participated in this study. Depression was positively associated with stress (r=.81, p<.001) and anxiety (r=.76, p<.001), and negatively associated with mindfulness (r=-.73, p<.001). Multiple regression analyses showed that in different type of residence, anxiety and mindfulness were statistically significant predictors of depression with explanatory power of 67%. Conclusion: When nurse instructors manage depression among nursing students, the strategies need to address stress, anxiety, and mindfulness. This study may help nursing students to better manage their depression.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the Validity and Reliability of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), using mindfulness meditation performed before and after. Methods: The study was conducted with 87 students at the university of Korean medicine who provided informed consent. The demographic characteristics and FFMQ were analyzed with regard to their validity and reliability on the effect of mindfulness using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, IBM, United States of America) 21.0 Version. Results: 1. The reliability and factor analysis of FFMQ : The five sub-factors of mindfulness showed strong internal consistency (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ >.70). 2. Correlation analysis of the sub-factors in pre-FFMQ showed a positive correlation between Nonreactivity and Awareness, Nonreactivity and Scribing, Nonreactivity and Nonjudging, Nonreactivity and Total score, Observing and Scribing, Observing and Total score, Awareness and Nonjudging, Awareness and Total score. 3. Correlation analysis of the sub-factor in post-FFMQ showed a positive correlation between Scribing and Nonreactivity, Scribing and Observing, Scribing and Awareness, Awareness and Nonjudging. In contrast, Observing had a negative correlation with Nonjudging. Conclusions: The results of the study reconfirmed that FFMQ was useful as a reliable and valid tool for measuring mindfulness meditation.
Objective : This study aimed to investigate the effect of a 5-minute short mindfulness intervention on emotional regulation and cognitive improvement compared to self-awareness intervention. Methods : A total of 40 participants were randomly assigned and divided into a mindfulness group and a self-aware group. Participants responded to Korean Version of Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (K-PANAS), and Korean version of Toronto Mindfulness Scale (K-TMS) to confirm prior homogeneity. Both groups performed processing according to each group after completing sentences related to themselves for self-focusing. Afterwards, the participants performed the Emotional Attentional Blink (EAB) task as a behavioral measure, and responded to K-PANAS and K-TMS post hoc. Results : The mindfulness group showed lower negative emotions in the K-PANAS than the self-awareness group. The mindfulness group showed higher accuracy than the self-awareness group in negative stimuli presented in the 200 ms condition and neutral stimuli presented in the 800 ms condition. However, there was no difference between groups in K-TMS. Conclusion : The study suggests that mindfulness and self-awareness have different emotion regulation strategies in negative stimuli. Additionally, 5-minute mindfulness intervention was relatively beneficial to improve cognitive function.
