  • This study concerns the derivation of optimum tuning formulas for a passive Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) device, for the case of benchmark ideal excitations acting on a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) damped primary structure. The free TMD parameters are tuned first through a non-linear gradient-based optimisation algorithm, for the case of harmonic or white noise excitations, acting either as force on the SDOF primary structure or as base acceleration. The achieved optimum TMD parameters are successively interpolated according to appropriate analytical fitting proposals, by non-linear least squares, in order to produce simple and effective TMD tuning formulas. In particular, two fitting models are presented. The main proposal is composed of a simple polynomial relationship, refined within the fitting process, and constitutes the optimum choice. A second model refers to proper modifications of literature formulas for the case of an undamped primary structure. The results in terms of final (interpolated) optimum TMD parameters and of device effectiveness in reducing the structural dynamic response are finally displayed and discussed in detail, showing the wide and ready-to-use validity of the proposed optimisation procedure and achieved tuning formulas. Several post-tuning trials have been carried out as well on SDOF and MDOF shear-type frame buildings, by confirming the effective benefit provided by the proposed optimum TMD.

  • This study attempts to develop new simplified approximate formulas to predict the fundamental natural periods of vibration (T) for bearing wall systems engaged with special reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSW) under seismic loads. Commonly, seismic codes suggested empirical formulas established by regression analysis of measured T for buildings during earthquake motions. These formulas depend on structure type, building height, number, height and length of SW, and ratio of SW area to base area of structure. In this study, a parametric investigation is performed for T of 110 selected models of bearing RCSW systems with varying structural height, configuration of horizontal plans including building width, number and width of bays, presence of middle corridors and core SWs. For this purpose, a 3D non-linear response time history (TH) analysis is implemented using ETABS v16.2.1. New formulas to estimate T are anticipated and compared with those obtained from formulas of IBC 2012 and ASCE/SEI 7-10. Moreover, the study examines responses of an arbitrarily two selected test model of 60 m and 80 m in height with presence of SWs having middle corridors. It is observed that the performance of the tested buildings is different through arising of considerable errors when using codes' formulas for estimating T. Accordingly, using the present proposed formulas exhibits more reasonable and safer design compared to codes' formulas. The results showed that equitable enhancement is promising to improve T formulas approaching enhanced and accurate estimation of T with reliable analysis, design, and evaluation of bearing RCSW systems.

  • Objectives : To examine various ways non-glutinous rice has been applied in different formulas of "Shanghanlun" and the relationship between non-glutinous rice and the formulas' effects. Methods : First, texts that included non-glutinous rice were selected from the "Shanghanlun". Then, they were categorized according to the application of non-glutinous rice, followed by analysis of its relationship with each formula. Results : Most formulas that used non-glutinous rice in raw form when decocting with other ingredients included Shigao. Non-glutinous rice alleviates coldness of Shigao as in the case with Taohuatang where it stops diarrhea. Non-glutinous rice used in Wumeiwan warms the center and boosts Qi and helps the medicinal ingredients to bind when made into pellets. In Guizhitang and Lizhongwan, non-glutinous rice assists Stomach Qi. In Shizaotang, porridge is taken after diarrhea to help quick recovery. To prevent damage of Zheng Qi, Baisan can be mixed with rice water for administration. The level of cathartic effect can be managed through giving cold or hot porridge to the patient according to his/her response to the medicine. Mazirenwan, Mulizexiesan, Banxiasan, Sinisan, Wulingsan are mixed in rice water for administration. It makes it easier to swallow than when mixed with plain water. The application of rice flour is either internal or external. In Zhufutang, where rice flour is parched, it harmonizes the center and stops diarrhea. In Daqinglongtang when there is too much perspiration, warm powder is sprinkled on the skin to stop sweating. Clear porridge in Jiuziyisifang and rice flour in Shechuangzisan were exclusive to "Jinguiyaolue", while Baisan and rice water mixture could only be found in "Shanghanlun". Conclusions : The excavation and research on various ways non-glutinous rice was applied in treatment holds certain meaning in contemporary practice of Korean Medicine where treatment leans heavily on medicinal treatment rather than food, and all ingredients are boiled together in large quantities for most decoctions.

