The Development of Design Structure for Environmental Friendly Non-Staple Boxes and Cases Made by the Carton and Corrugated Paperboard (카톤지와 골판지를 이용한 친환경 논스테이플 박스와 케이스 디자인 구조개발)

  • Carton and corrugated paperboard have excellent convertibility characteristics that could be easily slitted, folded, and inserted to become a certain shape of box or case. This excellent processing characteristics of carton and corrugated paperboard as well as their recyclability will continue to make them possess high portion in packaging markets. However, staple, tape, or adhesive have been used to seal a paperboard packaging box or case. Staples among them have been frequently used in many cases because of their convenience. Staples could enter the inside the box and give wounds to the goods in the box or case. Furthermore additional handling and waste treatment costs in the making and recycling processes would be necessary when staple is used to seal box or case. This study has been carried out to develop non-staple paperboard packaging box & case designs that can be used to make non-staple boxes & cases. It is believed that the non-staple folding paperboard boxes & cases could be more environmental-friendly, beautiful, and economic than staple boxes & cases.

Development of Corrugated Paperboard Box for Agricultural and Fishery Products (농수산물 유통용 포장상자 개선)

  • Double wall corrugated paperboard box are almost used for package of agricultural and fishery products in Korea. Flaps of the double wall corrugated paperboard box are consist of the three linerboard and two corrugating medium. But these flaps which are not affected to the compression strength for storage and distribution results in the reasonable cost-up of the packed box. Compared the strengths and economical evaluations between double wall and single wall corrugated paperboard box results as follows. Compression strength of single wall box is higher 49.3% to 98.0% than that of the double wall corrugated paperboard box and its cost are down 5% to 8%. Effect of the cost down on the saving materials of flap and corrugating medium is 13.9%.

Freshness Extension of Tomatoes by Packaging Methods (포장 방법에 따른 토마토의 품질변화)

  • This study was measured weight loss, total ascorbic acids, titratable acidity and soluble solids contents to investigate the effect of EPS(expended polystrene foam) box, double wall corrugated paperboard box and LDPE film pouches during storage at 25oC. The rate of weight loss was 5.9% in corrugated paperboard box after 7 days, but those of 20LD, 40LD film and EPS box were 1.1, 1.0, and 1.1% , respectively. Total ascorbic acid content of EPS box was 20% higher than that in corrugated paperboard box, but the obvious differents were not observed among the LDPE film pouches and EPS box. The titratable acidity was decrease during storage, but total soluble solids content was increase. Overall appearences of LDPE pouches and EPS box were better than those of corrugated paperboard box.

Freshness Preserving of 'Shingo' Pear using Corrugated Paperboard Box Laminated with Functional MA Film (기능성 골판지 상자로 포장한 '신고' 배의 신선도 유지효과)

  • Weight loss of fear packed with corrugated paperboard box(FC) laminated with functional MA film after 60 days storage at 5$^{\circ}C$ was 1.0%, and that of LDPE, CE film was 0.6-0.7%, while that of control(Corrugated Paperboard box) was 2.8%. Total ascorbic acid content of pear ill MA films and FC package was higher than that of control. Titratable acid of control changed 37%, but that of the others packages changed below 27%. Soluble solid content of control changed 27%, while the others changed below 2%. Reference in overall appearence of pear were not found among packaging methods. Corrugated paperboard box(FC) laminated with Functional MA film can be used as packaging material for pear packaging.

  • Weight loss of table Grape packed with control(Corrugated paperboard box), LDPE, CE(MA film masterbatched by ceramic powder treated cemical reagent) and FC box(laminated by CE film pouch) at 25 C after 10 days were 5.6%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.7%, respectively. Weight loss of control was 7.29times higher than that of FC box. Total ascorbic acid content(TAA) of table grape after 10 days was 3.42 mg% for control, was 5.33 for LDPE and 5.14mg% for CE, 4.98mg% for FC. TAA of LDPE and CE showed to higher than that of control, especially TAA of FC was 33% higher than that of control. Titratable acid of LDPE and CE was high compare to control, and acidity of FC was 6% higher than that of control. References in overall appearance of LDPE, CE and FC were better than that of control. Corrugated paperboard box(FC) laminated with functional MA film showed to be able to used as packaging box of table grape.

  • To develope corrugated paperboard box for cold chain system, it was investigated to compression strength and size of air hole. The size of air holes of the side tested box were designed as six groups, 4, 7, 10% and two kind of air hole, 2, 3 hole per the side. Compression strength of box(440${\times}$330${\times}$170 mm(length${\times}$width${\times}$height))was tested by compression tester UM-20Y, DaeSin Co., Korea, speed is 12.5 mm/min), it was stored 4 week at room temperature, RH 70${\times}$5%. Compression strength was high the mort narrow, the longer of air hole. Compression strength of box of the side, 4% was 10% higher among 4, 7, 10%, but differentiate of compression strength owing to the number of air hole was below 10%. for improving the compression strength of box, paper board box for cold chain system was made of the narrow of width and of the long length of air hole.

  • Corrugated paperboard box is used to package of agricultural, fishery and industrial products in Korea. Test of compression strength results as follows. Compressing strength according to the insertion of inner pad was improved in 9.0% to 48.5%, Slitting length and width in 3.0% to 16.0% Compression strength according to the position of transportation hole was different 1.6% to 10.1%, the jointing method 7% to 10.3%, the printing width was decreased in 18.4% to 19.1%.

Freshness Extension of Corrugated Fiberboard Box coated with Functional Materials (기능성 소재가 코팅된 골판지상자의 감귤의 신선도 유지 효과)

  • This study was measured weight loss, total ascorbic acid, titratable acidity, soluble solids content and overall appearances to investigate the effect of corrugated fiberboard box coated with functional materials ; R, G, X box, R, G and X box and Con(double wall corrugated fiberboard) box during storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Weight loss of mandarin of control, corrugated paperboard box coated with functional materials(Y-, R-, G-box) after 8 days were 2.56% to 3.67%. There was not different to weight loss among the four kind of packages. Titratable acidity and soluble solids content of packages was not significant. Total ascorbic acid content(TAA) of mandarin packed with R-box and Y-box was 10% higher than that of control after 8 days. Decay ratio of R-box, Y-box, G-box and control was 4%, 10%, 10% and 8%, respectively. Overall appearance of R-box was the best.

  • This study was measured weight loss, total ascorbic acid, titratable acidity, and soluble solids content and overall appearances to investigate the effect of FC(corrugated fiberboard box laminated with functional MA film)box, LDPE film, CE(functional MA film)pouches and double wall corrugated fiberboard box during storage at $20^{\circ}C$. Weight loss of tomato packed with control, LDPE, CE and FC box at $25^{\circ}C$ after 7 days were 5.3%, 1.5%, 1.3%, and 1.5%, respectively. Weight loss of control was 3.8% higher than that of FC box. Total ascorbic acid content(TAA) of tomato after 7. days, control was 6.89 mg%, LDPE was 8.62 and CE was 8.53mg%, FC was 8.42mg%. TAA of LDPE, CE and FC was higher than that of control. Titratable acidity of tomato packed with LDPE, FC and CE was higher than that of control. Overall appearances of tomato packed with LDPE, CE and FC was better than that of control. Functional MA film laminated in corrugated paperboard box(FC) showed to be able to used as a packaging box of tomato.
