The colors of packaging of herbicides and non-selective herbicides on the market in Korea are defined as brown and red, respectively, according to the notification of RDA. The present study aimed to understand consumer's electroencephalographic (EEG) response when looking at brown and red colors of herbicide and non-selective herbicide packaging papers. The EEG cap was placed on the scalp of each participant (men and women, 10 to 20 years old) and white (control) - brown - white - red colors were sequentially displayed for 5 seconds using the computer monitor. The EEG was measured and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. For the brown color of the herbicide, men showed a decrease in concentration and a distracting response due to a decrease in the ratio of mid beta to theta (RMT) and the spectral edge of frequency (SEF90). In women, an increase in the ratio of SMR to theta (RSMT) and the spectral edge frequency 50% of the alpha (ASEF) was observed in different brain regions and these EEG changes may enhance the relaxation, stabilization and awakening states of the brain. For the red color of the non-selective herbicide, ASEF increased psychological stability in men. In women, a decrease in absolute high beta (AHB) may associate with a decrease in attention state of the brain. Overall data of the present study clearly revealed that the colors of two herbicides showed significantly different EEG response and gender difference.
The potential as natural herbicide of d-limonene natural agent was conducted on several weeds in a greenhouse and Sciyos angulatus in field condition. Herbicidal activity of foliar application at a concentration of 100 and 200 kg ai $ha^{-1}$ of d-limonene on seven weed species was completely killed in a greenhouse condition. Also, d-limonene at a concentration of 50 kg ai $ha^{-1}$ was completely killing on Abutilon theophrasti, Aeschynomene indica, Echinochloa crus-galli and Digitaria ciliaris 3 days after treatment. While pre-emergence treatment of d-limonene concentration of 12.5 to 200 kg ai $ha^{-1}$ showed not significant visible damages. Phytotoxic symptoms of d-limonene by foliar treatment were characterized by wilting and burn-down of leaves and stems followed by discoloration, finally, plant death. Crop selectivity at d-limonene concentration of 100 kg ai $ha^{-1}$ over to five main crops including Zea mays by foliar application was not at all. Field trial of foliar treatment with d-limonene 70 to 140 kg ai $ha^{-1}$ have effectively controled over 5~20 leaf stages of S. angulatus at the natural habitats. And herbicidal efficacy of foliar application on S. angulatus with carrier volume in field condition was increased with dose dependent manners. These results suggest that d-limonene is considered possible as herbicide, and may be further optimized for natural agent for environmental friendly natural herbicide.

Weeds are a serious problem in crop production. Use of synthetic herbicides is rapidly increasing in weed management worldwide including Korea. Herbicide application reduces the time spent on weed control. However, the evolution of resistance to herbicides in weeds has become widespread as a natural response to selection pressure imposed by agricultural management activities. If an herbicide with the same mechanisms of action is used repeatedly and intensively, it can rapidly select for a weed biotype that shifts toward difficult-to-control becoming a more tolerant weed and lead to the evolution of herbicideresistant weeds. Moreover, agricultural and biological factors have an important role in the development of herbicide-resistant weed populations. Mitigating the evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds relies on reducing selection through the diversification of weed control techniques. The resistance management of weeds in the future will strongly depend on intensive cropping systems. The current situation of intensive cropping systems with their heavy reliance on the efficacy of chemical weed control will not lead to significant containment of this problem. Therefore, management strategies need to overcome the further spread of herbicide resistance in weeds in Korean crop production. This review presents the current information on herbicide resistance in Korea and factors controlling the development of herbicide resistant weeds.
Herbicide tolerant rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ilpumbyeo) cell lines were selected from $\gamma$-ray-irradiated anther-derived cell cultures. The anther-derived cell clusters were small (300 to 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter) and uniform ones that were screened by miracloth filtering. The cell suspensions were very efficient to plate one layer onto agar medium and to screen target cell lines. Herbicide tolerant cell lines were selected by 5 mg/L cyhalofop butyl (CHB) treatment by using the small cell suspensions on agar N6 medium containing 1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.2 mg/L kinetin. Of the cell lines, one line (CHB-1) showed stable tolerance at 10 mg/L concentration after 6-month culture without herbicide suspension. Growth stability of CHB-1 was similar to that of control cell line on 10 mg/L CHB containing medium. In this experiment we established herbicide tolerant cell line selection system by using anther-derived uniform-cell suspensions with $\gamma$-ray-irradiation.
Bromoxynil is an antidicot herbicide widely used on cereal crops and has a short half life in the soil. A bxn gene, encoding a specific nitrilase that converts bromoxynil to its primary metabolite 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid, was inserted in plant binary vector pGA482, and then introduced into tobacco and lettuce plants via Agrobacterium mediated leaf-disc transformation method. Transgenic plants with the bxn gene were selected by kanamycin and regenerated to whole plants. The regenerated transgenic plants were determined level of expression of bxn gene by Northern blot analysis. Leaf-disc analysis and pot-assay confirmed that the transgenic tobacco and lettuce plants were resistant to high doses of bromoxynil.
For searching the natural herbicide-components, the seed germination and seedling growth of receptor plant species (Brassica campestris, Sesamum indicum, Perilla frutescens and Echinochloa crus-galli) were investigated in four solvent-extracts extracted from Coptis chinensis Franch. The seed germination of receptor plant species was largely inhibited in 2,000 ppm of ethyl acetate compared to the control, and it was inhibited in order of P. frutescens, B. campestris, E. crux-galli, and S. indicum. In seedling growth, the shoot and root elongations of receptor plant species were inhibited in order of S. indicum, P. frutescens, B. campostris, and E. crus-galli. Root elongation was remarkably reduced in order of $H_2O$, butyl alcohol, and hexane, ethyl acetate extracts. Of four receptor plant species, seed germination and seedling growth of B. campestris and S. indicum showed the species-specific reaction to the solvent-extracts extracted from C. chinemis. $H_2O$ extract had a natural herbicide potential to the seed germination or root elongation in B. campestris and S. indicum. The result can be provided a basic data f3r the development of natural herbicide.

