Comparing the Performance of One-column Process and Four-zone Simulated Moving Bed by Computer Simulation

  • A new one-column chromatography process, analogous to a four-zone simulated moving bed (SMB), was presented. The basic principle of the process was identical to that of a four-zone SMB. The process consisted of one chromatographic column and four tanks, instead of the four columns in the four-zone SMB (1-1-1-1), and has been used for the separation of two amino acids, phenylalanine and tryptophan, using an ion exchange resin. The operating parameters for the one-column process and four-zone SMB were obtained from equilibrium theory. Computer simulations were used to compare the performances of the new one column process to that of the general four-zone SMB, using Aspen $Chromatography^{TM}$ v 11.1. The differences between the one-column and SMB processes in terms of the purities and yields of phenylalanine and tryptophan were less than 4 and about $6\%$, respectively. The lower purities of the one-column process were due to the loss of the developed concentration profiles in the column when the liquid was stored in tanks. The one-column process gave great flexibility, and would be useful for reconstructing an existing conventional chromatography process to one of a SMB.

  • The distillation column is one of large energy consumable units in the cryogenic air separation process and the accurate energy analysis of this unit is necessary for choice of energy saving process. In this work, the energy method was adopted for energy analysis of a cryogenic nitrogen distillation column. In order to designing the energy saving distillation column, the exergy distribution of feed air, exergy efficiency and exergy loss for process condition was investigated and the optimal process condition to minimize the exergy loss was found. The result from this work can be used as a guideline for the choice of the process design conditions and efficiency improvement of cryogenic distillation column.

  • 콘크리트 충전강관에 사용되는 강관의 제작법은 재단된 4장의 플레이트를 모서리에서 용접하는 일반강관 제작법과, ㄷ형으로 절곡성형과정을 거쳐 2-Seam으로 용접하는 제작방법, 그리고 원형강관을 압축하여 4각형태로 만드는 방법등이 일반적으로 사용되며, 강관제작에 사용되는 용접방법과 용접량의 선택은 강관 제작비용에 큰 부분을 차지하고 있다. 새로운 제작형식으로 개발된 각형강관은 4장의 플레이트를 ㄱ형으로 절곡성형한 후 강관 폭의 중앙에서 4-Seam Flare 용접하는 방식이다. 본 연구에서는 새로운 제작형식의 CFT 각형 기둥에 대하여 용접량 평가를 위한 실험방법을 제시하고, 강관 제작법, 강관두께 및 용접량을 변수로 총 6개의 실험체를 제작하여 구조실험 및 해석을 수행하여 강관내부의 수압에 따른 강관의 거동을 평가하였다.

A new replaceable fuse for moment resisting frames: Replaceable bolted reduced beam section connections

  • This paper describes a new type of replaceable fuse for moment resisting frames. Column-tree connections with beam splice connections are frequently preferred in the moment resisting frames since they eliminate field welding and provide good quality. In the column-tree connections, a part of the beam is welded to the column in the shop and the rest of the beam is bolted with the splice connection in the field. In this study, a replaceable reduced beam section (R-RBS) connection is proposed in order to eliminate welding process and facilitate assembly at the site. In the proposed R-RBS connection, one end is connected by a beam splice connection to the beam and the other end is connected by a bolted end-plate connection to the column. More importantly is that the proposed R-RBS connection allows the replacement of the damaged R-RBS easily right after an earthquake. Pursuant to this goal, experimental and numerical studies have been undertaken to investigate the performance of the R-RBS connection. An experimental study on the RBS connection was used to substantiate the numerical model using ABAQUS, a commercially available finite element software. Additionally, five different finite element models were developed to conduct a parametric study. The results of the analysis were compared in terms of the moment and energy absorption capacities, PEEQ, rupture and tri-axiality indexes. The design process as well as the optimum dimensions of the R-RBS connections are presented. It was also demonstrated that the proposed R-RBS connection satisfies AISC criteria based on the nonlinear finite element analysis results.

  • When fabricating a vision chip, we should consider the noise problem, such as the fixed pattern noise(FPN) due to the process variation. In this paper, we propose an edge-detection circuit based on biological retina using the offset-free column readout circuit to reduce the FPN occurring in the photo-detector. The offset-free column readout circuit consists of one source follower, one capacitor and five transmission gates. As a result, it is simpler and smaller than a general correlated double sampling(CDS) circuit. A vision chip for edge detection has been designed and fabricated using $0.35\;{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal CMOS technology, and its output characteristics have been investigated.

