  • Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.

  • Our aim is to introduce the notion of a parametric $N_b-metric$ and study some basic properties of parametric $N_b-metric$ spaces. We give some fixed-point results on a complete parametric $N_b-metric$ space. Some illustrative examples are given to show that our results are valid as the generalizations of some known fixed-point results. As an application of this new theory, we prove a fixed-circle theorem on a parametric $N_b-metric$ space.

  • This paper deals with the geometric fitting algorithms for parametric curves and surfaces in 2-D/3-D space, which estimate the curve/surface parameters by minimizing the square sum of the shortest distances between the curve/surface and the given points. We identify three algorithmic approaches for solving the nonlinear problem of geometric fitting. As their general implementation we describe a new algorithm for geometric fitting of parametric curves and surfaces. The curve/surface parameters are estimated in terms of form, position, and rotation parameters. We test and evaluate the performances of the algorithms with fitting examples.

  • An existence theorem for a new class of parametric generalized mixed implicit quasi-variational inclusion problems is established in Hilbert spaces. Further, we study the behavior and sensitivity analysis of the solution set in this class of parametric variational inclusion problems.

  • The present study deals with the parametric resonance behaviour of laminated composite curved shell panels in a hygrothermal environment using Bolotin's approach. A simple laminated model is developed using first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) for the vibration and dynamic stability analysis of laminated composite shells subjected to hygrothermal conditions. A computer program based on the finite element method (FEM) in a MATLAB environment is developed to perform all necessary computations. Quantitative results are presented to show the effects of curvature, ply-orientations, degree of orthotropy and geometry of laminates on the parametric instability of composite curved shell panels for different temperature and moisture concentrations. The excitation frequencies of laminated composite panels decrease with the increase of temperature and moisture due to reduction of stiffness for all laminates.

  • A method of estimating the pose of a three-dimensional object from a set of two-dimensioal images based on parametric eigenspace method is proposed. A Gaussian blurred edge image is used as an input image instead of the original image itself as has been used previously. The set of input images is compressed using K-L transformation. By comparing the estimation errors for the original, blurred original, edge, and blurred edge images, we show that blurring with the Gaussian function and the use of edge images enhance the data compression ratio and decrease the resulting from smoothing the trajectory in the parametric eigenspace, thereby allowing better pose estimation to be achieved than that obtainable using the original images as it is. The proposed method is shown to have improved efficiency, especially in cases with occlusion, position shift, and illumination variation. The results of the pose angle estimation show that the blurred edge image has the mean absolute errors of the pose angle in the measure of 4.09 degrees less for occlusion and 3.827 degrees less for position shift than that of the original image.

  • In this paper, a new technique of space deformation for parametric surfaces with so-called extension function (EF) is presented. Firstly, a special extension function is introduced. Then an operator matrix is constructed on the basis of EF. Finally the deformation of a surface is achieved through multiplying the equation of the surface by an operator matrix or adding the multiplication of some vector and the operator matrix to the equation. Interactively modifying control parameters, ideal deformation effect can be got. The implementation shows that the method is simple, intuitive and easy to control. It can be used in such fields as geometric modeling and computer animation.

  • A parametric loudspeaker is a device to generate highly directional sound using ultrasounds. The parametric loudspeaker could be used to focus sound in a limited space, so it is important to study the characteristics of the parametric loudspeaker in near-field. Mechanism of the audible sound generation in the parametric loudspeaker is explained by nonlinear interaction of the ultrasounds and is modeled as KZK equation, the nonlinear wave equation which contains attenuation, nonlinearity and diffraction. To measure the directional characteristics of the parametric loudspeaker precisely, a method to reduce the spurious signal which taints the measured signal was invented. With the method, directivity patterns of the parametric loudspeaker were measured and compared to the approximated solution and piston sources.

  • This paper presents the unique formation process of a volumetric space with the digital algorithm developed for Voronoi diagram in order to generate an effective parametric architectural form. By applying systematic parameters of architectural conditions within digital parametric tools, the interactions among sub-spaces developed by Voronoi diagram are enhanced by manipulating the spatial structures. In this paper, we discuss how the parametric distributing and zoning geometrical system can support designers in developing a free-formed space, and research on how this system creates a 3D volumetric space. With the in-depth research on the system and structure of Voronoi diagram, the approaches to the application of Voronoi diagram into architectural form generation are clarified to be an effective, creative and successful digital tool. The result of the application of the Voronoi diagram improves the design quality with systematic language in the sense that the sub-regions are created and controlled under the systematic and balanced hierarchy having dynamic relationships among each others with the restoration of the equilibrium of forces and tensions. This 3-dimensional Voronoi diagram provides another means for designers to solve architectural issues and to reinforce their design concepts.
