  • Plasmonic high-order harmonic generation (HHG) is used in nanoscale optical applications because it can help in realizing a compact coherent ultrashort pulse generator on the nanoscale, using plasmonic field enhancement. The plasmonic amplification of nanostructures induces nonlinear optical phenomena such as second-order harmonic generation, third-order harmonic generation, frequency mixing, and HHG. This amplification also causes damage to the structure itself. In this study, the plasmonic amplification according to the design of a metal-coated sapphire conical structure is theoretically calculated, and we analyze the effects of this optical amplification on HHG and damage to the sample.

  • A regenerative Er-doped fiber amplifier system for a high-repetition-rate optical pulse train is investigated for the first time. A signal pulse train with a wavelength tuning range of 18 nm is produced by a passive mode-locked fiber laser based on a nonlinear polarization rotation technique. In order to realize the amplification, an optical delay-line is used to achieve time match between the pulses' interval and the period of pulse running through the regenerative amplifier. The 16 dB gain is obtained for an input pulse train with a launching power of -30.4 dBm, a center wavelength of 1563.4 nm and a repetition rate of 15.3 MHz. The output properties of signal pulses with different center wavelengths are also discussed. The pulse amplification is found to be different from the regenerative amplification system for CW signals.

  • We investigate an optical technique for beam shaping and optical amplification of a pulsed laser diode without variation of its original properties, such as repetition rate and pulse duration. The horizontal and longitudinal sizes of the pulsed laser diode are 300 and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, and its output power is $1.1mW/cm^2$. The multimodal and elliptical pulse shape of the laser diode is converted to the single-modal and Gaussian pulse shape by using a lensed optical fiber. Since the single-modal lensed fiber coupling from the multimodal pulsed laser diode degrades the output power severely, the output power of the pulsed laser diode is dramatically enhanced by using an optical amplification method based on master oscillated power amplification (MOPA). The pulse qualities of the laser diode are not changed after amplifying the pulse power and the output power was finally measured to be $29mW/cm^2$.

  • Recently, analysis of transient Raman backscattering in a plasma reported(2.3) that it is possible to reach 10$\^$17/ W/cm$^2$ for 1 micrometer wavelength laser pulse with a counter-propagating pump pulse. The basic mechanism is like this : whorl the two counter-propagating waves in a plasma satisfy the condition of Raman backscattering, w$\_$0/ : w$\_$1/ + w$\_$p/, energy is transferred from the long pulse to the short pulse via three wave interaction(4). • A chirped-pulse amplification Ti:sapphire laser system has been designed using a 10-Hz 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser to generate 0.1-Hz 0.5-PW laser pulses and optimize their temporal qualities such as temporal contrast and pulse duration. A high-energy booster amplifier to be added is expected to produce an energy above 30 J through the parasitic lasing suppression and the efficient amplification. To improve the temporal contrast of the laser pulses, a high-contrast 1-kHz amplifier system is used as a front-end. A grating stretcher which makes the laser pulse have 1-ns duration is used to prevent optical damages due to high pulse energy during amplification. A grating compressor has been designed with group delay analysis to obtain the recompressed pulse duration close to the transform-limited pulse duration. The final laser pulses are expected to have energy above 20 J and duration below 40 fs.

  • We have characterized the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification of femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses by using a BBO crystal. It is numerically verified that a high gain and a broad gain bandwidth can be obtained with a 532-nm pump laser. The dependence of the gain profile of OPA on phase matching angles, pump intensity, and crystal length is numerically investigated. Experimental results shows that the temporal fluctuation of a pump laser causes the modulation of an amplified spectrum in OPCPA.

  • We have analyzed theoretically optical pulse propagation in a coherent atomic medium for amplification without inversion (AWI), which is achieved by adding incoherent optical pumping to a typical EIT system. In order to explain experimental results [Kim et al., J. Phys. B, 36, 2671(2003)] to control the group velocity of the optical pulse by changing pumping power, we established a 5-level atomic system and applied density matrix equations. This AWI model system is different from previous AWI systems from the viewpoint of using two levels for incoherent optical pumping isolated optically from the EIT (electromagentically induced transparency) system so that more atoms can participate in pulse speed control. We have found that population transfer by collisions between ground states plays a decisive role for efficient AWI, and more atoms are effective for slowing the pulse. Our numerical results are in good agreement qualitatively with experimental results.

  • A Kerr cell was utilized as an optical shutter to generate a shortened pulse and as an isolator between amplifiers in an iodine laser system. By rotating the polarization of incident laser pulse only during the timing window of high voltage applied to the Kerr cell, shortened pulses of 5 ns and 1 ns, corresponding to the difference in propagation time of two coaxial cables, were obtained. It was also noticed that more than one timing window of Kerr cell was produced with a long incident laser pulse from the oscillator. The measured transmittance of Kerr cell with respect to applied voltage was compared with the theoretical estimation using the electro-optic Kerr effect theory. Through the amplification of the shortened pulse in iodine amplifiers. a pulse of 0.5 GW(2 J in 4 ns) was obtained. ained.