Towards improved models of shear strength degradation in reinforced concrete members

  • Existing models for the shear strength degradation of reinforced concrete members present varied conceptual approaches to interpreting test data. The relative superiority of one approach over the others is difficult to determine, particularly given the sparseness of ideal test data. Nevertheless, existing models are compared using a suite of test data that were used for the development of one such model, and significant differences emerge. Rather than relying purely on column test data, the body of knowledge concerning degradation of concrete as a material is considered. Confined concrete relations are examined to infer details of the degradation process, and to establish a framework for developing phenomenologically-based models for shear strength degradation in reinforced concrete members. The possibility of linking column shear strength degradation with material degradation phenomena is explored with a simple model. The model is applied to the results of 7 column tests, and it is found that such a link is sustainable. It is expected that models founded on material degradation phenomena will be more reliable and more broadly applicable than the current generation of empirical shear strength degradation models.

무선 네트웤 라우터응용을 위한 고성능32비트 내장AES (High Performance 32-bit Embedded AES for Wireless Network Router Applications)

  • 본 논문은 고성능32비트 AES구조를 제시한다. 재배열 구조는 5단 파이프라인을 사용한다. 그 안에 ShiftRows/InvShiftRows 모듈은 4단 파이프라인을 사용하고 MixColumn/InvMixColumn 모듈은 1단 파이프라인을 사용한다. Shift rows와 inverse shift rows 같은 구조를 사용한다. Mix column 과 inverse mix column 도 같은 구조를 사용한다. 그리고 RCON구조를 단순화 하여 사이즈를 줄였다. 제안된 구조는 verilogHDL 을 이용하여 구현 하였다. 이 회로의 처리량은 415Mbits/s 이고 크기는 0.18um CMOS 공정에서 13,764 게이트 이다. 재배열 구조는 무선 네트워크 라우터에서 사용할 수 있다.

Effect of cooling rate on the post-fire behavior of CFST column

  • The post-fire behavior of structural elements and the cooling process has always been one of the main concerns of the structural engineers. The structures can be cooled at different rates, where they affect the structure's behavior. In the present study, a numerical model has been developed using the Abaqus program to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the post-fire behavior of the CFST column. To verify the model, results of an experimental study performed on CFST columns within a full heating and cooling cycle have been used. In this model, coMParison of the residual strength has been employed in order to examine the behavior of CFST column under different cooling rates. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out on the strength of steel and concrete, the height of the specimens, the axial load ratio and the cross-sectional shape of the specimen through the proposed model. It was observed that the cooling rate affects the behavior of the column after the fire, and thus the higher the specimen's temperature is, the more effect it has on the behavior. It was also noticed that water cooling had slightly more residual strength than natural cooling. Furthermore, it was recognized from the parametric study, that by increasing the strength of steel and concrete and the load ratio, as well as modifying the cross-sectional shape from circular to square, residual strength of column at the cooling phase was less than that of the heating phase. In addition, with reducing column height, no change was witnessed in the column behavior after the cooling phase.

A Numerical Study on Heat Transfer Characteristics in a Spray Column Direct Contact Heat Exchanger

  • A reliable computational heat transfer model has been investigated to define the heat transfer characteristics of a spray column direct contact heat exchanger, which is often utilized in the process involving counterflows for heat and mass transfer operations. Most of the previous studies investigated are one-dimensional unsteady solutions based on rather fragmentary experimental data. Development of a multidimensional numerical model and a computational algorithm are essential to analyze the inherent multidimensional characteristics of a direct contact heat exchanger. The present study has been carried out numerically and establishes a solid simulation algorithm for the operation of a direct contact heat exchanger. Operational and system parameters such as the speed and direction of working fluid droplets at the injection point, and the effects of aspect ratio and void fraction of continuous fluid are examined thoroughly as well to assess their influence on the performance of a spray column.

  • In this study, a computer simulation work has been performed for the separation of electronic grade highly pure carbon dioxide more than 7 N purity through a cryogenic distillation process. For the cold utility as a cooling medium for a condenser of the cryogenic distillation column, propylene was utilized as a refrigerant in the vapor-recompression refrigeration cycle. Through this work, it was concluded that the cryogenic distillation column with two stage compression and refrigeration cycle were essential to obtain a highly-pure liquefied CO2.