  • In this paper, we will provide a comprehensive review of radio propagation measurements conducted to date for mobile radio systems at frequency bands used for cellular and personal communications services in microcellular systems. Path-loss results were measured by using narrowband signal and multipath propagations were characterized by wideband measurements. This paper includes unpublished empirical path loss formulas for Oakland city of non-uniform building heights, and presents a comparison with path loss formulas obtained from typical low-rise building environments in order to discuss street grid dependence on route-specific building profile. We will also compare some empirical models developed based on the measurements with a few well-established theoretical prodiction models.

  • This study aims to provide basic size data for the development of a hip dislocation prevention garment for cerebral palsy (CP) children and useful information for the design of garment products for CP children through identifying differences in body shape between CP and non-CP children and reviewing the tibial-stature prediction formulas of previous studies. Forty-seven Korean children with CP aged 2 to 14 years were measured for body size from October 2019 to August 2020. Body measurements of 18 sites, including greater trochanter length, which is an important site for a hip dislocation prevention garment, were collected and analyzed. Data of non-CP children were taken from same age of Size Korea and compared. Tibial-stature prediction formulas suggested in four previous studies were also reviewed. CP children had significantly lower stature as well as circumferential dimensions when compared to non-CP children. Greater trochanter length is difficult to predict through other body dimensions. Thus, direct measurement is required. Of the general key dimensions used in the clothing industry, only hip circumference could explain the body shape of CP children. Tibial-stature prediction formulas cannot always but tend to largely predict the actual stature of CP children.

  • In this paper, algorithm for non-iterative decoding method is proposed and fractal image decoder based on non-iterative fractal decoding algorithm used general purpose digital signal processors is designed and implemented. The algorithm is showed that the attractor image can be obtained analytically whe n the image is encoded using the fractal algorithm proposed by Monro and Dudbridge, in which the corresponding domain block for a range block is fifed. Using the analytical formulas, we can obtain the attractor image without iteration procedure. And we get general formulas of obtained analytical formulas. Computer simulation results for various test images show that we can increase the image decoding speed by more than five times when we use the analytical formulas compared to the previous iteration methods. The fractal image decoder contains two ADSP2181's and perform image decoding by three stage pipeline structure. The performance tests of the implemented decoder is elapsed 31.2ms/frame decoding speed for QCIF data when all the frames are decoded. The results enable us to process the real-time fractal decoding over 30 frames/sec.

  • Objective : Classification of herbal formulas through the analysis of compositional herb's is a suitable method in the aspects of the effective applications of herbal formulas. However, these classification methods have some problems in dealing with lots of herbal formulas because the estimations of herbal formula's effects are dependent upon one's memory. In this study, we aimed to establish the effective methodology to elicit the classified herbal formula's chart by introducing the DB systems without interfering with non-standard terms. Results : We have known that this plan is realized by follow methods. We entered the herbs informations of the composition of herbal formulas into database, made an alias tables of corresponding herbs, and achieved standardization of herb's informations. Using these databases, we made the classified herbal formula's chart according to the presence and the treatment informations of herbs.

  • In this study, two dimensional wave overtopping tests for vertical wall were performed and overtopping formulas were suggested for impulsive and non-impulsive wave conditions. The test results from this study were compared with those from EurOtop(2007). The wave overtopping formulas were derived and suggested considering the recent research trends, while the existing method used the diagram. The wave overtopping formulas have the form of exponential and power functions using non-dimensional variables for wave overtopping and freeboard heights for non-impulsive and impulsive condition, respectively. The wave overtopping formula and effective parameters for inclined superstructure were also suggested. It is analyzed that the locations of inclined superstructure do not have the significant effects on wave overtopping, that is, the wave overtopping rate were almost same for each locations.
