  • Minute papers are brief papers written at the end of a lecture in response to one or two questions posed by the instructor. The answers are discussed briefly at the beginning of the next lecture. We used minute papers to follow students' understanding and response to lecture demonstrations in an introductory general chemistry course. An analysis of these minute papers suggest that the following characteristics are important, when using demonstrations as teaching aids. 1) The purpose of a demonstration should be stated as explicitly as possible. 2) Instructors should be explicit about what is happening and what students should be looking for. 3) Demonstrations should be kept as simple as possible, perhaps illustrating one concept. Finally, we note that students believe that the visual component of demonstrations enhances their comprehension of chemistry concepts.

  • For NIR measurements of papers normally diffuse reflectance accessories are used which can provide a large sampling area. The in-line process control FT-NIR spectrometer MATRIX-E enables the contactless measurement of paper samples of low silicone coat weights on label-stocks in a paper converting factory. For this study concentrations of silicone between 0 and 2 g/㎡ on various paper substrates were included in a quantitative method. The aim was to achieve an absolute value for the deviation from the target value of 1 g/㎡ during continuous movement of the paper with velocities around 400 m/minute. Influences from the uncoated paper type due to supplier, color, opacity, area densities, pre-coating as well as different compounds of the agent silicone were investigated and it was found that all these papers can be represented in one PLS-model. Especially the fact that silicone as an element is present in clay coated papers is of no consequence to the measurements with MATRIX-E. Moreover during in-line installations the variation of the moisture contents in the moving paper due to variable machine velocities as well as the reflecting material of the cylinder have to be considered. It is shown that the result of the in-line calibration has the same prediction ability compared to lab scale results (Root Mean Square Error of Cross-Validation RMSECV = 0.034 g/㎡).

  • The purpose of this study was to the observe effects of the various bleaching agents on blood clot. Absorbent papers(N9.5) were coated with O type blood and were dried in shadow for 72 hours. Bleaching agents used were 5% NaOCl 30% $H_2O_2$, saturated solutions of $NaBO_3$ $4H_2O$, $Ca(OCl)_2$ and $Na_2O_2$ at $20^{\circ}C$. After the specimens, blood cloted papers were dipped in 10CC of solution for 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours and 24 hours, specimens were washed with distilled water and dried. Hue Value/Chroma contrived by Munsell was measured in each specimen. The following results were obtained. 1. Superoxol changes 2.5YR 4.5/2 into N9.5 (white) after 24 hours. 2. All bleaching agents except superoxol change YR into Y.

  • When applying capacitors to distribution line, an effort must be made to determine the economic benefits resulting from the installation of a capacitor. There have been many papers and articles published on the economics of capacitors. Most of these are special cases, or have so many qualifications that they are not much use for other cases unless very careful attention is given to minute details. A general economic analysis on a distribution line is very complicated problem. Consequently, a diagram solution is illustrated for determining the economic condenser and applying resonably well for the distribution line with any load division.

  • For preliminary estimation of ships' machinery weights, many papers giving well-judged data and discussions for rational method of estimation, such as [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], are available, however, they are mostly concerned with large ships propelled by power more than about 2, 000 horsepower. Regarding the medium and small-sized ships, as far as the author is aware, fragmental data and vague discussions found in various technical literature are the all available. In this paper, available data concerned with machinery weights of commercial ships propelled by direct-drive diesel plants of power below 3, 000 horsepower with single screw propeller are collected and analysed to obtain systematic data Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 as weight to power ratio versus power per shaft diagrams together with suplementary data Fig. 1 and Fig. 3. Influences of various factor such as revolutions per minute, mean effective pressure, type and construction of the main units on machinery weights are also investigated in detail to give a better guidance for logical and rational utlization of the proposed diagrams in preliminary estimation of machinery weights.

