블록기반 동영상 부호화기의 객관적 화질평가 (Objective Picture Quality Assessment of Block Based Moving Picture Coder)

  • Conventional MSE or PSNR based methods for objective picture quality assessment of moving picture coder are not well correlated with subjective human evaluation. In recent years, the design of better objective quality assessment has attracted much intention and several picture quality metrics based on the properties of Human Visual System has been proposed. This paper proposes new metric which is appropriate for objective picture quality assessment of block based moving picture coder by considering frequency sensitivity, inter-intra channel masking and several distortion artifacts caused by block based coding. The experimental results show that the proposed method is good correlated with subjective assessment.

  • We propose a novel method to measure moving picture quality of display. This method simulates human visual system based on CSF (Contrast Sensitivity Function). And it evaluates moving picture quality of display on the image captured by pursuit camera. The results from this method are correlated with human visual perception test very well.

  • With the rapid development of communication technology and widespread uses of internet service, utilization of internet-based medical information systems which transmitts moving pictures of medical objects is becoming a common practice. The internet-based medical information service prvovides richer information than conventional services such as touch-tone telephone, personal computers e-mails, or pagers, because "a picture is worth a thousand words". However, the systems passively transmits moving pictures of the medical objects to the users, and thus the system cannot intelligently adjust itself to provide better service. As the tradeoff exists between transmission speed and quality of the image, there is a need that moving pictures be analyzed to adjust the trnasmission speed and image quality. When very little difference between consecutive images are detected, the system can automatically increase the size of the image files, thus enhancing the quality of image. In contrast, the system should increase the number of images to send more pictorial information by sacrificing the quality of each individual image, when a significant difference is detected. In this paper an adaptive filtering technique is introduced which adjusts the quality of image and transmission speed according to a clinical situation in hospital.

  • Recently, CMOS image sensor is rapidly used as an image capture device such as mobile phone or notebook PC. Because of poor quality of image by CMOS image sensor, ISP is essential step to improve image quality. In this paper, we implemented and simulated ISP algorithm for real time moving picture of CMOS image sensor. Especial Iy, we concentrated on color interpolation, which extracts three color component from uncompleted color information. Several algorithms for color interpolation are implemented and analyzed to acquire a good quality of picture. Finally, we proposed an improved algorithm and confirmed the effectiveness by experimental simulation results.

  • Chunghwa Picture Tubes, LTD. (CPT) has developed a Novel TFT-LCD Driving Techniquel. This new technique is developed in combination with other state-of-the-art image processing solutions such as image compression / decompression, motion detection, and noise reduction. By applying the Novel Driving Technique to the high resolution TFT-LCD, it was found that the response time can be effectively reduced with a lower overall system cost by smaller frame memory requirement, lower EMI by less memory band-width. Likewise, higher display quality can also be achieved in that the unexpected noises generated by over-drive can be eliminated. The Novel TFT-LCD Driving Technique has been successfully implemented to the 30 inch WXGA (1280${\times}$768) resolution TFT LCD commercial TV module. It was found that the quality of moving picture was better improved compared with that of the conventional fast response driving method.

  • In general, contrary to the CRTs with impulsive emission, liquid crystal displays have motion artifacts such as blurring. ghost image, decrease of dynamic CR(contrast ratio), and stroboscopic motion due to hold type driving method. In this paper, to improve motion picture quality of LCDs. impulsive driving method of black data insertion was applied to the OCB mode which is well known for its fast LC response time and wide viewing angle properties. Subject evaluation was carried out with CRT, TN, SIPS(Super IPS). and impulsive driving OCB. Moving picture image quality near CRT was obtained in impulsive OCB driving mode

Novel Impulsive Driving Schemes for 120Hz LCD Panels

  • Two new impulsive driving technologies for 120Hz liquid crystal display (LCD) panels are proposed to improve moving picture quality. One technology generates the dark frame using an adder and a shifter simply without using any look up tables (LUTs). It results in a cost effective impulsive scheme with motion picture quality comparable to that of high speed driving. The other is a backlight flashing method designed to avoid ghost images. The issue of ghost images caused by the slow response time of liquid crystal (LC) is solved by means of 120Hz overdriving and 120Hz backlight flashing. Using the perceived blur edge time (PBET) metric, measured moving picture response time (MPRT) values were 10.8ms and 4.4ms, respectively, while that of 120Hz high speed driving was 10.1ms.

액정 디스플레이의 동화상 퍼짐 노이즈 특성 평가 (Characteristics Evaluation of Moving Picture Blur Noise for Liquid Crystal Display)

  • LCD의 동화상 퍼짐(blur) 노이즈를 측정하고 그 특성을 평가하였다. 실험결과, 퍼짐 노이즈는 시선이 동화상을 추적하면서 이동할 경우에 발생하며 시선이 고정되어 있을 경우에는 발생하지 않았다. 그리고 화상 퍼짐에 의한 계조 감소는 선형적이며 속도 의존성이 있었다. 이 실험결과를 근거로 한 퍼짐 노이즈 시뮬레이터를 개발하고 퍼짐 노이즈를 시뮬레이션 한 결과, 화상의 이동속도가 빠를수록 퍼짐 노이즈가 증가하였으며 이것은 측정결과와도 일치하였다. 백라이트 점등비 제어에 의한 퍼짐 노이즈 특성을 시뮬레이션 한 결과, 점등비가 낮을수록 노이즈가 저감되나 백라이트의 점등 타이밍이 2개의 인접한 프레임에 걸쳐서 있으면 오히려 노이즈가 심해졌다. 또한 프레임을 120[Hz]로 배속시켜 구동하는 경우에는 기존의 두 화상 사이에 새로운 화상이 생김으로써 얻는 화상 이동속도의 감소가 퍼짐 노이즈를 저감시켰다.

Recent Development of Optically Compensated Bend (OCB) Mode TFT-LCD

  • Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMD) has firstly succeeded in mass production of OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) mode liquid crystal display panels which have excellent moving picture quality almost the same as CRT. We have newly developed 32 -inch diagonal HD ($1366{\times}768\;pixels$) panels using OCB mode and low temperature p-Si TFT (LTPS) array substrates. High performance of brightness of $600cd/m^2$ and contrast ratio of 600 : 1 was obtained by using pseudo-impulse driving method to insert a black period between continuous two frames, and also by using blinking backlight method. Furthermore, moving picture response time (MPRT) 6.5ms has been obtained by optimization of black insert driving and backlight blinking, without the great sacrifices of contrast ratio and luminance.

  • In applying LCD to TV application, one of the most significant factors to be improved is image sticking on the moving picture. LCD is different from CRT in the sense that it's continuous passive device, whichholds images in entire frame period, while impulsetype device generate image in very short time. We realized articulate image generation similar to CRT by CCFL blinking drive and TN-LCD overdriving. As a result, reduced image sticking phenomenon was validated by naked eye and response time measureme.
