  • Parallel manipulator is suitable for the high precise task because it than has higher stiffness, larger load capacity and more excellent precision, due to the closed-lop structure, than serial manipulator. But the controller design for parallel manipulator is difficult because the parallel manipulator has both the complexity of structure and the interference of actuators. The precision improvement of parallel manipulator using a classical linear control scheme is difficult because the parallel manipulator has the tough nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, firstly, the kinematic analysis of a parallel manipulator used at the experiments is performed so as to show the controllability. The analysis of internal singular configuration of the workspace is performed using the kinematic isotropic index so a sto show the limitation of control performance of a simple linear controller with fixed control gains. Secondly, a control scheme is designed by using an adaptive fuzzy logic controller so that active joints of the parallel manipulator track more precisely the desired input trajectory. This adaptive fuzzy logic controller so that active joints of the parallel manipulator track more precisely the desired input trajectory. This adaptive fuzzy logic controller is often used for the control of nonlinear system because it has both the inference ability and the learning ability. Lastly, the effeciency of designed control scheme is demonstrated by the real-time control experiments with IBM PC interface logic H/W and S/W of my won making. The experimental results was a success.

  • Redundant parallel manipulators have some advantages over the nonredundant parallel manipulators. It is important to determine how many additional branches should be introduced. This paper studies whether one or two additional branches should be added to a 3-DOF parallel manipulator by comparing the flexible deformation of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator with one additional branch and that with two additional branches. The kinematic and dynamic models of the redundant parallel manipulator are derived and the flexible deformation is investigated. The flexible deformation of the manipulators with one additional branch and two branches is simulated and compared. This paper is helpful for designers to design a redundantly actuated parallel manipulator.

  • This paper presents the kinematic and dynamic analysis of parallel manipulators with redundant limbs, obtained by putting additional limbs to an existing parallel manipulator. We develop the kinematic and dynamic models of a parallel, manipulator with redundant limbs. The redundancy in parallelism due to the increased number of limbs and the redundancy in actuation due to the increased number of active joints are considered in the modeling. Based on the derived models, we define the kinematic and dynamic manipulabilities of a parallel manipulator with redundant limbs. The effect of the redundant limbs on the performance of parallel manipulators is analyzed in terms of kinematic and dynamic manipulabilities.

  • This paper presents the kinematic and dynamic analysis of parallel manipulators with actuation redundancy, obtained by replacing the passive joints of an existing parallel manipulator with the active ones. We develop the kinematic and dynamic models of a parallel manipulator with actuation redundancy. The multiplicity in selecting the controllable active joints among the increased number of active joints is considered in the modeling. Based on the derived models, we define the kinematic and dynamic manipulabilities of a parallel manipulator with actuation redundancy. • In this paper, the dynamic controller design problem of a redundant planar 2-dof parallel manipulator is studied. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation, we formulate the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator in the joint space and propose an augmented PD controller with forward dynamic compensation for the parallel manipulator. By formulating the controller in the joint space, we eliminate the complex computation of the Jacobian matrix of joint angles with end-effector coordinate. So with less computation, our controller is easier to implement, and a shorter sampling period can be achieved, which makes the controller more suitable for high-speed motion control. Furthermore, with the combination of static friction model and viscous friction model, the active joint friction of the parallel manipulator is studied and compensated in the controller. Based on the dynamic parameters of the parallel manipulator evaluated by direct measurement and identification, motion control experiments are implemented. With the experiments, the validity of the dynamic model is proved and the performance of the controller is evaluated. Experiment results show that, with forward dynamic compensation, the augmented PD controller can improve the tracking performance of the parallel manipulator over the simple PD controller.

  • This paper presents the modulation of the dexterity of a parallel manipulator using joint freezing/releasing and joint unactuation/actuation. In this paper, individual limbs have redundant number of joints, and each joint can be frozen/released and unactuated/actuated, as needed. First, given a task, the restrictions on joint freezing and joint unactuation of a parallel manipulator are derived. Next, with/without joint freezing and/or joint unactuation, the kinematics of a parallel manipulator is formulated, based on which the manipulability ellipsoid is defined. The effects of joint freezing and joint unactuation on the manipulability are analyzed and compared. Finally, simulation results for a planar parallel manipulator are given. Joint mechanisms, such as joint freezing and joint unactuation, are rather simple to adopt into a parallel manipulator, but is quite effective to improve the task adaptability of the system.

  • An error analysis is very important for a precision machine to estimate its performances. This study proposes a new parallel device. cubic parallel manipulator. There are so many error sources in this mechanism. Errors of the proposed cubic parallel vary with the stiffness of the manipulator. The stiffness of each leg depends on the direction of the actuation force and its direction. In this paper, the stiffness of the manipulator is calculated and the position errors and the orientation errors are predicted with the platform moving. The analysis shows that the method can be used in predicting the accuracy of other parallel devices and in designing a parallel manipulator.

  • Parallel manipulators have been used for a variety of applications, including the motion simulators and mechanism for precise machining. Since the ball screws used for linear motion of legs of the Stewart-Gough type parallel manipulator provide wider contact areas than revolute joints, parallel manipulators are usually more affected by frictional forces than serial manipulators. In this research, the method for detecting the frictional forces arising in the parallel manipulator using the gravitational force is proposed. First, the reference trajectories are computed from the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator assuming that it is subject to only the gravitational force without friction. When the parallel manipulator is controlled so that the platform follows the computed reference trajectory, this control force for each leg is equal to the friction force arising in each leg. It is shown that control performance can be improved when the friction compensation based on this information is added to the controller for position control of the moving plate of a parallel manipulator.

  • This paper presents a methodology for the stiffness analysis of a low-DOF parallel manipulator. A low-DOF parallel manipulator is a spatial parallel manipulator which has less than six degrees of freedom. The reciprocal screws of actuations and constraints in each leg can be determined by making use of the theory of reciprocal screws, which provide information about reaction forces due to actuations and constraints. When pure force is applied to a leg, the leg stiffness is modeled as a linear spring along the line. For pure couple, it is modeled as a rotational spring about the axis. It is shown that the stiffness model of an F-DOF parallel manipulator consists of F springs related to actuations and 6-F springs related to constraints connected from the moving platform to the base in parallel. The $6{\times}6$ Cartesian stiffness matrix is obtained, which is the sum of the Cartesian stiffness matrices of actuations and constraints. Finally, a 3-UPU parallel manipulator is used as an example to demonstrate the methodology.