  • In order to utilize unsorted ONP, which contains leaflets (printed coated papers), as a raw material to produce pulp mold, optimum conditions for repulping were investigated with the pilot Helico pulper at Centre Technique du Paper (CTP), France. Two major process factors were focused: repulping concentration and rotor speed. Repulping at a higher concentration showed more rapid defibering kinetics. Increasing the rotational speed of rotor at the optimum repulping concentration accelerated the defibering kinetics while it also led to higher fines generation and faster decrease in drainage property of the produced pulp. Hence, an alternative way was suggested: starting repulping at a conventional rotor speed and then accelerating the rotor speed for the last minute(s) of repulping.

  • Objectives Some major Chinese medical classics like Huangdineijing (黃帝內經) and Nanjing (難經) assert that a normal person breaths 13,500 times every day. It's just half of real breathing cycles of human. So I tried to find a reasonable explanation to solve this conflict between truth and literal description. Materials and methods To find breath count descriptions in Chinese ancient books, I used Kanseki Repository (http://kanripo.org/). To find precedent research on this topic, I used China National Knowledge Infrastructure (http://cnki.net). Results 33 books refers to human breath cycles for a day, and most of them introduce 13,500 as human breathing frequency of one day. Some recent papers on Laoguanshan (老官山) Western Han dynasty manuscripts show new clues on this topic. Conclusion I assume that 13,500 cycles, the incorrect human breathing frequency of a day, might be originated from adjusting the meaning and usage of the word "Xi (息)".

  • This systematic review evaluates the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture related to improvement in quality of life and problems after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention(PCI). We searched papers in many databases, including National Discovery for Science Leaders(NDSL), Koreanstudies Information Service System(KISS), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS), Research Information Sharing Service(RISS), Public/Publisher MEDLINE(Pubmed), Embase, Cochranelibrary, Chinese Academic Journals(CAJ), Japan Science and Technology Agency(J-STAGE). Initially, 161 studies were found. Of these, 141 studies were excluded following abstract screening. After the remaining 20 papers were scanned, 5 RCTs were selected and analyzed. Among these 5 RCTs, HAMD(Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression) is significantly effective in 1 RCT. In 2 RCTs, LVEF(Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction) is significantly effective. In 2 RCTs, 6MWT(Six-Minute Walk Test) is significantly effective. The review of 5 studies suggests that acupuncture after PCI can be effective in many problems occured after PCI. However, This study couldn't conduct a meta-analysis due to the differences in interventions. Therefore, we hope that systematic reviews with meta-analysis will be published.

  • In order to make digital processing of facial color, standardization methods of photographing and observational requirements and gloss-detecting are done through preceding papers and actual experiences. Examiner's observational informations should be contained with original and temporary color, normalcy and deviation range and gloss. And these are interrelated with time, interior and exterior temperature, emotional state, so should be recorded too. Picturing procedure should be controlled in simple and practical but objective way. Just water cleansing, 15 to 20 minute resting, prohibiton of moisturizing of examinee are common for examiner. Temperature and moisture, width, light source requirement, brightness, polarizing filter of parlor and camera-to-object distance, posture of examinee are should be recorded. In addition, pre and post-revision of color and manifestation of color space after taking images are needed coping with construction of diagnostic database.

  • This research aims at investigation of accuracy potential of RTK(Real-Time Kinematic) GPS in combination with Echo Sounder(E/S) for the coastal mapping. Apart from this purpose, the accuracy of ambiguity resolution with the OTF(On The Fly) method was tested with respect to the initialization time. The result shows that the accuracy is better than 1cm with 5-minute initialization in the distance of 10km baseline. The seaside topography was measured by the RTK GPS only, on the other hand the seafloor topography was surveyed in combination of RTK GPS and E/S. Comparing to the volume of seaside measured by RTK GPS and digital topographical map, the difference of only 2% was achieved. This indicates that the coastal mapping. As a result, it has been revealed that every possible noise in surveying could be corrected and the accuracy could be improved. The accuracy of GPS data acquired in real time was as good as that acquired by post processing. It is expected that it will be useful for the analysis of coastal geographic characteristics because DTM(Digital Terrain Model) can be also constructed for the harbor reclamation, the dredging, and the variation of soil movement in a river.