This study was to investigate the occurrence patterns of paddy weeds, their resistance levels to an ALS inhibiting herbicide, and to estimate the areas of resistance in these paddy fields. We used soil collected from 358 paddy fields of Jeonnam province in 2017. Based on their life cycles, weeds were 96% annuals and 4% perennial. Additionally, according to morphological classification, 59% were broad leaves, 28% were sedges and 13% were grasses. Different areas within Jeonnam province contained different numbers and occurrence rates of weed species. However, generally, we observed Lindernia dubia var. dubia, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, Ludwigia prostrata, L. procumbens, Cyperus difformis, Scirpus juncoides, Eleocharis Kuroguwai, Echinochloa oryzoides, and E. crus-galli var. echinata. We also observed seven weeds resistant to an ALS inhibiting herbicide. They were M. vaginalis, S. juncoides, C. difformis, L. dubia, Ludwigia prostrata, E. oryzoides, and E. crus-galli var. echinata. Although there were differences in the number and occurrence rate of resistant weed species to an ALS inhibiting herbicide among areas in Jeonnam province, the M. vaginalis, C. difformis, and S. juncoides occurred in 23 cities and counties in Jeonnam including Gwangju metropolitan city. Based on the rates (52%) of resistant occurrence to an ALS inhibiting herbicide in Jeonnam province, the area of weed resistant paddy fields was estimated to be 91,543 ha.
This study was conducted to investigate the crossability, seed dormancy and overwintering ability of rice plant in GM (glufosinate ammonium-resistant lines. Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their parents) or red rice (Andongaengmi). Seed-setting rate was not significantly different between GM and non-GM rice varieties. Iksan 483 and Milyang 204 showed the similar level of seed germination rate from 30 to 50 days after heading as compared to non-GM rice varieties. After overwintering in paddy field, seed germination rate of GM and non-GM rice varieties ranged from 14.3 % to 57.6 % in dry soil condition, but there was no germination in wet-soil except red rice. The result in wet-soil condition may help to set up a strategy for reducing the risk of gene flow of transgene via dispersal of seeds of GM plants. The crossability, seed dormancy and seed overwintering of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, herbicide resistant GM rice varieties, were not significantly different compared to non-GM rice varieties. The results might be helpful to reduce the risk of transgene dispersal from GM crop via seeds and pollens.

Alternatives to commercial chemical herbicide are currently being searched and tested due to the numerous adverse effects of commercially available herbicides to the environment. Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli) is an important weed species around the world, especially in paddy rice fields. This study focuses on the favorable effects of mixing pyroligneous acids with commercial liquid herbicides. Seedlings were transplanted and grown under greenhouse conditions. The effect of treatment time or leaf-stage on herbicide-pyroligneous acid efficacies was checked, coupled with isolation and quantification of biochemical compounds. Results revealed that herbicide treatment at early post emergence (2~3 leaf stage) of Echnochloa crus-galli leads to effective control. Both liquid herbicides affected fatty acid, protein, and amino acid syntheses as reflected on their contents. The influence of wood vinegar (WV) or rice vinegar (RV) on these compounds was not thoroughly verified due to lack of information on the pyroligneous products. We observed that mixing WV or RV with BCB (bentazone + cyhalof-butyl) gives more favorable results than BUC (butachlor + clomazone), mixed with WV or RV. The result would indicate the potential of mixing pyroligneous acid in reducing herbicide application rate.
